Donkeys are good against all doglike predators, but not against cats such as bobcats and mountain lions. Alpacas are just as good as Donkeys for that and you can see how weary they are with 4 vs 1 tiny bobcat, which seems young and insecure.
Hadn't heard about alpacas, but llamas are known to chase away foxes in the Andes, kicking and spitting at them. Heard that in the US they replace sheepdogs, more practical as they don't need special feed
Family friends of ours had a rooster actually kill an attacking fox. So really good roosters can take their protection duties to the very highest levels! But not all roosters; others just hide from danger.
We have 2 Blue Heeler dogs, they keep the Bobcat, Fox, Coyote, and raccoon, my husband saw on his trail camera on our property, away from our chickens, turkeys, and Guinea Fowl. The dog pen is right next to our bird pens.
@@MyName-zd9pe When we add sheep and a goat to are hobbie farm. We are going to get a Donkey to guard the livestock. Theres videos of Donkeys killing foxes, coyotes and even hyenas. Donkeys are vicious creatures and are insanely strong.
These alpacas are magical creatures right? They’re so smooth and elegant in they’re movements. Course if the fence wasn’t there, they’d be half way to Timbuktu, and the chickens would be cooked. But whatever. They’d fit right into Avatar. 😁
@@rickallman1318 Because the alpacas were scared. They are herd animals and it is in their instinct the run synchronized away from predators, no matter the size of the predator.
In truth, most predators are somewhat afraid. If they get hurt attacking the wrong thing (or the wrong way) they can't hunt and starve to death! So seeing large (to the bobcat, alpacas are large) animals line up in a formation, the bobcat did a Nope!! Not today! Now if one of those chickens get careless, Lunch!!! But I Am NOT going anywhere near those big things.!
Start by installing a more secure perimeter, that fence is too short! Then get something mean to protect the chickens... Those things you got are too cute to be mean 🤣
There a certain cartoon I would watch, I’m 66 that cartoon still cracks me up………… A certain dog and a male chicken are in the yard, this little thing with a big head comes into the yard and yells out loud, I’m a CHICKEN HAWK and I’m HUNGRY!! I WANT A CHICKEN To Eat! So he asks the dog does he know where a chicken is? The dog hates this one fat chicken so he sends the little fella to the chicken he is suppose to be watching! FUNNY as Hell😆 In the end he is so confused with their nonsense he grasps the both of them. Cause he’s a chicken hawk!
That crew should be able to run off lions. Would think bobcat would be gone as soon as dogs showed interest. That said, we had a bobcat come into our little suburban yard - my wife was home and tried to get my dogs to go out, but apparently it was nap time. Even in LGD breeds the instinct can skip a generation (my bigger lap dog is a Pyrenees) - maybe it’s a question of nurture as well as nature :)
Lamas are usually pretty tough animals. They put three or four Lamas in with a group of sheep and they will fight like hell and keep the predators away like wolves, foxes, coyotes and they will even gather up together as a group and fight off even Grizzly bears from what I understand.
@@seaskimmer9071 Some people use Donkeys and Llamas (not Alpacas) to guard their sheep and cattle herds. Llamas are fucking mean bastards. They will kick and bite and spit all over your ass bigtime. You don't want to mess them. They will tear your ass up.
@@seaskimmer9071 - Just because species arose in one place, does not mean that people have not brought them elsewhere. Alpacas and Llamas may have originated in South America and still be most common there - but I’ve seen many in multiple states within the lower 48. Other posters here have mentioned their use as guardians in Europe. Would think their cold tolerance and mountain origins would make them ideal for use in mountainous northern regions - which is also where they’d be most likely to encounter grizzlies. So comment is not so laughable. Personally I like dogs because they bark. You want guardian animals to handle all the small stuff, and make bigger threats reconcpsider (look for easier meals. If big animal is really attacking, dogs may just slow it - but they’ll alert you and buy time for you to get out the big guns.
This is absolutely beautiful video and I thank you so much for sharing it !! I would be TORN in three different ways if this happened to me and mine!!! I can see that's no kitten!! And I love all wildlife & I know they've got to eat but damn!! I feel ya!!
Wow. That cat decided those big animals that he has probably never seen were just a bit much. 4 against 1 nope I think Niall from my chicken elsewhere thank you very much! Wow that was exciting.
The Alpacas should have been alarming like crazy!! Geez, if my Alpacas see ANYthing unusual there's a cacophony of alarms nonstop! ANYthing, meaning a suspicious animal, a sketchy looking tree or weed moving suspiciously, a loud train on the distant train tracks.. heh..
Alpaca are not stupid, let big cat fill up on chickens, then he will be to full to mess with Alps, just don't forget to replace chicken's for round two...because da cat will be back, yum yum !!
