The Swan Song o the Blue and Grey. 1976 saw the last of the Marx Civil War sets, with a seriously scaled down Civil War battle set. The set was part of the Storage Box Collection and contained 50 pieces. A small smattering of soldiers and accessories. A far cry from the big battle sets of the past. In this set you got a mold shot of Rebs and a Mold Shot of Yankees, All 1rst Series soldiers, 1 cannon, 1 mortar, 2 mounted officers, 2 flags with poles and either the A accessories or the B accessories, plus the poly vinyl Matt. All in all even this small set is pretty cool.

I had this back in the early 60's. I got two sets one Christmas. One from my parents and one from my aunt. This was probably my favorite toy, I played with it constantly.

Bob, Thanks for the memories. I had the box set (series one figures.) Got it for Christmas in the early 60's. This brings me right back 60 years ago!! The poses all look so familiar, like old friends. I spent many hours recreating my idea of Gettysburg on the floor! My set also contained those plastic black cannons that had a spring loaded plastic projectile. It was the same cannon they used for their other sets that I had, e.g. the American Revolution and Zorro sets. They used the same cannon in those sets. Great collection you have now!! Thanks again for bringing back my youth!

Love it Bob. These are excellent. We never had these in the UK. It was all airfix, Timpo and Britain's as well as older types like cholera for us. Keep the good stuff coming. 👍

Great Civil War soldiers! I enjoyed playing with these as a kid in the ‘80s. They were handed down to me from a Marx Centennial set my father owned as a boy. Definitely do more videos featuring the Civil War.

It depends on what you want to do with them? If they are a collection then wait and see what pops up. If it's for wargaming then make do. I wanted the full Walthers steel mill structures and I had to look everywhere around the world because they weren't making them anymore 😔. After a few months I managed to procure the set but it took time and lots of searching. So if it's for a collection then search 🤔, it's fun and frustrating at the same time ⏲️. It's a nice haul all the same. 🧐

I wish we'd had the Marx figures over here in the UK when I was young. We did have the nice Timpo figures though and I'm trying to build up a collection of what I remember having in the 60s and 70s. By the way have you seen the news that Airfix have re-released their 1/32 range of WW2 soldiers? They go for about £9.99 a box over here.

Hi Bob i collect Americana ACW back in the mid 2000's they were pretty cheap but now over here in the uk they are getting expensive ? They usually come in a Gettysburg battle set bag

When I was a kid I never got the Marx ACW set, but I did get a lot of the MPC Civil War guys which I think were less expensive. Of course, today you can easily assemble your own "Battle Of The Blue And Gray" by buying any of the many Marx re-issue figures available, not to mention the many other brands like Armies In Plastic which are available. The one thing I DON'T see, anywhere, are Civil War NAVAL figures. Seems to be a missing dimension in toy soldier production. The closest thing to it are the Union and Confederate Marines put out by Armies In Plastic. And this is surprising, since there was quite a bit of naval action during the Civil War, particularly inland on rivers like the Mississippi. Perhaps the reason is that businessmen are afraid sailors won't sell?

That's an interesting thought! I wonder if the vessels would just be too big at this scale. Besides the price, you would need the space to store them. Back in the day, The Fighting Lady WW2 toy ship was big but used toy soldiers less than half the size of these Marx guys.
@kellysnipe9586
@kellysnipe9586 Месяц назад
@@miked6335 Some of the vessels used in the ACW (American Civil War) were fairly simple in design, such as the mortar barges. These were just basically giant rafts with some armor plating on the deck to protect the crew. You could easily make a toy DIY version with a plank of wood and maybe some foam or posterboard for the armor walls. As for ACW sailors, Armies In Plastic has some great Royal Navy figures from the late 1800s that can be used AS ACW sailors, because the uniforms and equipment are very similar. In fact, the Union and the Confederacy both bought a lot of their equipment and guns from England. And since these AIP sailors come in 3 different colors---kahki, blue, and white----I think they would look pretty good on a toy mortar barge!

@@kellysnipe9586 Building a toy mortar barge to go with the AIP guys sounds like a fun project. I bought a mixed bag from AIP not too long ago but I don't remember any Royal Navy guys. When I posted my comment I was thinking of the big frigates like the Alabama and the ironclads with no visible sailors.

@@miked6335 Most people are completely unaware of all the INLAND naval battles that took place on rivers like the Mississippi. For instance the Confederates at one point put together a River Defense Force. This consisted of lots of private vessels of one kind or another, converted over into warships by adding guns, armor, etc. And there were many incidents of sailors fighting on land, going ashore to attack coastal forts and so on. FUN FACT; The Confederate Navy never got their proper color uniforms (gray) until THREE years into the war. Until then they had to wear the same blue sailor outfits just like the Union!

@@kellysnipe9586 Thanks for the interesting info. I don't think any of that made it onto the Civil War trading cards that came out in the 60's.

Very good. I saw this because I love all the old Marx stuff. I grew up in the 70s with hand me down soldiers and had Lido, Timmee and MPC but never had these.... I recently bought a cheap Civil War playset that was....kind of terrible but then not terrible compared to the prices these things go for now. Nice set though. I have some soldiers i got at a Union Misson for a dollar. About 50 and i really think they are a recent Marx knock off. I would love to find more and have no idea what they are BUT the North is a very dark blue almost black. A lot of the Marx poses though. Thank you.

CTS "Classic Toy Soldiers" actually have there own Civil War sets not the ones you have here, They did also remake the old Marx figures using the original Marx molds!

@@robertgagne2388 yeah i think its great they actually went out and found these old molds cleaned them up and got them working again, and not just take the easy way and do clones! I think they did some Airfix also?....in soft plastic years before Airfix reissued sets in hard plastic, which would break easy!
