One of the crucial rules of comedy, ya gotta know your audience. Hank generally doesn't understand Bobby's comedy, or anyone else's for that matter but when it involves something that he does understand like propane, then he laughs. They were even bonding by teaching each other about their passions instead of one inflicting it on the other.
I agree with you about Hank and Bobby bonding. Most of what Bobby really likes to do either makes Hank nervous or outright scares him. It's good to see them enjoying something together.
