I scoured the 'net to find where this is in the movie. I finally found it at 01:19:00, in case anyone else wants to find it on their own DVD. I wish they'd release this movie on Blu-ray. The scenery is really the best part of the whole movie, along with this excellent morality vignette.
Way back in my early 20s I used to be a keen foil sword fencer. I entered many competitions and won quite a few medals, although I never won the gold. One competition I will never forget. I come up against this guy and within a few seconds I knew I could beat him so I was quite relaxed. Anyways, one of his thrusts caught me out and I felt his sword hit my shoulder. These swords are electrified and when they land on your 'wired' jacket a light goes on telling that you have been hit. However, this time the light did not go on. I stopped the fight and told the judge that I had been hit. The judge tested the swords and the light went on: "They seem to be working fine," he said. However I insisted my opponent got the point. The winner of a bout is the first to get five hits. So now I was one hit down. Anyways we continued the bout and once again I felt his sword land on my shoulder again, and, just as before, the light did not go on. For the second time I stopped the fight and just as before the judge tested the swords and all seemed fine. "Are you sure you want to give a point away, the swords seem fine" Said the Judge. "The way I see it is, if these were real swords I would be wounded. I felt his sword hit my shoulder and that is all that matters" I explained. "OK son, it's your decision" said the Judge. Well I actually went on to win that bout but I did not win the competition. I came second and so won the silver medal. However, when I went up onto the podium to get the medal something magical happened. The crowd stood on their chairs and cheered so loud the roof nearly came off. The gorgeous girl, who was handing out the medals, smiled at me. "What on earth are they cheering at!?" I asked her. As this gorgeous girl was putting the medal over my head she whispered in my ear: "Don't you know?! What you did today reminded everyone what honour in sport is?" And then she kissed me on the cheek. It turned out the incident of me giving away points had spread around the arena like wild fire. "We all wanted you to win" she said, and looked deep into my eyes when she said it. Later that evening I was in the bar of my hotel and guess who walked in ?That very same gorgeous girl and she she looked stunning wearing tight jeans and a white top that showed her showed of her lovely shoulders. I was staying overnight and driving back the next day so needless to say I never slept alone that night. To this day I cant decide which experience gave me the most joy. The night with that gorgeous girl or that standing ovation.

I was too young and ambitious at the time to fall in love and of course when we are young we believe we will be young forever and so don't always appreciate the gifts that fall into our lap. A lifetime later I now understand that when a woman chooses you it is a mighty compliment and one that should not be taken for granted. I guess I was still high from the cheering of the crowd to understand that back then. But I wont deny that the one night we had together was somewhat passionate as well as romantic. Her name was Racheal and she looked kind of like a young Jennifer Lawrence, but with blond hair, and she was just as self confident. We showered together and did the deed three times. The next morning her hair was all out of place but her eyes were just as beautiful. She watched me take a morning shower and wanted to do the deed one last time. I would love to say that we did but I would be lying. I was exhausted and just didn't have it in me. So I got dressed while she lay in the bed and we had one last kiss before I left. Driving back down the motorway I could hardly stay awake and so stopped at a petrol station cafe to have a strong coffee. When I put my hand in my pocked to get my credit card I felt a piece of paper in there. It seems Rachael had secretly placed in a note and it read; "Thanks for the knight Sir Lancelot. If on your travels you come back this way again give me a call" With her a phone number at the bottom. I never saw her again. I carried on fencing for about a year and half more until my fencing ambitions were cut short due to being in a car accident in which my arm was broken in three places. Such is life.
@@elliotl1945 lnteresting you say that (and thank you) because, over the past couple of years a number of people have told me that. It could be l missed my calling due to something in my childhood. You see my mother was actually a writer. She wrote short stories for a local newspaper. Sadly she died of an asthma attack when l was only 7. My father was unable to take care of me because his job meant he had to travel a lot. So l was shifted around to various aunts and uncles and that meant l attended many different schools. In those days there was no national curriculum so each school had its own ways. Basically this meant my education was somewhat erratic, to put it mildy, not the least my education of the english language. To this day l do not understand grammar. It was not until age 14 that l finally ended up at the same school and my education began. I excelled in science and art but l was unexpectedly praised for something else; story telling. My english teacher was actually an author herself and had several novels to her name, or so people said. Anyway, every friday she would give the class weekend homework which was to write a short story. We would hand it in on the monday and on the friday she would anounce a "winner" that would be read out in the class. I'm not boasting but my stories were read out a lot. Then one day, after another one of my stories had been chosen, she said this: "I have been teaching english for 23 years and l have written several novels, but in all that time only one pupil l believe could be a writer. And that is Arthur. His stories captivate you and either have you laughing or in tears. However, he has no idea what a coma, a full stop or a paragraph is" When l got my homework back my story was covered with red pen from all the corrections. Sadly l took that comment to mean l could never be a writer because l could never master grama. It was later discovered l also had dislexia. So you see my good fellow that was why l chose art instead. But telling stories never went away and have always been part of my life. In my circle of friends l am known for them. At university (studying fine art) l became legendary for my story telling. I shared a house with 4 lads and every friday l started telling a short story (while we smoked a certain substance) Just to make it fun l toId them that the story was true but l would put in a deliberate lie and they were to try and "guess the lie." It was a hilarious situation because they never knew the entire story was a lie, l just made the stories up lol. Word got around and more students started coming to; "hear Arthur's stories." By the second year my story nights were packed full of students. Only lads though, no girls were allowed.Try to imagibe the scene. Me sat in my bed in my pyjamas with a room packed full of srudents. I would put a roll-up "special" cigarette to my mouth as a signal that l was to begin the story. The room that had been bubbling with chatter room would suddenly become silent. Occaisionsly one would shout; "Quiet, he's starting." Im not lying when l tell you l had everyone in the palm of my hand, in a good way l mean. Ah, l miss those day sometimes. Strange you know, even though l chose art as a career, my artwork has never quite got the same attention as my stories have. So it could well be l chose the wrong path. Such is life. Recently l have been thinking of trying to write a novel as l have a wonderful enspiring story in my head and so perhaps your comment is a sign l should start. Thank you again and take care.

Doesn't matter. We play a gentleman's game. The rules are the rules. The only true victories in golf are enjoyed by those who accomplished them with honesty and integrity. In short, when you cheat, you cheat yourself. You cheat yourself of the opportunity for an authentic victory. In golf, there is nothing more sad I can think of.

bobby called the stroke in himself for money reasons...not because of the bank robbing statment but because sports betting corruption has been around since any sport was allowed to be bet on....yes my friends bookies and loan sharks of america go back to the 20's even further lol....
He didn't "call a penalty on himself". He reported what he considered a "foul" to the official and at that point it was out of his hands. There's nothing "honorable" out it just like he said there wasn't and you call a foul like that to preserve your chance to WIN. Not to throw it away. Having that stroke back wouldn't have won him the tournament either way and if somebody had seen it and reported it later and had a "witness" backing them up if he'd TIED the match, his career would have been over.
There's no 'foul' in golf, he indeed called the penalty on himself, that's how golf works. No one else saw the ball move except him, you have no points made whatsoever.

Think about the extreme novelty of this kind of thinking, the noble impulse to hold yourself to a higher standard than anyone else is willing to impose - then think about the total absence of that kind of honor in the White House. My point is 100% accurate. If we admire the character displayed by Bobby Jones, in this scene, then we should reject is exact opposite when displayed in our President. But we don't. One person is concerned about ethical degeneration and our nation's devaluing of character, and one person says 'ya da yada'. That about sums it up. One day your kids or your kid's kids will look up from the ruins of democracy and wonder what life would have been like if there hadn't been so many jelly-spined lackeys rolling over for Trump.
