I am a European historian and Woodward is spot on. Hitler invaded and annexed his neighbors territories in order to 1) protect German minorities, 2) correct the historical wrong of the WW1 treaty, 3) bring back German glory, and 4) expand the range for German culture (lebensraum). Putin has invaded his neighbors 5 times now and annexed their land, saying he needs to 1) protect Russian minorities, 2) correct the historical wrong that was the break-up of the USSR, and 3) bring back the glory of Imperial Russia, and 4) expand the range of the "Russian world". And the Kremlin even threw in some anti-Semitism when Lavrov said the Jews were partially to blame for the Holocaust.

When I used to see print media photos of Woodward during Watergate I would never imagined that he would have a voice like he does. His coverage of the decision making behind W invading Iraq was great. Powell wanted to split from the whole program around the time just before the High Noon speech. Powell knew his performance at the UN was "not an Adlai Stevenson Moment." Woodward got the Iraq blunder correct.

I can't even imagine what Trump would say to Putin, except he'd want to babble and speak in generalities, assure Putin that he'll try to do more for him in the next four years, if he is elected. He'd say it, "I think it is important that we get along, have a good relationship." He might even tell Putin, "You know, I couldn't do anything last time, with all those bad guys around me. They're going to be gone this time, all of them." Trump wanted to remove sanctions against Russia in his first term, wanted Tillerson to revive the Exxon deal, for Exxon to help Putin with oil extraction in the Russian Arctic. Tillerson wouldn't do it. Advisors around Trump prevented him from removing other sanctions. And of course, now Putin is already going to do everything he can to help get Trump elected, because he believes Trump could withdraw support for Ukraine. Putin is obviously going to be recording anything Trump says in these phone calls to him, knowing it could be used against him. Trump must realize this. That's why I think if Trump is calling him, it's all done in very vague statements. Trump is not saying, "You help get me elected, and guaranteed, I'll do everything I can to get the US to withdraw aid from Ukraine, no more weapons or anything. I can't go to jail."

Before the war, Ukraine had an 800,000 man army. Russia's Special Military Operation "invaded" Ukraine with 200,000 soliders. Talk to any military person and they will tell you if you want to win a battle you should have a 3 to 1 advantdate. That advantage was backwards in the Russia-Ukraine war. There is a lot to consider about this war, but I can see clearly that the story we in the US and the West have been told is at the very least not the entire truth.
