im 47, ive listened to this song most of my life, never hated it, its pretty smooth. TOTALLY DIDNT KNOW HE WAS WHITE! hes actually on tour, i would go see him
@@johnyfavor Me too! Bobby can't go anywhere without singing this song. He's even said that he would get "beat down" if he went to a town and didn't sing this song. It's the jam wherever anybody goes.
The entire black universe had a similar reaction when they first found out Bobby Caldwell (his NAME even sounds like a brotha that could be an uncle or cousin you know!) was white. An enduring classic. A great great great love song.
Bobby Caldwell was part of an entire era called, "Blue Eyed Soul," that parralelled one of the greatest, Black R&B eras. Some other groups, off the top of my head, that had that same sound: Hall & Oats, Doobie Brothers (Micheal McDonald), Ambrosia, Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, KC and the Sunshine Band, Average White Band and a few years later, Tina Marie, Marc Cohn and others.
We'll...he does, kind of. I mean whites have their talents and blacks have theirs. I've watched Bobby Caldwell sing this song in other videos when he's older and he sounds white. I think when he recovered the song, he practiced it sounding black but the black voice couldn't last forever...so now he sounds like a white guy singing the song. It's not about black and white but black people know their voices as do white people.
@DJ L33 I agree. It's funny cause in Jamaica where I'm from there are many races and we mostly all talk and sound the same because so a Chinese or White Jamaican artist sounds like what we would consider a typical Jamaican artist (i.e. Black). Now with Bobby Caldwell his sound is not typical of a white American artist because Black and White people in the US generally had such distinct music genres, speak different and just sound different when they sing. I think Bobby Caldwell's style and sound were very intentionally reflecting the African American sound. Hence the shock factor. There's nothing wrong with that but let's not pretend he doesn't sound like a Black man.
HAHAHAHA... This song came out when I was a kid. It was played strictly on “Black “ radio and “Smooth Jazz” stations .I just turned 47.. Trust.. most of the black community were shocked to learn this is a white dude . I think I just learned 3 years ago. The shock in your face was HOW MANY OF US FELT . Priceless reaction.
I'm 57 and I can tell you ... Back then we partied hard at the clubs. Black, white together getting down to the funk! It was a terrific time! That's why is so sad to see how messed up everything is today. Btw... one of my favorites: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pNj9bXKGOiI.html
When I hear a black man say a singer sounds black, I take that as a compliment to the singer. My mom LOVED Bobby Caldwell. I grew up listening to this type of music. Love your channel 💕
Hey, baby, dont you worry, I'm a 78 year old, loving. this song forever, but I thought it was a black singer! In our world, it didnt matter whether they were black or white!
The many shades of Soul.! 🧔🏻🧔🏼🧔🏽🧔🏾🧔🏿 The most important things 'cannot' be seen with the eyes. Your comment, "he sounds black". I don't see it as being an offensive comment. Unless someone thinks that being black is somehow a negative thing, it shouldn't be taken offensively in the least.
Soul is all colours- stop thinkng race!!! He has played with numeorus muscians all well known during his long career. Sam him at a bar in Miami in the late 70’s and was blon away by his voice!!!
@WELambert01 I never understood that lol Teena Marie never sounded black to me haha idk how people got so confused. Maybe it's a generation thing, I'm a millennial. Christina Aguilera took all the shock away or something. But Bobby Caldwell is a different story.
The reaction isn't really any different when white people find out he's black imo. I've been grooving to this since I first heard it as a kid on am radio and I just now found out he's white - my mind is blown...
1978 is when this song came out . I was 17 in high school - a totally white high school ! Everyone loved this song . I remember hearing it play on every radio station , every party and school dance ! Good times 🤗
Yes I always thought he was black, until just now when I saw the video. But I think the main reason that I assumed he was black was because of the musical arrangement. It totally sounds like something that Earth, Wind and Fire would've done. Heck, at some point in the past, I might've thought that it WAS Earth, Wind and Fire.
For Blue eyed soul, check out Hall and Oates, just about anything is good, but She's Gone, You Make My dreams Come True, Family Man, Say It Isn't So, I can't Go for That, Private Eyes, take your pick. Other subscribers can possibly give you a consensus. I didn't mention Maneater, though it's one of their biggest hits, simply because it's so obviously contrived and formulaic, like the record company had them write it just for a radio hit. Daryl Hall is one of the greats for sure. You'll wind up downloading their entire catalogue and adding it to your collection. They are still the #1 duo as far as hits and sales of all time. They'll probably never be passed.
@@lll9416 , Sarah Smiles is great, Out of Touch-Out of Time, One on One. several dozen great tunes. They were always at the top. 40 million records, 6 #1s, 34 top 100s, most in the top 40.
Charles B. Bobby Caldwell is the only “Blue Eyed Soul” performer to precisely and unpretentiously nail that sweet, funky, soul, thang like a real Black Soul Sanger! The entirety of that recording is on point. Arrangement, Groove, and that sweet sweet funky thang. He made Black music, in a way that had sincerity, integrity and true respect, reverence, and understanding of Black music and the style of the 70’s. 🤘🏾
@@madmonkmedicine , I don't disagree, and I love the track as he performed it. It's really good on vinyl and high quality sound systems, but I find Go West's production to be a bit better. It's little things, but for me GW is a better track. I also think that while 70s studio production methods were very good, when the 80s rolled around, especially mid 80s, you had more dynamic range available to play with. You could get more punchy bass tones , bass drums, low Hrz synths, and had more head room for high to expand without distortion or having to artificially cancel noise. You had better microphone tech for recording. I think that if Caldwell had cut that same track in the same period that GW did, it would be as good or better. There was just so much more available to sound board engineers and producers, not just in equipment, but in techniques. Little things like mic placement, things learned by experimentation along the way. Finally, each person's ear is tuned differently, and not everyone gets the same vibe. So, I'm not saying one is right and one is wrong, just that my personal opinion is that the GW version is better, at least to my ears. The main thing is both are fantastic and we can enjoy them both, and GW thought enough of the track to cover it.
Moses, I think you'd like a lot of GW's originals as well. Here's their live version of this song though, I think you'll enjoy it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AEYXLZ6oO9M.html
I am a child of the sixties and seventies. I have also been a musician for over 30 years. I have lived through the rise of American rock and roll, the British invasion, the Motown sound, American folk singers. As a performer I have played thousands of classical and jazz standards, and music from the Great American Songbook. I have seen disco come and go. I witnessed the birth of punk rock, new wave, rap and hip hop, 80's hair bands, heavy metal music, grunge rock, boy bands and girl groups, the country music explosion, techno music and the music we listen to today. With all that being said Bobby Caldwell is by far my favorite Male vocal of all time and you can see I have a huge list that I can choose from. He may not have the hits like some of my other favorites but he sure can sing. I have had the privilege to see him perform live twice. Great Voice.
Big fan of Bobby Caldwell here, great voice. You need to check out Boz Scaggs, maybe the quintessential blue eyed soul artist, Lowdown, Silk Degrees and the list is just starting.
Barbara Colon I live in Arizona. I heard of the song on old school radio stations and I just love it! ❤️💖 Excuse the enthusiasm; I just really dig the song. ☺️
Me too! I thought he was black too! Way back when Rick Astley first released “never gonna give you up” everyone thought he was black too! Then they saw this pale ginger guy from the north of England! lololol On a side note, always loved this song, I first heard this in a DJ’s set in Ibiza in the summer of 97’, Bobby Caldwell was so underrated and deserved much bigger success.
I just came across your channel... while searching Bobby Caldwell. What you said in the beginning about " don't subscribe until you have watched some of my content first, etc. I appreciate your honesty in giving the viewers an option.. 👍God bless you
No we can't get away from it. I have always thought this was a black man singing it! Just like I can't get away from people thinking I'm black just because of my name!!! Alot of times I just go along with it. I guess I'm not PC! But I am a MRMI!!! LOL 🤣
@@Septima68 like I never heard that before. And before everyone starts with all the other Italian names. Let me give you something else to have fun with.... If all y'all think you can handle it.... For almost 37 year's my last name was one all will recognize from the movies hint 007 is my Daddy!!!! Still want to make fun of my name? LOL 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@notgaybear5544 believe it or not no one in my hometown ever associated my name as black. As a matter of fact the first black child was named after me. I worked with her mother who thought my name was beautiful. It wasn't until the late 80's early'90's that people started associating my name with a black person. Before that it was just all the Italian food names and then with Bond for a last name came "I bet James is you Dad". Now that was fun for me because I got to say "as a matter of fact he is.". Ever now and then I would get and your uncle is James Bond so I would have to correct them! LOL 🤣 🤣🤣🤣 My mama want my sister and I to have unique names she did a great job with mine!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You don't have to EXPLAIN YOURSELF, he does sound black , this is a Soulful Sound. one great sound., I rolled off my chair from your expression, I loved this SONG alot, great times.
Portland Oregon USA 🇺🇸 I’m 59 years old & I never heard of him or his music until this video appeared in my feed. WOW ! Black man with a white skin ! This dude gotta be THE FIRST BLUE-EYED SOUL SINGER 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
I was in Junior College when this came out, bell bottoms, platform shoes and long blonde hair, and this song is as sweet now as it was then. Now as a 68 year old white guy I still enjoy it almost as much as I enjoyed your reaction to it. My friend, your face and reaction was priceless, and thank you for being honest. I listened to music for music sake and never attached any labels to it, good music was good music. Just got introduced to Metalica, Sandman while at the gym, so never lock yourself in a box of one or two genres of music. Thank you for being you
I'm white and I didn't take it that way. I heard it as you were saying it was a white guy doing soul for soul's sake. No crossover just true soul. That's the reverse of In Living Color. I love that song too because it's a TRUE rock song coming from black guys. I get where you're coming from. That's how I took it anyway.
I have been listening to this reaction ever since you did it. It's like every I don't know maybe two or three weeks. I gotta watch it cause I love your reaction.
Hi Just heard this old skool tune at a festival 2 weeks ago in the UK. I knew this song from back in the day and thought let me look up that tune. I was a bit surprised as I only ever heard it on black pirate/underground radio stations here. He has a cool voice and our souls have no colour. One love, unity consciousness! 💜
This song goes way back for me and every time I heard this song I thought wow this brother has a great voice then when I found out he wasn't a brother it shocked me but it showed me that just because you sound like a brother doesn't mean you are. This dude has more of a brother voice than some brothers out there. Enjoy the great song and you're right you're reaction was spot-on predictable. LOL
It was worth seeing this video just to see your expression when you saw his face! When this originally dropped, Caldwell received a nomination for 'Best New Black Artist'! Even the award shows didn't know that he was white!
As a massive soul fan since the 80's, and on buying this song when it was released back then, I have always thought he was black, until I watched this video. I am just as surprised!! It's an amazing song!!!
Chile. I'm 70 years old and heard this when it first came out. EVERYBODY thought he was Black. And NOBODY believed he was White until they saw him. Then and now it's the same. It's this whole song, and pretty much everything he's written (he co-authored this), it's the groove, the lick, the harmonies are stereotypically Black. He grew up and started jamin' early with Black people. That helped, but he's got his own swag. Mr. Caldwell is FANTABULOUS! Thank you for posting your reaction and real commentary.
Great song. I think everyone has the same reaction when they see Bobby for the first time. His voice and the jazz sound, well everyone just assumes he's a black guy. Love this song.
I had black guys argue with me they said this is a black man don't try and claim he's white check out some of the sites of the song with him singing no matter if he was white or black the black community loved this song and he used to open up for Natalie Cole back in the day and then loved him I did not see a picture of him for 7 years even the album cover had him in the shadows by the time people found out it was already a classic it was played on black stations white stations R&B stations but if you notice the album cover did not show his face and the original video was not seen a lot at the local roller rink all the brothers would go wild when this came on and skate around when couples only came on the ladies loved it that's all I got for say if it sounds good does it matter who's doing it if Natalie Cole wanted him you know the rest one other thing why do you Brothers always how to imitate a white sounding voice when you say people are saying it's called blue eye soul talk in your own voice don't sound like a racist but I love you man you are sharp and you know what you're talkin about
Wondering why they kept him in the shadows...did they think that black people wouldn't listen, or..buy his records/tapes? Like I have said before...99% of the time, I know if I hear a black, or..white voice. We pronounce and phrase things differently.
I was familiar with the song and artist, so I couldn't wait to see the look on your face, when u saw Bobby Caldwell was White, and it was priceless! I almost fell out of my chair laughing. By the way, Natalie Cole sang it also. Don't know if you've heard AWB, but listen to their song "A Love Of Your Own."
Your reaction was like my face when I was young and found out Teena Marie was white! HA! Back then the record companies didn't put the faces of the Blue Eyed Soul singers on the album covers. It took a long time to find out some of them were white.
