Follow MprooV on Twitter / mproovapp The 1970 Interzonal was held in Palma de Mallorca from November 9-December 12, and was the last Interzonal held as a one-section round robin. With the tournament swelling to 24 players and further expansion on the way, future changes were inevitable. The following players vied for six slots in the candidates matches to be held in 1971: William G Addison, Miroslav Filip, Robert James Fischer, Efim Geller, Svetozar Gligoric, Vlastimil Hort, Robert Huebner, Borislav Ivkov, Eleazar Jimenez Zerquera, Bent Larsen, Milan Matulovic, Henrique Mecking, Dragoljub Minic, Renato Naranja, Oscar Panno, Lev Polugaevsky, Lajos Portisch, Samuel Reshevsky, Jorge Alberto Rubinetti, Vasily Smyslov, Duncan Suttles, Mark Taimanov, Wolfgang Uhlmann, Tudev Ujtumen..
Ujtumen from Mongolia, about as outside as an outsider could get, actually held the lead by himself after round 3. However, reality and Robert J. Fischer set in, as the American quickly soared to a dominating position. The other contenders didn't worry about it too much; after all, you only had to finish in the top six to qualify for the Candidates, and there was even a seventh spot open for a reserve. So they played it safe, while Fischer kept working hard.
At the quarter pole following round 6, Fischer had 5.5 points and a 1.5 point lead on Geller, Gligoric, Larson, Panno, and Ujtumen. But then came a bad stretch: he managed to draw lost positions in round 7 and 8, but Larsen didn't let him off the hook in round 9. By now the lead had vanished, as Geller joined Fischer at the top with 6.5.
That led to the critical round 12 encounter between the leaders, Geller holding a half-point lead and playing the White pieces. Any normal grandmaster, when Geller offered an early draw, would have accepted to get an easy half-point closer to qualification. Fischer, hungry for a win after five rounds without one, refused.
Geller played inaccurately and lost a pawn, reaching a difficult rook ending. Eventually, a hallucination and a final mistake sealed his fate, and Fischer took the lead. The rest was a matter of technique: Fischer won two more in a row, took a couple of draws for a breather, then started his famous streak with full points in his last seven games.

I do hope RU-vid compensates you properly, for you produce excellent videos. Your experience is very beneficial as you understand the game seriously well. But your ability to break down the games is what impresses me the most. Thanks for what you do. I'm still a bad player, but at least I get to enjoy the top notch games, with your help. Salud!

Another reason is because these RU-vid games are usually exciting meaning they are very tactical. Some chess games just go to the endgame or are boring very rarely do you need to sacrifice material. Not every Tal game was a sacrifice where he won.

@bezzlebedeviled4756 5 лет назад
8:55 -- While he remains ahead here, Fischer's queen-harassing Rb1 is suboptimal to Rc7 and going straight for the kill as described following Rb1, Qxa2. The black queen is as unable to come to the defense of the bishop from b2 as it is from a2 because b4 is covered by the white knight. Rb1 and Qxa2 were both canceling-out blunders. Following Rb1, black's best move was e4 counter-threatening the white queen, resulting in either an immediate exchange (or one briefly delayed by a knight fork-check), or black's queen eventually on e5 radiating power. The engine accords white almost +5 at this point (35 depth), presumably still winning but less likely than the +10 following Qxa2, but best paths appear to lead to an end game in which white is only up by a minor piece with ability to promote a pawn still dubious.

Nice video, but i wonder what if the black queen at 7:57 captures the pawn and if the white knight gives double check(rook) then the black king can go to f8, seems black gets a pawn in advantage, am i missing something?

Good idea. I will grin at my opponents first move, it may upset his or her concentration, and if not, I have lost nothing.

Agadmator do you have a link to a site where the png file is located. I can't copy paste the moves from the description as I'm on mobile. If you sent a browser link, I could. I wonder if this might be helpful to others who like to analyze these games on lichess on their phones

Try finding the game in chessgames.com or chess365.com. Or simply typing the players name and event + pgn and I'm sure it will come up.

Supernova I ended up using a computer and just copy pasting the description. Thanks though for the future

No problem. Don't forget you can also import the pgn to lichess.org and save it under a study with notes and such. And no, I don't work for them. :)

Supernova yeah I'm aware. I tried doing that at first but then instead just did the analysis cuz I'm not about to do a study on a grandmasters game. Not that much into chess. I'm rated 1750 and I'll probably stay there. Too much time needs to be invested to really get good at this complex game lol

‘Here you remember the final standings of the 1969 US Championship...’ , oh, right, I remember.
