Bob Shane!!! What a great performer. The Kingston trio will always have a place in my heart and hopefully with my children and their children. Thank you dad for introducing me to great music. Bob, keep it up!!!
Been a Trio fan since Tom Dooley was big in high school. Formed my own Trio in college during the height of the folk music era and specialized in Trio songs. Loved them.
Huge fan of both the Trio, and this song. Their version of it is, in my opinion, the finest. Brings it to you to my eye every time I hear them do this.
Nice job. Fun to hear that distinctive voice again, Bob Shane. Started liking that original group when I was still in Jr. high, waiting for each new album.
This song was performed both live and lip synced at Desert C.A.M. Studios in La Quinta, CA, June 2014, by The Kingston Trio featuring the legendary Bob Shane (founder and sole survivor of the original Kingston Trio, with Nick Reynolds, Dave Guard, and later John Stewart). As are all music videos shot lip synced, once this version is edited and tons of footage from is inserted from our other cameras (we shot with 4 cameras), any weak moments of lip sync with either the vocals, or with the instruments, will all be covered and enhanced with editing. Shot against green screen and transferred to black for this rough version, the final will feature three different backdrops, including one on a venue stage to give the appearance of a live performance. Also, sound will be mixed and mastered differently, so the bass is brought down, and the instruments made to sparkle even more. This was all done in 2.5 takes, and hats off especially to Bill Zorn who beautifully improvised his way through the recorded track.
Obviously, this song is a lip-sink from when Bob Shane was himself a younger man. Bob was often known as someone who always had a story or a joke. That was cool and what made him a fine entertainer. But here in "the Dutchman", I think, he reveals a deeper part of his soul. I so loved the Trio in their heyday. I always dreamed that one day I might someday be able to sing like the Bob Shane of "The First Time". Never happened. God bless them all.
How about a shoutout to Michael Smith, the songwriter who created this classic tune? He grew up wanting to be a member of the Trio and, I believe, was invited to join, but declined at that point in his career.
@@deanguy66 Yes, I was following his last few weeks. It was very nice that he became fairly active on Facebook in his last several months. I am a big fan of his work. I cherish the many times I saw him play in Chicago and even once in San Francisco. He will be missed by many of us.
@@dangalender8748 I wrote a book on the Chicago music scene a few years back in which I claimed Michael was at the top of the mountain of Chicago songwriters. I also worked with The Kingston Trio in 1980 at Milwaukee Summerfest and I remember Bob Shane being a really nice guy.
