This video shows Little Gasparilla Island and some marinas in Boca Grande after Hurricane Ian came through.
I went down there to help with the cleanup efforts and thought I'd make this video for those who haven't yet been able to check on their belongings or their boat storage facilities.
Here's what you'll see in this video:
- Palm Harbor Marina
- Eldred's Marina
- Little Gasparilla homes (from north canal down to the southern point)
- Gasparilla Marina
- Boca Grande (aka - Millers) Marina
- Whidden's Marina
Our continued thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been impacted by this storm.
Please make sure to donate money and/or time to the organizations who are out helping rescue those in need and for those who are cleaning up debris.
Here are a couple that could surely use some extra support:
- Florida Disaster Fund
- American Red Cross
Please leave a comment below for any other organizations that would be good to donate to.

My sister and brother-in-law are one of the lucky ones. Their house is standing with what they describe as livable damages. However after the electricity came back their septic system is messed up. They have to use neighbors accommodations. They are retired living on LGI they are very grateful and impressed with the volunteers that have come to help restore order.

Our mobile home in St James City is still standing by some miracle. Plan on heading over next weekend to get a tarp up because the NOAA images show roof damage. The trailer was about 8 feet above high tide. From the pictures a neighbor took it doesn’t look like surge got in.

It's really striking how bad some buildings and docks were affected while others look to be in really good shape. Don't scrimp on building materials or upgrading existing properties, don't stretch the building codes or choose builders who have less than a stellar reputation.

The last time I was down there right after a storm there were 1000s of dead mullet and quite a few snook floating dead in the canals. There were a couple other bay species too. I don't know what killed them but it doesn't look like it happened this time. It was brutal, like red tide without the lung irritation. All the loss and destruction is really sad to see, but at least the fish are okay. So far.
@chrissewell1608
@chrissewell1608 Год назад
It could have been all the fresh water, or oil and fuel, that killed the fish?! Or just being beaten to death, during the hurricane?
@comfortablynumb9342
@comfortablynumb9342 Год назад
@@chrissewell1608 I don't know. I remember being surprised by all the dead fish but nobody knew what killed them. I doubt it was fuel because there's got to be more fuel in the water this time. It's a good question and I don't know the answer but I'd like to.

Thanks for the update Luke. Sad to see the damages, but I have to wonder: if this area (and much of Waterfront Florida) had adopted the Monroe (County) Doctrine, I don’t think we’d be looking at losses like this. Unfortunately our politicians have given way to the building lobbies to allow stick (frame) and modular construction. Did you notice a disparity in damages from stick vs CBS construction? Either way, let’s hope loss of life is minimal, and everyone’s boats are have survived. 🙏 ❤
@pakde8002
@pakde8002 Год назад
Hurricane and tornado zones are no place for poor construction menthods. Insurance is just a backup plan. Unfortunately between insurance and vagaries of a tourist based economy a lot of people can't make upgrades or try to cut corners.

Luke...I live in Cape Coral, but got lucky for sure. The area got creamed. Just wondering...did you get to your destination by boat or trailer it to the area? The scuttlebutt has been that the water is dangerously cluttered with debris. Did you find this to be so on your journey?

@@Saltstrong The Gasparilla Lighthouse on Boca Grande, unfortunately, sustained structural damage and will be closed the rest of season 2022 until a restoration can be completed. However we still do not know the status of the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse built in 1890 where I volunteer as a tour guide for the museum. Fingers crossed we will be able to re-open in November!!! Fingers crossed! It appears to have sustained quite a bit of cosmetic damage on the outside- but engineers & Coast Guard will decide if our Lighthouse will be safe to re-open to public! Fingers crossed!.
