Many many years ago, myself and several friend were playing pool in an all night bowling alley, and pool room. We were the only people there. Until around 1AM a large man came in and approached the man at the desk. After talking for a few minutes the bowling alley attendant came up to my friends and I and started to tell us we had to leave. At which time the big guy came over and said "Since we were already there we could stay, but not to let anyone else in"... naturally my friends and I thought the place was being robbed and we were all gonna die. Turned out Bob Seager and his band (Who had just finished a concert in town) had rented the entire bowling alley so they could kick back and relax... we ended up partying with them all night... nicest guy you'd ever want to meet.
I don't think I have ever heard anybody say, "I don't like Bob Seger." His songs either send you into deep reflection or make you get up and rock out. The passion is always there.
For a long time I couldn't listen to Bob Seger songs because I had terrible associations with them. My mother was an abusive alcoholic and she always listened to Bob Seger when she drank. It was not a good time for me in the mid to late 1980s. But she passed away on 2012, and I have had some time to heal...and start listening to this music again.
@@tracieh215 That's very understandable that you would associate a certain music with a very bad time in your life. My friend can't be around the smell of whiskey because of her abusive father. It's too strong an association. I'm glad you are listening again and maybe Bob's music will help with the healing. His song "Understanding" always seemed like a very healing song to me.
@@tracieh215 Do either of you know Living Inside my Heart by Seger ? I never heard it on the radio but it was in a movie called About Last Night which starred Rob Lowe and Demi Moore. Here it is - let me know what you think of it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9S6HzUqv1wE.html
@@rkb2092 Only those 2? Such a narrow window to choose from The man has so many greats including Lock and load, Roll me away (my fav) and too many to list.
9x Over my 51 years I have experienced exactly what you just Described,1 in Vegas and 8 x back home (Detroit), and it rings so true across the board, A legend. Thank you for your Post.
I had the chance to see him 1980 or 81 and that sax solo at the end happened on the walkway right behind the section of seats I was seated in. Still right up there with the best concerts I’ve ever seen and that list includes Elvis, Dylan Rod Stewart and Billy Joel!
Bob Seger to me has always been the working man's rocker. Springsteen always seemed to be running away from his roots, while Seger seemed to embrace them.
I’ve always thought of Bob as “ bar music” . Being from Michigan, he was on every jukebox in every bar in Michigan. Nothings better than sitting in a old bar , late at night, Smokey and Bob comes on the jukebox
@@deuser I disagree in some parts. While yes, always on the jukebox in most bars, his music related in ways most cannot. Feel like a number, that makes ya think.
Here’s your Bob Seger rabbit hole: Hollywood Nights Still the Same Against the Wind Like A Rock We’ve Got Tonight Her Strut (MUST DO SOON!!) The Fire Down Below Katmandu Shame On The Moon
Is it only me that, after almost 30-40 years, really begin understand what the meaning to the songs are? And that if you look back, they hold true today even more so.
OH S**T, things just got serious. I love this song! It conveys emotions so well, just like all of Seger’s songs do. Bob Seger is one of America’s most underrated songwriters.
@@Borg1269 You know the story? Rosalie Trombley was the music director at top 40 radio station, CKLW, late 60s to early 80s. Station was in Canada, but could be heard well into Michigan and Ohio. She is said to have ignited careers of Kiss, Ted Nugent, Earth Wind and Fire, The Guess Who, and launched songs by Gordon Lightfoot, Paul Anka, BTO, Burton Cummings and even Elton John's "Bennie and the Jets". This song expressed Seger's frustration at his lack of play on the station at a certain point. They were friends, and she was generally a fan. Helped launch him beyond the Detroit region. But she never did play Rosalie.
His facial expressions are just like mine listening to this song as a grown man after all the years of me rolling my eyes to it while my mother would blast this song. My mom had a bad ass taste in music and this song will ALWAYS remind me of her. Miss her every day.
Chuck, what a great story. I'll bet your mom is smiling every time you think of her because of a song you hear. My kids are all grown but have called me during numerous "liquid fueled debates " about lyrics. One of their oldest friends recently reminded me when I wouldn't let them out of the car until "Hotel California " finished. They needed to hear it. All of it
@@fighthypocrites7036 haha. I'm like that with my kids. Haha. My mother passed away in the beginning of this year. Exactly 10 days after my birthday. (was born on Elvis and David Bowies b-day.). My mother was a HUGE rock n roll nut. Turned me onto Pink Floyd (my fav)... The Beatles, you get the point. I won't leave my car if certain songs are on. That's just how it is. We won't get out of the car if Comfortably Numb is on until it fades out. And ESPECIALLY if the Beatles - A day in the life comes on. Once that piano crashes at the end, I literally will NOT turn the car off until it fades out. Even my local radio station will NOT cut that part short. Haha👍🏼
@@fighthypocrites7036 haha. Amen to that.. Na, but I must say... My little ones don't really have a problem with it. They kinda love everything I love. I'm a big kid to them and they think I'm awesome. I'm sure that will all change a bit once they become teenagers. But for now, I'll take it. 👍🏼😂
I was moving a horse that I saved from becoming dog food about 4 hours away and it took 6 grown men almost an hour to get her in the trailer. My uncle was worried about her in the trailer alone and since I was the smallest I sat on hay for 4 house in a horse trailer. When we stopped to grab food we went into a bar that's famous for its hamburgers in San Antonio, NM The Owl then (The Buckhorn now) and when I walked in wind blown and my hair crazy and covered in horse shit and spit, everyone turned and looked at me. And right then I felt what Bob was signing about.
Perfectly said!!! I feel the exact same way!!! I especially loved his reaction to A Whiter Shade of Pale live in Denmark!!!! Awesome reaction!!!🤘🤘🤘💜💜💜🎶🎼🎵
This song is a masterpiece, truly. I first heard it at about 12 years old (1973). Anyone who hasn't heard the cover of this song by Metallica (yes, I'm serious!) you are really missing out. Fantastic, both versions.
Went to high school with a guy in the late 70's early 80's. He had a 90 cassette tape in his car that was nothing but "Turn The Page" over and over again. He gave me a ride home one day and had it playing. The tape screwed up and I asked him what he would listen to now? He reaches into the glove compartment and pulls out a 90 minute cassette tape. You guessed it, "Turn The Page" over and over again. Oh' yeah, the tape was marked, "Turn The Page #24."
That's the coolest thing I'll read all week. My boyfriend in 79-80 had a 67(?) pontiac with an 8 track player in it. The only tape I remember listening to was The Babys Head First
@ted ritola And then came Risky Business and ruined it. I loved that song when I first bought Stranger In Town. Seeing Tom Cruise in his briefs dancing or lip-synching (or whatever, I don't want to know), ruined a classic.
@@757optim Reminds me of the movie The Other Guys when Will Ferrell kept playing Little River Band in the car and Mark Wahlberg was ready to kill him ...
I grew up hearing Bob Seger singing in clubs as a kid, hanging outside of doors around Metro Detroit Area in the 60's. My son has seen him live at least 15 times. He's awesome
He is IMHO the voice of America's heartland. When he was young he had an old soul. Turn the page is his best, but Night Moves, Against The Wind and Still the Same are all close seconds. All about yearning for more in the face of our mortality.
Wistful and hopeful at the same time. I've wondered if the metal bands in the next generation were angry because there was no where left for dreams. Everything moved west, and by the 80s, where could you go?
If you can ever get to see this man in concert, Please GO you will not be disapointed. So, So glad I get to see him back in the 1979. One of the Greatest singers and songwriters of all times.
The first time i heard this song I had just gotten my driver's license and i was on my way to work. I had to pull over to listen, i was so blown away. As soon as I got off work I dashed out and bought it and i wore that sucker out. We were able to see Bob in concert about 10 years ago and he still absolutely blows it away.
Beautiful Loser is my favorite Seger song.... can't really go wrong with Rock and Roll never forgets and Still the same as well. I've always thought the best songs were never played enough. Turn the page was played every 5 minutes for a while so I got a little burned out. .. I haven't listened to this in forever! Thank you. .. I had forgotten just how good it was!
@@alanpeterson4939 ha!! Very Awesome! !!! I very nearly said .... only listen if you play Kathmandu after...and Travelin man before! But I had already written and was too lazy to edit.
This recording was from the Live Bullet album. Recorded in Detroit ♥️ I grew up with his music. First time I saw him was at a bar when I was 16. (they let all the young girls in 🙄). He’s our home grown gem! Just a great soul who always remembered his roots. He still lives there now 🎶
One of the greatest songs from one of the greatest singers ever!! His voice is soulful and smooth and that saxophone really sets the mood for the entire song. It's a perfect song.
I was blessed to see him perform in the 70’s. The saxophone player swung out over the audience playing his heart out. Thank you for reacting to who I consider the “Boss”.
Jamel_AKA_Jamal, "Her Strut", "Feel Like A Number", "Hollywood Nights", "Against the Wind", "Mainstreet", "Come To Poppa" and "Beautiful Loser" are some good Bob Seger songs to review!
@@daveingrey2615 You'll have fun with Horizontal Bop , Get out of Denver, Rock and Roll Never Forgets and of course the most famous Old Time Rock and Roll.
I agree "Feel Like A Number" and... U.M.C. "Making Thunderbirds" "Sunspot Baby" "Fire Down Below" "Horizontal Bop" Seger has so many great songs it is a shame classic rock stations have forgotten most of them.
I met Bob Seger In Northville Michigan a few times. He would pull up in the silver bullet band bus and stop at McDonald's restaurant after his tour or just before taking off on the road to start one. He bought me a burger 2 times. I was probably 6/7 years old, nice guy. His music has spanned at least 3 generations.
Seger is a good man. He took several years off touring to care for a sick child , just doing local shows. When things were good, he resumed his career. Old Time Rock and Roll is his song.
Was born in '75 but I never heard this until the early '90s. I still feel it. I never listen to it once or twice, I have to listen to it at least 7 or 8 times in a row.
He has a soulful voice that for the last few decades been labeled "blue eyed soul" most embrace it but Darryl Hall from Hall and Oats rejects the term “I hate it; it’s a racist term, It assumes I’m coming from the outside. There’s always been that thing in America, where if you’re a white guy and you’re singing or playing in a black idiom, it’s like: ‘Why is he doing that? I grew up listening to the greats of Motown.. There is no color to soul. Soul music comes from the heart".
True story: when I was in college, a girl who lived in my dorm was dating Bob's guitarist. Most folk didn't know anyone in the band other than Bob Seger and one day he came to pick her up wearing a jacket that read "BOB SEGER AND THE SILVER BULLET BAND GUITARIST" on the back. I thought to myself you know, without that jacket, I'd never pick him out of a crowd. ;)
Alto Reed was in my dental office a while back and much to my surprise he brought the sax from this song. He played this song and the whole office, patients and staff went nuts. He was a great guy and is missed. Rest In Peace.
I saw him twice in concert, and he sounded EXACTLY like this both times. This song brought down the house both times, the second concert the whole place sang along with him. He got a standing ovation after this song, which was not the last of the concert, for several minutes both times. Class act with enormous talent...
back in 1976, after discharge from the Army, I rode my bicycle from Detroit to Ft Huachuca, Arizona, roundtrip, and being a Bob Seger fan since 1965, I had this tune in my mind for the 5,000 mile trip... When I went into restaurants and would feel these thoughts, I tried to stay clean and worked for a meal when I would do dishes or wash windows. I have personally known Bob all these years and he was always helpful when I wanted to cheer up a cancer patient, with maybe an autograph or a photo... to let them know he wanted to cheer them up. I wish him all the best, now that he has retired, and hope he and his family are doing well. God Bless Bob and Cheers, JP Bear, Plymouth Michigan.
Ok Essential Bob Seger , not counting the two you have done, "Still the Same" "Against the Wind" "Her Strut" "We've Got Tonight""Old Time Rock and Roll"
Jamel_AKA_Jamal. How about mainstreet next? Pronounced “See-gur” You could spend several days covering Bob Seger songs. I’m 55 and have seen many concerts over the years but his is #1 on my list of all time! Thanks for the reaction!
He's an amazing singer. The song is basically about how tough it is to be a rich, famous, hugely successful rock star and he manages to get you to feal sorry for him. That's talent!
I've had this song stuck in my head the whole day. Played Metallica's version in the car, played this version at home later, and now one of my facebook connections shared this reaction video to his timeline leading me to your channel. I might start to think the universe is trying to tell me something... Anyway, you gained a follower. Thank you.
On that same record Metallica did a good version of BOC's "Astronomy" and a better version of Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey in the Jar" that was better than the original IMO.
My Husband was a musician, he did all Of Seger's songs, sounded just like him! He had that gravely sound to his voice. I sure do miss hearing that voice. R.I.P. Baby! You're singing with Elvis now!
I love your videos, don't mind when you stop to comment. But you seemed as entranced as we ALL were, back in the 70s, listening to his fabulous voice singing this soulful song. Rendered you speechless, so to speak, what a tribute....best wishes to you, thanks for letting us enjoy your honest reactions.
This song reminds me of my high school boyfriend, he left NY for Cali when I broke up with him because I was just too young to stay pinned down. I never saw him again. It turns out he was the best boyfriend I ever had. You live and learn that hindsight really is the clearest view.
R.I.P. Alto Reed, saxophone and friend for Bob for over 20 years. The songs Bob Seger has written {and performed} could stand on their own as poetry. His unique choice of words or phrases always say exactly what he wants the song to say.
So happy to see you're listening to, Detroit's own, Bob Seger! Iconic, legendary, and one of our own! ♥ His expression in this song is melancholy conveying the loneliness of being on the road! ♥ This tune is great! Thank you, so much, for highlighting so much of Detroit's music! From Motown, to ALL of Michigan talent! ♥ Once again, Thank You!
@@ms.chuckfu1088~ maybe, but, my friends wore those insults like a badge of honor! They were hardcore, long haired, and leather jacketed bikers, and, we girls loved them! Heck, I even married one 44 years ago!
He was diagnosed with throat cancer and disbanded. He was absent for several years. Dr had told he might not be able to speak let alone sing due to the harsh radiation and chemo. He survived, made a strong come back and still sounded GREAT! Voice was just as strong as before
