Pomona, CA --- According to police, on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, Pomona Police officers responded to a 911 call about a man with a gun at the Deluxe Motel, located at 914 West. Holt Ave. A 911 call from a witness reported that gang members were threatening and robbing people at gunpoint at the motel.
Officers arrived and contacted the suspect as he was walking away from the motel.
The suspect, later identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner’s Office as Rolando Esquivel, 40, continued to ignore officers commands, walking southbound on Hamilton Ave. as more units arrived on scene. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, a bean bag shotgun was deployed striking Esquivel. However, it was ineffective. Officers continued giving orders, but Esquivel did not comply and continued holding the gun in his right hand. A second bean bag shotgun round was deployed, this time, striking Esquivel left hand. Esquivel dropped the object and fired a gunshot and this is when the officer-involved shooting occurred. After the shooting, officers rendered medical aid and began an assessment of the suspect’s injuries. However Esquivel was transported to the hospital and succumbed to his injuries.
