Welcome back to Another BobBlast!
This week's BobBlast is the third in the series of Contrasts. The first BobBlast in this series discussed warm and cool, last week's featured Big and Little. This BobBlast takes advantage of using only black and white acrylic paint!
First, the big advantage of using black and white is there is less of a chance of making a colorful, muddy painting. No color! Next, without the distraction of color, you can focus on the shapes, their edges and a clear focal point at the very onset of the painting.
I start with a light grey tone wash - the mid tone. And while the paint is still wet, I sprinkle a few drops of isopropyl to make small eddies and ringlets in the paint. All special effects! Next - and you will see in the demo - I focus on the graphics of the alphabet letter "C" and the variations throughout and all over the painting. The composition is "meandering" - illustrated by my drawing back into the painting with more black and white acrylic paint.
So, that's your painting assignment! My concepts are usually simple, but I rely on being inventive, inquisitive and most importantly, a mad scientist with a paint brush! I am so thrilled to be a painter - especially right now, every day. And, boy do we ever have LOTS to paint, right now.
Stay where you create. Start with Contrast.

Hi Bob, I’m “older”. I’ve always done different creative projects and remember in medical school, suggesting an anatomy coloring book..was told I was crazy, maybe for young children…but certainly NOT for serious, detail oriented scientists. Now? They’re all over the place. My brilliant, recently deceased Son, was freaking out his Pre-K teachers, drawing and painting streptococcus, staph, skin cells he saw in my microscope…I wish I still had those pieces of art from my visionary son. He became my class’s mascot and muse. I should mention; I (and my son) were diagnosed as ADD LONG before it became a “popular” psych “label”. I had to “retire” early because of a spinal injury and genetic disorder which caused a domino effect physically. In the years since, I did research, was a counselor, went back to working with critters, wrote many articles when I got involved with fact-checking..and then my Son convinced me to learn about China’s history, culture, language..and best of all, the people who had captivated him the last 14 years of his life. Oh..and the food. But the highlight was learning Chinese brush painting with ink and natural pigment watercolors Right now though, I’m having trouble getting motivated…I WANT to, but two things are impeding what I KNOW would be an extremely cathartic activity; severe depression since I lost my Son in June..and “perfectionism”-an issue that has haunted my creativity all my life. I guess I can still hear and feel my parents mockery when I won an award for some squirrel drawings and paintings I did way back in high school. Of course, NOTHING I did in my life was ever satisfactory to my parents who repeatedly called me stupid, ugly, weird, deformed and retarded. Before my father passed away 3 years ago, he apologized for things he said and did and told me to separate myself from my mother and brother if I ever wanted any peace or happiness in my final years. He assured me she would never accept me and…well, it wasn’t nice, but I’d had friends, family, counselors and colleagues tell me the same things for 50 years. I finally cut the cord, as did my children..who she only accepted one as being her granddaughter..well, at least until my daughter tried to introduce her beautiful wife. Then, of course, it was MY fault for “destroying” my daughter..AND I supposedly did this to try and kill my mother. Yea..she’s got issues Unfortunately, so do I. I KNOW getting back into painting would help me a LOT. But, when some of my young Chinese friends visited Tibet this past month, took some breathtaking photos and asked me to paint these gorgeous mountains, turquoise rivers and endless valleys? I started making sketches, hated all of them, and haven’t picked up my ton of brushes, paints, ink sticks, etc. (well, except for trying to piece my most expensive ink sticks back together after my crazy cat tried to abscond with them..again. She is absolutely obsessed with my ink sticks-we have no idea why. She wants nothing to do with catnip, but acts like a loving maniac when she either steals an ink stick, gets into my ground ink, or plops down on top of my paintings. Go figure) Any advice for this older lady on getting motivated?

Take a course in Landmark. It helps you get over childhood Trauma so you can have a new narrative about your life before it's too late. It's a tough 3 day forum but do it and enjoy the freedom of no longer holding on to childhood trauma that has affected you all your life. Trust me. My husband and I both did it in Southern California years ago. It's never too late. When you're done with the course, paint your masterpiece. You can do this thing for yourself. Nothing else matters at this point in your old age except PEACE in your soul.
