To those of you who claim no one's ever heard of this, you're apparently not from Detroit or not old enough to remember! This was indeed a big hit in our hometown.
@@nancysaucier1112 First .45 I ever bought was a -doo-wop song (I never learned the term til years later) "Motorcycle" by Tico and the Triumphs. Still have it to this day. MANY years later I was listening to an interview with Paul Simon and he casually mentioned that this was first record with his first group! STUNNED, I ran to put the song on and sure enough, it WAS clearly Paul singing!!!
I only heard this once on WCSX 20 su’m years ago. Been looking for it since. Can’t believe it took this long to find it. I left MI in ‘02 but yeah…when I heard this was Seger my mouth dropped! Glad I could find it.
I was on this very show! My friend and I were there for the Battle of the Bands segment, were the judges and we voted for Seger. He was so happy. I tell my now grown children that we helped make Seger's career. They just laugh.
R.I.P. Robin Seymour, the host of “Swingin’ Time” and CKLW disc jockey. He passed away at the age of 94 on 4/17/20. He is recognized as the country's longest-serving top ten disc jockey.
Probably because I have been following Bob Seger for 50 years. Certainly one of the most prolific songwriters of his time. Like I said, he is my all-time favorite.
Bob is so young in this video it makes me want to weep! This song along with 2+2 is on My Mind and Persecution Smith are the best tunes of early Bob Seger and really take me back to when rock really rocked:-)
"Lucifer" is a good one too.....his "Live Bullet" album was his Best. I like "Smokin OP's" too.....his version of "If I Was A Carpenter" is the Best version imop.
God bless Robin Seymour for making Swingin' Time an ongoing showcase for indispensable masterpieces like this one. The world of rock and roll owes him a tremendous debt of gratitude.
Probably because I have been following Bob Seger for 50 years. Certainly one of the most prolific songwriters of his time. Like I said, he is my all-time favorite. Before he got popular and went international, songs like. Heavy Music, 2+2, Lucifer, East Side Story. The Smokin OP’s album.
They did. All of Seger's early singles from '66-'67 were remastered and released on a CD and Vinyl compilation about 2 years ago. Available on Amazon under "Heavy Music: The Complete Cameo Recordings 1966-1967" (Ballad of the Yellow Beret was not included for legal reasons)
I’m from Detroit and saw the Bob Seger system at Clarenceville high school in Livonia Michigan. Bob Seger, Chris Campbell on base, Drew Abbott on guitar, Charlie Martin on the drums, and Bob Schultz on keyboard. Early 70’s. Probably the most underrated songwriter and performer in rock ‘n’ roll history. Always been my favorite. Always will be.
I watched it too! Was it Swingin Time. He hosted that show with Tom Shannon I think. Keener 13 and Shannon from CKLW. Pretty sure. Great Music came out of Detroit from the '60s through the '70s. It wasn't till later that the rest of the country caught on to all the great groups in that area.
I can't believe Bob was so multi-talented.He plays lead & Rythem gutair.Solos & chords on keyboards. In his days w/ the Silver Bullet Band he just did vocals. His vocals went to a new level 1975 & on.Love is the key .Rock On BoB...
Look as un cool as it was everyone even the door's played to the record on some TV programs, , except my brother zall , who didn't strum a cord during a living spoonful show.
Seger played at our high school way back in the day, as did T-Rex. Loved being a teen in the 60's. It was freakin' great. Eastown, Grande, Olympia, and the Hideout were rockin' big time. Saw so many bands that are classics it was crazy. Even say the Amboy Dukes at Nortre Dame High School in Harper Woods, MI. I grew up in HW.
Just heard this amazing song for the first time and immediately wondered if Patti Smith incorporated the lyrics into "Land". Her "Go Johnny Go" is like an homage to Seger's "No Johnny No". Then I read a comment below that Patti actually covered East Side Story. I only knew Bob from his late 70s-80s radio hits, which always seemed schlocky to me. His early stuff is astounding. I also see an influence on Springsteen's early story-songs. Seger before the beard is awesome.
My favorite Bob Seger song of all time.. I enjoyed this period more than when he went "national".. Thanks for posting this.. also really like the Richard & the Young Lions clip too
Michael, check out Bob Seger Project, same thing. I always liked Bob, but I never knew he once was a legitimate rocker. I included this video on my eclectic playlist filled with lost classics & hidden gems, all era's & styles. Songs added daily. Hope YOU & all enjoy! :) ru-vid.com/group/PL240940E21E6C83E3
The great Robin Seymour introducing on of garage rock's absolute masterpieces! This was a #3 single on the chart of WKNR Keener 13 in October 1966 and is very much representative of Seger's work for Hideout and Cameo Records. Please, please, please feel free to post every Swingin' Time clip of not only Seger, but anyone else that you may have in your archives. Love it!!!!!!!
I'm from the Detroit area and it sometimes seems I should like Bob's music by default, but I never did....until I heard this. Wow, what a song. Dark, nice chord changes under a great melody with an incredibly moving story. Again, wow.
I remember this as a kid, coming home from school and watching "Swinging Time" with Robin Seymore.. Amazing song, this has to be around '67. Even though he put out great stuff, he was still regional. He didn't break out for at least 10 more years. Old Bob, still rocking 40 something years later. His last album "Face the Promise" was excellent,a rarity for an artist that's been around so long.
I agree the greatest song never heard. I did hear this song on the radio when it 1st came out. I lived close to Cleveland and heard it on a station out of Canada caller CKLW. It was a big hit in the Cleveland area and when i went to buy the record i still can remember a large sign in the store window saying we have East Side Story sadly it got stolen by my baby sitter who was also my sister in law Bonnie Pettet. I never got another copy of it and Bob Seger never put it on a album. This song A++++
This is frickin' fantastic! I loved it the first time I heard way back in the 80s. The epitome of a great "story" song, xlnt dynamics , great driving infectious tune!
The announcer/host is DJ Robin Seymour and the TV show is Swingin' Time . Detroit/Windsor dance show (Like American Bandstand) where we teens went to dance, see local bands/artists and be on TV. So glad it happened in my lifetime. UH-HUH!!!
Yes, he was a great talent from the beginning and had some great singles only Detroiters would remember. I notice that he is referred to as Bob (not Bobby) and that he had also started to transition to guitar from just organ. Saw him perform on the tennis court at a local high school once. Same HS also once had The Who in the gym auditorium! Detroit had such a great music scene back in those days.
Truly a brainy, hard-rocking and vocally clear song; it undeniably just lays all other 1960s bands to waste. And yet...I still say that Bob's best work was yet to come.
Loved hearing that on CKLW! First saw Bob in the late sixties at the Toledo Sports Arena with about 100 people and all the beer you can drink. Imagine that!
It was out of Windsor but was hugely popular in the Detroit area and featured a lot of Detroit bands like Seger, the Rationals, SRC and lots of others.
The HideOut Southfield Michigan 1966-67 people moving against each other as Bob and the Heard rocked out East Side Story - "has he a relative you know?". I'll never forget it.
used to go there too ! When The Kingsman came, Bob opened for them and later - he took me with him while they showed us their tour bus .... wow .... memories ....
Thank you so much for putting this up. I was'nt even sure any footage of Seger from the Hideout period still existed. A great song , and a great story.
Growing up in the sixties on the east side of detroit , michigan , when the guys were coming home from vietnam , we're buying hemi roadrunners in chargers as well as superbees And Them GTX'' Jamming out With the 8Btrack player Hearing this from your car is all over the neighborhood. Especially the guys with the HEMI'S four speed pistol grips Truly chevelle killers. Is looking for A friday night and Saturday On the prowl. Great memories. Rocking in a rolling with the ground shaking. Is Hemi's In our neighborhood Hearing this song from their cars 8 track players cars Send me a card. From their cars.
...yeah, I went to school in Farmington (now Farmington Hills, wtf?--it has ONE hill)..I'd race home and turn on the Black and White TV CKLW---Channel 9 and dance around with a mop handle singing along with Bob Seger and the Last Heard. Look at Pep Perrine on drums! Recall later at the Hideouts, he had those HUGE 90 degree ducts mounted above his head with tom-toms in them? Great song, I still listen to this song daily. Ten years later of hard work, Bob's big break through was NIGHT MOVES, his 11th album as I recall. Btw, I played a very good air guitar.
Brings back loads of memories of this band from The Sugar Shack, Valleydale Ballroom and even The Blue Dolphin Roller Rink in Ohio. Dan Honaker died in july 2009. Awesome video
Great song by Bob but my favorite is 'Heavy Music' which sold more copies than 'East Side Story" and was his biggest early hit. Bob grew up and graduated high school in Ann Arbor MI.
+Whip Splash YES!! Heavy Music is one of my all time favorite songs. Got it it on an album called "Michigan Rocks". Stooges, MC5... Best LP I ever had - haha
This song captures the film noir images of great movies like Blackboard Jungle or on The Waterfront. The angst of a young man who cant take being held down any more as his anger boils over. What a great song...lyrically and musically. This is Bob when he was scratchin for every dime and playing any gig he could get. The raw emotion disappeared when he started making money. I dont begrudge him his commercisl success...he more than paid his dues. Its just that the raw energy was gone.
This is Swingin' Time with host Robin Seymour,CKLW,Windsor Ontario.Early 1967 is my best guess as to the date.Early Seger was 10 times better than 'commercial Seger.' Many outside of the Detroit area don't realize that early Seger was a hard rocker.
I watched it, as it was my favorite song at the time. It's still one of my favorites. This was on New Year's Eve 1966. The following New Year's Eve he was on the same show doing Heavy Music.
@@whooziss I Love his early stuff.....like the "Smokin Op's" album......lots of keyboards.....his version of "If I Were a Carpenter" is the best version imop.
Jackson sang about our lives, he was bad to the bone. And will always be. I hope he rocks on for ever. God bless I hope he can keep rocking forever. He will with his great body of music
A classic video clip I watched on live tv, thanks for sharing! Growing up in Windsor, Ontario and listening to the giant CK, I knew Bob would go big the first time I heard this tune. Thanks Rosalie!!! :-) We were also fortunate enough to have Bob play in our high school - Riverside SS and we caught the tune up show at the Embassy Hotel with 10 or 12 of my best friends having the privilege of a front row table! Bob opened his Silver Bullet Band tour the next night at the Coco in Detroit.Okay!
He did East Detroit HS around 1970-71 with ‘’the Bob Seeger System’ Band. Great memories from that...Soon after he went national with the Silver Bullet Band.
Swingin Time was our local American Bandstand. We would run home from school and see Little Stevie Wonder, The Supremes and of course, the day my cousin , Mouse Pashkot, was the first local performer to appear on Swingin Time with The Original Manhattans, with a "Beatle" haircut. Robin Seymour segued to a commercial before their set. What marketing. Swingin Time, what a memory. Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, Rare Earth and ALL the GREAT MoTown acts, and we had Seeger in our own backyard(s).
I have to say I like the later style of Bob Seger better. I mean, this is great, too, but I thought Bob was just so damned cool with the Silver Bullet Band. I idolized him when I was a teenager. The Live Bullet album was sacred to me. I wanted look like Bob Seger with that long hair and leather jackets! Definitely one of my heros!!👍🤘✌️
A short period of time? The guy played 250 dates a year for the better part of a decade after this and all it got him was a big rep in Detroit and $500 gigs most everywhere else. Everybody wants to wear their rock purist hat and criticize the guy because it's easy. Those people didn't do crap for him early on when it mattered.
Saw Bob Segar at a place called "The Crows Nest" at 13 and Harper in the late 60's. Smoked a joint with him and a another band member, did not even like weed but it was Bob Segar so my claim to Fame. Always liked him. Saw him a # of times.
I was at a party in the late 70's, and I think we were listening to the 25th hour' Russ Gibbs radio show that aired on Saturday nights. He played a cover version of East side story by Patti Smith, it was almost as good as the original. Wish I could find that on You tube. Can anyone help me with that?
@dmkext This is when Seger rocked. Look for "Persecution Smith", "Chain Smokin'", 2+2," Vagrant Winter", "Florida Time", "Heavy Music"," Lookin Back", "Ivory", and "Sock It To Me Santa" just to name a few.
I remember hearing this on cklw but shortly after the powers that be at the big 8 changed their format to the foo foo top 40 your sister was listening too. Thank God we had wrif that made the fm system the home of rock & roll for Bob in Detroit.
wtf!! I didn't know Bob Seger did sick ass sh*t like this. This is ill. No wonder I always still respected Seger somehow, I always bump "Hollywood Nights" on the radio still.
cudaus1 , Swingin'Time and Teen Town on C.K.L.W. TV CHANNEL 9, Club 1270, twelve seven oh, now twelve seventy on W.X.Y.Z Channel 7, and if you are an Old Fart, you remember Detroit Bandstand with Dale Young on ch. 2 in Detroit.
