Created by acclaimed filmmaker Jerry Fairbanks for the Boeing Co. in the immediate post-WWII era, "Tomorrow's Airplane Today" celebrates the 377 Stratocruiser, the company's new entry into the civilian aviation market. The Boeing 377 Stratocruiser was a large long-range airliner developed from the C-97 Stratofreighter military transport, a derivative of the B-29 Superfortress. The Stratocruiser's first flight was on July 8, 1947. Its design was advanced for its day, its innovative features included two passenger decks and a pressurized cabin, a relatively new feature to transport aircraft. It could carry up to 100 passengers on main deck plus 14 in lower deck lounge; typical seating was for 63 or 84 passengers or 28 berthed and five seated passengers.
The Stratocruiser was larger than the Douglas DC-6 and Lockheed Constellation and cost more to buy and operate. Its reliability was poor, chiefly due to problems with the four 28-cylinder Pratt & Whitney Wasp Major radial engines and their four-blade propellers. Only 55 Model 377s were built for airlines, along with the single prototype.
At the head of the film you will see rare views of the Boeing plant in Seattle as it looked during WWII -- completely covered in camouflage netting and paint. It also shows various Boeing products including the B-29 upon which the Stratocruiser was based.

Flew from London to New York on PanAm clipper "Westward HO" November 1949 as a 6 year old, unaccompanied. Years later came across the passenger manifest, me and 24 other passengers. Only person of note was Lou Harris the pollster. Pilot brought me to the flight deck, stars were large as saucers and the deck was bathed in a soft red light. That started my life long interest in aviation.

The passengers took pride in how they looked. No cutoffs, no shorts up to the crotch, no denims too tight with holes in them, no guys wearing pants down past their butts, they wore shoes, and had manners. And we're making progress?

This was a comfortable and well-designed airplane, but, sadly the "low operating cost" promise proved to be false. The Pratt & Whitney Wasp Major engines were troublesome and the plane proved extremely expensive to operate. It was retired after a fairly short career.

All done with slide rules, pencils and paper. No PC or Mac.

Modern airplanes don't have ashtrays so airlines were able to fit in two extra seats in each row. Sleeping berths? Ha! We now have extreme creature comforts such as reclining the seat back a full 7/8th of an inch!

And it was glamorous. The apex was flying Pan Am. People dressed in their Sunday best to board, ate fine gourmet meals, and enjoyed in flight movies. Now we dress in sweatsuits to avoid wrinkling, packed in like sardines with all sorts of people, especially those who disdain soap and hot water showers, got bags of nuts tossed to us like seals in a circus. I would rather drive my own vehicle and see thr countryside before suffering the TSA body cavity searches and cattle car accommodations.

6 hours coast to coast is not too shabby for a prop job. And no TSA BS to deal with either.

I like the navigator doing his charting and checking the way points. No Garmin GPS or Ipad or Forflight.

Boeing really didn't become a big name in commercial aviation until the jet age, starting with the legendary Boeing 707 in the late 1950's.

"Food like this adds to the pleasure of flight" said no one EVER in 2020.

I had a flight on the USAF version, the C-97, back in 1965 or early 1966. It was flown by an Air National Guard crew from Vietnam to Clark, P.I. The crew was very informal and after takeoff, they removed their AF flight suits and wore bermuda shorts and t-shirts enroute. I rode most of the way in the cockpit, a pretty cool experience. The navigator was the only one busy. No GPS satellites back then. Those big radials and slow turning props were beautiful to listen to. At cruise power, they just hummed along.

Although the film mentioned Pratt and Whitney Wasp Major engines (R4360) the aircraft shown is actually a very Early C97 with Wright R3350 engines (Same as the B29). Its obviously an early sales film before the 'Strat' entered proper service. Interior shots are almost certainly the cabin mock up.

As a small child in the late 50s and early 60s, I lived very near the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport, which is adjacent to Ft. Snelling Air National Guard base. I used to see all manner of amazing military aircraft fly over our house, especially this one. We even had jets breaking the sound barrier over the house on a regular basis back then. Of all the amazing planes I saw as a child, this one stuck in my mind the most. I started building plastic model airplanes at age 3, with Dad's help. When I was in my early 40s I found a model of one of these in Minnesota Air National Guard livery. It sits in my family room now on a high shelf. Each time I look at it I am reminded of my youth, and of the sight of these flying overhead.

As I always say is that I love period documentaries such as this one! Although it served for a relatively short time I remember vaguely seeing one at one airport when I was a child yet it was so big this airplane! I wish I could go back in that period....

I enjoyed this film of the Boeing Stratocruiser. Dad, Glenn Jones, was head of the Boeing Photo Unit from about 1939 to 1978. Although not produced by Boeing, this film contains a lot of footage shot by dad's crews. I'm pretty sure the gentleman on the left at
