The havittha (artificial mound) on the island of Gan in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll presents the ruins of one of the largest Buddhist monuments in the Maldives. Abandoned since the mid-twelfth century when the islands converted to Islam, the structure had been completely overgrown at the center of this long uninhabited island.
In 2024, the Maritime Asia Heritage Survey (MAHS) Maldives Field Team systematically documented the havittha and 11 other archaeological sites from the Buddhist and Early Islamic periods of the island’s history. This video presents the team’s work-in-progress of data capture and digital processing on the GDh. Gan havittha site. The 3D animation and video is edited by Tiago Queiroz at MAHS Digital Heritage Documentation lab, Kyoto University.
The full dataset for the site can be found in the Maritime Asia Heritage Survey database under record: MAHS-MDV-GDH-GAN-S-010
The Maritime Asia Heritage Survey is based at Kyoto University’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies, under the direction of Professor R. Michael Feener. The MAHS has field survey teams working across multiple countries contributing to the ongoing development of an open-access online archive. Our growing dataset of archaeological sites and historical artifacts from the Maldives, Indonesia, and other countries of the region can be accessed at: maritimeasiahe......
