The most under-appreciated entertainer in the last 100 years. He excelled at most pop genres and was the ultimate showman. Had he lived a normal life span, would have more than likely became a top tier film actor in his later years.
The next Sinatra or Martin....yeah, that was a good possibility, as was a long running sitcom with the right idea, though that might have been just too much of a strain for him. The guy had all that potential but ill health put paid to it. It's amazing that he'd still complete shows with oxygen bottles in the wings, what a trouper.
@@markcuffe4610 I've always been amazed at this talent, too (Bobby Darin that is, not Troy) - singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist, and drummer. Great showman on stage, too. Have you ever heard his song 'Jive' from his folk era? It's lovely!
Bobby Darin songwriter, guitarist, piano player, drummer, singer, actor, comedian. It wouldn't surprise me if he helped Einstein with his theory of relativity on the side.
It is little known, but he was an excellent chess player. One of the last projects of his life was to create and sponsor what he thought would be the greatest Chess tournament of all time. The plan was to invite Fischer, Mecking, Karpov, Korchnoi, Larsen, Portisch,Spassky, Hort, Glgoric, Hubner, Tal and a few others. He hoped to lure Fischer by offering a huge sum of money to him. Unfortunately, he died before his plan could come to fruition.
The amazingly talented Bobby Darin, back in an age where you had to be able to cover every area in the entertainment business to make it.He is up there with every one of those icons he impersonated. His one liners were hilarious.
Go to this address and view a video of "What's My Line" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d6KkPN3VAbQ.html and listen to his brief impression of Bing Crosby, it was a knockout. I'm like you, I had no idea the son of a gun did impressions too. Although since he could do just about everything else, I calmed down and realized I shouldn't be so surprised. BTW, his acting was so natural, this guy was simply super. And decades ago, I automatically would say Sammy Davis Jr. was the greatest entertainer. But when youTube came along and I saw videos of Darin I realized Sammy had company and it's simply a coin toss. The only thing Sammy got on Darin is tap dancing, Darin edges him due to his acting, covering and recreating a song, and song writing abilities etc., sorry Sammy. Actually after Darin's death Sammy said something or other that Darin was the only artist he did not want to follow onstage, which is quite a complement ... and I believe him.
He grew up with a lot of love & encouragement. His grandmother adored him & he adored her. She lived her life for him and he turned out to be everything she could have hoped for.
Bobby Darin's talent was simply extraordinary - like nobody else. He was a genius in every respect - as a singer, as an actor, as a comedian, as an impersonator. I'm sure if he had tried his hand at nuclear physics he would have excelled at that too. What a guy! Too bad there is no-one today in his league. The Robert Mitchum impersonation creased me! That was hilarious!!!
Anita, I kid you not, my father was best of friends with Bobby Darin between 57-67. due to them being recording artists in New York. Darin is a totally unheralded all round genius.
Great singer, songwriter, actor, all round entertainer, and such a handsome man. In the short time he was here, he achieved so much and won the hearts of so many...mine included...and he lives on in those hearts and is remembered with much love.
Bobby was a class act who left far too early. Like Sammy Davis Jnr, he was a superb mimic. Hard to believe he was in his mid-twenties, when he performed this skit. To think he only made it to 37 years of age......
I think maybe they didn’t have the patience to wait for the long set up. Also, many voices may not recognizable to younger ears. I’m 64 and remember them all👍👍
Bobby is one heck of an entertainer and his impressions of different stars is awesome. Whatever he did it was always giving 1,000 percent. There will never be another Bobby Darin, not even close to either. Yes you are right, only the good pass young. Obnoxious he was not, but a genius and perfectionist yes. Bobby could do it all and did, thank goodness for that.
Susan Silva Could not agree more---this man simply had UNGODLY talent!! I would have forked over a couple C notes EASY to have a front row seat at a club like the Copa to see a performance like this!!
Back at the height of his fame Bobby Darin really had no equal. He defied categories because he did so many things well. He sang pop, folk, the blues and the wonderful compositions of Tim Hardin like "If I Were A Carpenter" and did it all better than just about anyone else. Add to that his talent as an impressionist and an actor and he was really quite unique. So sad that his life was cut short by illness.
Bobby did many TV guest star roles and was in several movies in which his performance stood out as memorably fine. Hell is for Heroes is one. He was a fine actor, singer, and the best performer of a song of his generation, meaning the best performer of a song of ANY generation! Look up his performance of "Once Upon a Time" here on RU-vid, and there you'll see the great actor and the great singer. Also, "Happy" here on RU-vid.
+nyterpfan You have to get Bobby's album "Two of a Kind" with Johnny Mercer from 1961. It's a wonderful, joyful record and Bobby nails Groucho, W.C., and Dean Martin on it - his hilarious spot-on impressions are on 1% of this man's brilliance!
After you discover Bobby Darin, there really is no need to look further because he is so talented, his talent eclipses everyone else out there including Elvis and John Lennon, both of whom I love. It's hard to compare anyone to John Lennon, since Lennon was such a great artist too, but overall, as a singer, there is noone to compare with Darin. I love all the videos of him on youtube. They're all amazing, and there are definitely not enough up there. I wish there was more video of Sandra Dee too
Kevin Spacy also does outstanding impressions. I can see why he could connect and identify with Bobby Darin and pushed to have the movie made about Darin's life in which Spacey played Bobby Darin.
Reading all these comments brought a few tears to my eyes. I don’t feel that Bobby got the recognition he deserved or deserves. However, the comments spoke to what an unbelievable talent he was and how much Bobby’s fans recognize that and how much love we still have for him. After all these years, 50, next year, he is still greatly missed. (11/21/2022) 😢❤
One of The Greatest-most- versatile Performers EVER! The Man could Dance, Sing ( Folk, R&B, Swing, Country? Blues, Jazz) He could Act, And In this Performance do impressions? ( and shame on the 75👇) He was A LEGEND! RIP BOBBY D!
Although I have been critical of RU-vid in the past I must applaud their ability to enable me to look back in time at some of the greatest performers of our time like Mr Bobby Darren. If he were alive today his heart surgery would be considered routine mores the pity we lost a wonderful talent
Frank was many things. Dean had a terrific style and persona. Tony had the power. But the King of the Lounge Singers is definitely Bobby. Wow - what a talent.
I've been ignorant of the talent of this man. I barely knew of him as a singer and had no idea of his other abilities. Might be because I wasn't born 'til '63. I'm amazed and inspired to search for more. There seems to be a dearth of multi-faceted talent today, not that they don't exist, just that they seem scarce. Nearly anybody can be a celebrity....some for the wrong reasons/actions. The same internet that makes those people also provided me with the ability to view this gem.
Oh My God …..thank you thank you for this …I did not know Bobby Darin could do this …….all I can say is ….wow 😅……thank you again for this …I really enjoyed it …..rest in peace Bobby
An amazingly versatile talent - his guest starring episode of the Jack Benny Show from 1964 is hilarious - and make sure and pick up Bobby Darin and Johnny Mercer's "Two of a Kind" LP for Bobby's AMAZING in-studio singing impressions during "Ace in the Hole!"
Bobby Darin was nominated for an Oscar in 1964 for Best Supporting Actor in the film "Captain Newman, M.D." He also wrote and sang a great song titled "Simple Song of Freedom". Check it out. A performer of MANY talents!
INCREDIBLE range of INCREDIBLE talents in one beautiful, loveable person. Wow, were we lucky to live in the same world and time. Thank you, ILoveRayMilland for uploading. As long as I've loved Bobby (since the 60s), I never saw this before. Now People, if you haven't already seen them, see on YT, Bobby's DEVESTATING performance of "Once Upon a Time", and his beautiful "Happy".
The version on Spotify is amazing, too. His Jerry Lewis impression is the best I’ve ever heard. And it just so happens that Bobby and Jerry are my two favorite humans that have ever lived.
Cagney, Brennan, Grant, Fields, Gable et. al tremendous range as well as pinpoint accuracy. Serious rival for Frank Gorshin and Rich Little at that time.
I love Bobby, his beloved Sandy and Dodd..forever. I bought his old OLD TUNES in which he shows his other real voice...a singer who has a great talent..and..a great actor..had he lived longer, we would have seen it!
There was a reason this guy was one of my dad's all time favorites, and I think I just saw a sample of why. What a great performer--I don't think there was anything he put his hand to that wasn't absolutely stellar.
Great impressions! Another reason to love Bobby Darin. What a great and versatile performer. One of the all time greats, right up there with Dino, Frank and Sammy. The Curtain Falls too soon sometimes......
When I first heard Dream Lover..I was hooked..or, was it Splish Splash? The dates escape me. But the fact that I heard a singer with fabulous timeing...tempo..phrasing....Bobby Darin could, and did, sing anything he put his mind to. Then, Mack The Knife. Bobby Darin had the audacity to sing a number that Louis made famous!!..We were lucky in Australia, to get occasional clips in the ..probably..only American Entertainment show other than Andy Williams, featuring Rock'n''roll performers and the like..And..there was Bobby Darin..singing Mack The Knife and doing his wonderful little ""Two Step"" to "Look Out Old Mackey Is Back!!"..Which was the way he finished this number!! I was doubly hooked and tried to follow Bobby's career..his movies..his marriage to Sandra Dee....He was the ultimate performer!! As a Sinatra fan I thought Bobby approached a song in a sharper and more soulful manner...I remember exactly where I was living and exactly what I was doing when I heard that Bobby had died..the lights went out in the entertainment business!! If someone could find a clip where Bobby does that little dance routine when he is singing Mack..it would be a wonderful tribute....and, yes, he did show the strain of having a serious heart problem. I have a fabulous DVD of his where he says to the audience that he needs to ... basically take a break, on stage, to "catch"" his breath. The info on this DVD states hat it is a recording of the last show Bobby performed prior to undertaking further surgery. The look in his eyes as he spoke to the audience and left the stage..said it all!!! Miss you Bobby Darin..
He was dead before I was born, good news... I admire his time and value mine after hearing his story. Best part we get to hear his songs anytime we want, thanks to audio.....
