I was a 19 year old soldier stationed in Korea when I first heard this song on the radio. Boy what memories that brings back to an old man. I would sing along listening to a little transistor radio when on guard duty.
The 20th century had 2 world wars, the destruction of the family and more martyrs murdered because of their faith in Christ than the previous 19 centuries combined. Technology isn’t the problem, evil has been around since the dawn of time.
How can anyone dislike this song? For a live recording, his voice is flawless. It just does not get any better than his. I grew up on this music. Thank you mom and dad for introducing me to this rich world of music of the 50's and 60's!
@@chuckschillingvideosHe said he related to the song because it told part of the story of his life. He didn'tclaim credit as composer. I love the lyrics and tune of the song and his rendition.
We sang this in Vietnam all of the time. It sure brings back a lot of memories, some good and some not so good but real memories in every way. Thanks Bobby and Norton771
One if the great songs. If you want to test a new singer, request this one. If he can nail it, he's country. If not, he's just bro pop with a baseball cap.
@Bobby Bare thank you for your response. I am a fan from my childhood once I First heard Numbers. I have grown to appreciate all of your music. My parents were big fans and lespecizlly oved your Old Dogs album. Thank you for all you have given us, sir.
It's Denmark and audiences weren't supposed to make any noise. I think it would be better if they at least looked like they were enjoying it, but that's cultural, too.
This song had special meaning to me too. It was one of the few songs my husband sang during his years with bands. He died in 2009, but still miss him everyday.
I've listen to this song all my life I'm in my 60's never get tired of hearing it...I drove a truck for 3 years and man I can relate to this song very much..Thanks Mr. Bobby for a well deserved song that still being played...Your a great Artist..
I am a professional motor coach operator. I drive from the Wichita Kansas Greyhound Bus Terminal to Pueblo, Colorado, which is 450 miles from home, so this is now officially my theme song. Just about brings tears to my eyes. Love it.
Bobby Bare was performing this concert in Oslo, Norway in April of 1964. He was accompanied by the Anita Kerr Singers and the Jim Reeves Band the "Blue Boys." This is truly one of my favorite classic country music songs. It is a shame that they don't write country music like this anymore.
We’re all getting older continually and it’s sad one by one these wonderful musicians will be gone. Sure hope there’s a heaven and a music section for all of us to hear our favorites throughout eternity. Thanks, Bobby Bare for you and your voice and songs.
My son was just deployed. This song makes me think of him so much. I miss him horribly . Being a single mom (my hubs/their dad was killed in a wreck in 2007) it's just been me and my children for 15yrs. He's 22 now, but he was my rock for so long. Don't know how I'm gonna make it so long without him. Just praying he makes it home safely every day and night.
I lost my son in 2018, and this is how I think of him, on his way somewhere out there, and me on the station waiting for my train to arrive, so I can catch up with him. But until then I will continue listen to great music
I lost my husband 10years ago so I know how hard it is to endure the pain, we just have to be strong for them okay. I'm a huge fan of Bobby bare his songs are so good it got me through those hard times, I also got the opportunity to meet him last year and became an official fan till date

Daddy always said he listened to this song and said he cried soo much wanting to come home, but he was a trucker and had to feed me and my brother....Rest In Peace Dad I miss you more and more!!!!
Bobby Bare's song use to keep me company when I was in the service in the late 60's. It help me to think of this song and hear it in my head when thousands of mile from home and all alone. Thanks Bobby !
Love it when Bobby laughs and sings "I'm five THOUSAND miles away from home" towards the end. Thus making the song, in 1964, like a plaintive letter from the GIs in Vietnam.
@@tedpeterson1156 good for you, smart customer. I didn't say BOBBY was saying he was in Nam. I said the SONG seems like it could have felt that way for GIs.

Oh what a classic. I'd give anything to go back to those happy days of innocence. Long live Mr. Bare & his great music. The fact he's singing in Germany shows the magnitude of his reach & appeal.
Wonder why this song makes a 40 year old man , who is not even that familiar with country music, weep...literally, with tears streaming down my cheeks. Actually, I know exactly why. It seems to be the song of the girl I used to love who is no more now. Rest in peace Vicki. You're home now.

You're absolutely right.... Good evening Sandy how are you doing over there hope you're having a wonderful day it's a lovely day that the lord has made.
Bobby Bare is still alive as of this writing. You know.... Many too young armed forces left and never returned! I like how Bobby is all dressed in just about all Black.. The sadness of it all. resonated with many J.Cash's memorial war songs. All the stone memorials. If only they could speak. Blessings to all whether it's you or your're a family member who survived. Let me know if you saw this. Love,
I'm a married girl living with in-laws, no matter how loving and caring they are towards me, I don't know how many miles I'm away from home- my real home. With the fragrance of my dad's sweat, and my mom's cooking, and the squeals of my siblings.
No, this is from a performance in Oslo, Norway in 1964!!! See also the "Detroit City" (my hometown) from the same place and time! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6G4bxA2Gfnc.html
This was my late father's favorite!...Especially when he was a single man doing time in the navy in the 60's. This fits him well as he travel the world then. We miss you dad!!
Teardrops fell on mama's note When I read the things she wrote She said, "We miss you son, we love you, come on home" Well, I didn't have to pack I had it all right on my back Now I'm 500 miles away from home Away from home, away from home Cold and tired and all alone Yes, I'm 500 miles away from home I know this is the same road I took the day I left home But it sure looks different now Well, I guess I look different too 'Cause time changes everything I wonder what they'll say When they see their boy looking this way Oh, I wonder what they'll say when I get home Can't remember when I ate It's just thumb and walk and wait And I'm still 500 miles away from home If my luck had been just right I'd be with them all tonight But I'm still 500 miles away from home Away from home, away from home Cold and tired and all alone Yes, I'm still 500 miles away from home Ho, I'm still 500 miles away from home Yyy
Already moved 12 times by the time I was 10; when this tune came out in '64 I could barely listen to it, so hard it was to find home. Bobby Bare was the first live performer I ever saw at age 14. Thank you.

I'm 76 now almost 77. I just wonder when my daughter will be thinking and saying the same thing. sure hope not soon. I love life even though nothing but aches and pains.
In Vietnam we sang this song allot as we got short ( days left on rotation) we changed it to 10,000 miles. The orther was we got to get out of this place
Michael Gayer but the vietnamese defeat you in that war, long live asian people, the home and place of the brave people,i say these because i m asian man,i m pro asian and not a pro american, your country colonized my country that resulted many deaths of my old compatriots in the past and they take away the bells for you believe it is your trophy in defeating us? huh? and if not for our tough president s criticizing your bad actions against us,you ll not return that bells, thank God that it comes to your minds, american to return back that bells wich do not belong to you,and this day,you didn t give your apology by saying sorry for what you have done and pay for it.guess what country it is you colonized in southeast asia from 1898 to 1946,guess now,it is in our history and your history,i know you know that.i m waiting for your answer.
@@cyrussebastian5385 Cyrus, you're full of $hit! The US never colonized nor wanted to colonize Viet Nam. The French (colonials) were there & the commies (russians) wanted it all. The southern part of Viet Nam was extremely rural and 3rd world, while the north was slightly more advanced. The russians controlled the north through Ho, while the N. Vietnamese ruthlessly attacked the south. This action drove the final nail into the division of Russia & China. Your knowledge of Asia & it's history seems to be somewhat limited and insufficient, thus probably your YT name...… You Are an Idiot and a Troll.....!
I was a ladd of 15 when I first heard american country music. An old sergeant of the us armee who frequently came by to our restaurant in the frankfort area, took me to the nco and I had the very pleasure to hear this great singer; btw my favorite album is still that "down and dirty", he released in the early '80s. - Do hope, that my English hasn't gone that bad.

20 years old and on a lark I hitched hike from Phoenix, ariz back to my hometown in Iowa. Flagstaff 5:00am so cold waiting for a ride . Oklahoma City praying for a ride because it’s going to rain any minute. Excelsior Springs, Mo at 2:00 in the morning just hoping the cops didn’t see me sleeping downtown under this awning. When I finally got home I sat down on a park bench in the town square and thanked God that I made it back in one piece and promised myself I would NEVER do such a dumbass thing again!!! This song was running through my mind on that whole journey.
the sound of the voice is so magnificent; they don't make'em like that anymore. So many artists from that era got that special voice and I can't describe it; listen to roy orbison, lee hazlewood, the ronettes; whatever; their voices are just so different than anything today; weird.. and I love it
Reason is because of the stereo equipment they recorded on and the sound of their voice was natural with zero editing other than noise reduction/ cancellation. Now day and since the 80s they have been using hi fi equipment which now is termed high res. Everything is digital now. Voices are encrypted and then decoded. Back then it was just the sound of minute scratches on vinyl
I emigrated from England and lived in Johannesburg South Africa in 1963. This was played on the juke box in cafe by the bus station. It resonated with me very much at the time.
I remember sitting in the barracks in 1974 singing this quietly to myself. I was 17 years old and it was the first time I had ever been away from home for any length of time.
Story of my life when I was a kid. My Ma was always there for us. She is gone now and I sure do miss her this Mothers Day Weekend. Great song and singer.
brings back memories of my dads' mom asking him "boy when you gonna see your old momma, i would see tears in his eyes we would all load up and go see mommaw

This song really hits hard when I listen to it. Even when I am home, it still makes me feel lonely. Also, for those of who say you can't use a 12-string for country, kiss it! Bobby Bare is one of the greatest country artists ever and he used 12-strings in his early years! I think the one he has in this video is a Gibson B-25 12.
@Case Southerland , my daddy was a self taught guitar player. He too played a 12 string and he sure could sing too. Had his own band and even his his own radio show for awhile. He sang only Country music.
been 450 miles from home for over 40yrs and yeah it still is home to me, Edinburgh always will be, its where I can exhale. love this song and where it takes me.

I had the pleasure of meeting him in 1994. I was working at a convenience store in south Florida, he came in with Little Jimmy Dickens. They were doing a fishing show with Wade Reynolds . He is truly a Southern gentleman.

Hedy West (April 6, 1938 - July 3, 2005) was an American folksinger and songwriter. She belonged to the same generation of folk revivalists as Joan Baez and Judy Collins. Her most famous song "500 Miles" is one of America's most popular folk songs. She was described by the English folk musician A. L. We can't forget HEDY WEST author of this music!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, flawless. Each emotion revealed in the meaning of his voice. First fell in love with 500 Miles Bobby Bare, I was right years ago. Cam. 63 now, it resonates.
