Excessive body filler on the edges of doors, hoods and deck lids can cause cracking in the Body work after a project is completed. In this video we show you how to metal work the edges of body panels to reduce the amount of body filler needed. The closer you get the metal work or metal finishing to perfect the easier the Body Filler stage will be. At Sylvester's Customs we strive to keep up with the latest techniques and products to ensure the best possible outcomes for our customers. We hope you can take something away from this video and apply it to your own process. Continue to Learn and Share what you Know!!

Even though I know this stuff, I still found myself watching these videos. You give a lot of tips and explain things very thoroughly. Also, I wasn’t sure about the shrinking disc, but you’ve made me a true believer. I wish I would have started watching your channel months ago.

I watched the video about alignment and when to put all the parts on at the right time before certain steps. I was an Electrician for 40 years. The only way the building goes up is if you follow the same steps without failure. Its hard for me not try to achieve the 100% when learning about paint and body work. Your videos make think in another way now.. I have 40 years of construction knowledge. From an apprentice to General foreman. I take pride in all skills that I have acquired. I took a polishing class at Chemical Guys 4 years ago. Then I took a painting class at a junior colle in California. I was hooked. I have been to Sema 2 times. I have 3 motorcycle tanks that I have painted numerous times an colors.. From single stage to candy and pearl. I was never taught about using a sealer and the benefits in the long run. I mved to Texas last year. Now I have a 1200 foot shop to do whatever I want. I have 3 acres and have been busy getting everything upgraded. Once the outside is done I get to pant again. Your videos encourage the chosen to follow thr rules and procedures to achieve a better work ethic and distinction form the sheep I think.

Thanks for another very interesting video. I'm working on a low crown roof panel that was sand blasted. It had variable amounts of stretching all over the surface. I'm using the methods shown in your earlier videos eg guide coat, sanding block, body file, shrinking disk and slapper for planishing. I have made slow progress and now I'm trying to get the panel as good as possible. Working in medium sized areas I found that there was a risk that while the local areas might be good the overall shape could be rising slowly either N-S or E-W. To flag this problem I'm using a variety of adjustable commercial profile gauges ( the ones using an array of metal or plastic needles) I use 5inch 10 inch and 19 inch devices. My panel shows good agreement with the two smaller sizes but large errors with the 19 inch gauge. I appreciate that the longer gauge is amplifying small errors and that perfect agreement may be impossible. Incidentally the panel also looks good when I place a 3 foot steel ruler flat across the panel in various directions. Do I quit now or continue to drive myself insane? Thanks, Mike

I am unsure of your question. Just depends on how good you want it to be the more you do the better you get everything takes practice.

Thanks for this very informative video. If you were tig welding a long butt weld seam to join panels in the middle of a body part, not on the edge, would you still want that linear stretch hammer or would a conventional hammer work better? Thank you.
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS 2 года назад
Conventional hammer is what you want. Linear is only to stretch an edge out.

Sometimes you laid your straight edge on the inside of the hood and sometimes the outside. When you check it on the inside, it won't be flat because you have added a .040 strip on the inside.

@@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS I've been working on cars since I was about 12 years old. Painted a '37 Chev with a "bug-a-boo" sprayer and what ever kind of paint the hardware sold. I de-chromed my first car using "liquid soldier". No Bondo until about '55. Bought a book on body work when in my 20's. But through it all I learned nothing until the last few months when I learned about RU-vid. Postings like yours and others I have started rust repairs on my '02 Chev truck. I live in the rust belt. Right now it is --25 F and Bondo doesn't set up at this temperature-- it freezes. Thank you for your postings.

Love the series. I have a tail panel on a Mustang that has a pretty good ding on the passenger side tail light area, But I would like to use the original panel. Would you recommend removing the panel then doing all this to it rather than leave it on the car?
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS

If you can get to the back access then I would leave it on the car if you cannot you might Have to carefully remove it fix it and then weld it back on

Watched all 3 episodes. In the past I've thought about doing this but was overwhelmed. After watching your series, I think I can actually do this now. 1 more thing.....I've seen those that choose the MIG option and they hammer & dolly after every 2-3 stitch welds to compensate shrinking. I guess the theory is to stretch the metal before it cools, or maybe this is how they fight welds cracking. Any thoughts on that?
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS 2 года назад
Regardless any weld is going to shrink. However Mig is a lot harder of a weld which is likely to crack. Tig will not.

@@rongamble9884 You are absolutely correct what we’re really trying to teach is that if you can perfect your body work you should be able to use just about any primer one time and it will be perfect in my opinion using a polyester primer is unnecessary the better we get I’m like you I don’t wanna send anymore than I have to 🤣

Nice job ! But, who is going to pay for 50-60 hours on a hood ? If it's your own its understandable but even cutting the hourly wont cover the labor. I love to metal finish but, in the real world situation it just won't work but, if it's a project of you own you can spend all the time you want. Who wouldn't want the nicest work done where you've put your heart and soul into the whole project. You do fantastic work and I would never downplay anything that takes patients beyond the normal. It's the love of the work and the constant push from inside yourself to want to do better that anyone else. Some times you just have to say where enough is enough. That hood is especially thin and would be a huge challenge no matter what your skill levels are. The key is if you continue to put forth the best possible repair that you can do and challenge yourself every day to do better. Personal goals are great but sticking to it is the difference.
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS 2 года назад
Actually this is a customers vehicle. If you hold yourself to a standard and don’t do anything less than be the best you can be people will absolutely pay for it. If the customer doesn’t understand how much work it is then it’s your job to inform the customer of how much work it is. If you think that people won’t pay it you are wrong. Quality work to a high level comes at a price. Nothing is free so practice till you feel efficient and then always do high level work next thing you know you get a different clientele. Don’t sell yourself short 👍🏻

if the mig welds are that brittle it would seem your using the wrong wire, so many different grades of wire out there that just pulling the stuff off the shelf at your local hardware/welding store is structural steel wire, this stuff is not something you want to be using for doing any kind of body work at any thickness, it is not made to have any give. they actually make autobody wire at different grades.
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS 11 месяцев назад
You are correct there are different grades we’ve tried a few the ones we’ve found to be softer didn’t seem to weld as nice. In my opinion tig is superior regardless.

No corrosion protection for the metal sandwich? Why not weld through primer?
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS 2 года назад
Have you ever TIG welded on weld through primer? It will not weld or penetrate good. Plus the piece is only 1/2” wide The amount of heat whether you Tig or mig weld an entire edge there would be zero weld through primer left it would all burn away especially with plug welds in the middle.
@fj5gtx770
@fj5gtx770 2 года назад
@@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS Haven't figured out making TIG work for me yet, still practicing before I try it on anything I care about. When I plug weld MIG, I don't cover the hole area - just around it. I'm always looking for ways to do better with pinch welds. I've been thinking about using panel bonding adhesive instead of welding those kinds of areas. Would save you straightening, and seal up the metal sandwich. What do you think?
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS 2 года назад
@@fj5gtx770 I cannot bring myself to use Panel bonding. That’s like saying why bolt the car together when you could just glue it together lol If you learn and understand how metal moves like I’m teaching throughout these tutorials you can fix just about any situation
