A detailed description of the GE9X engine issues delaying the Boeing 777X program. Plus some local Gold Rush history connections with turbine wheel design.
CORRECTIONS:
EPR- "total pressure at the exit of the propelling nozzle DIVIDED by the total pressure at the entry to the compressor". (I said 'difference").
Stator 'VANES' (not blades).

The thermal efficiency of an engine is directly related to the maximum operating temperature of the heated gas running through the engine and doing the work. Specifically, the efficiency is determined by how hot the gas is when it starts doing the work, and how much it has cooled doing the work. The limiting factor is how hot this gas can be. The tolerance of the materials and the extent the material can be cooled limits the max temperature achievable. This is difficult to do in a turbine engine because the turbine blades must be constantly exposed to the hot gas without any easy way to cool them. Ceramic materials and blown cooling air through the inside of the blade itself are attempts to increase the turbine inlet temperature limit.
@aeb1barfo
@aeb1barfo 4 года назад
Cray Research used Flourinert (tm) to do similar cooling of the mount bars for internal cooling of the X MP and Y MP systems. The whole supercomputer was in-cased in Flourinert (tm) in the Cray 2 and proposed for the Cray 3. This material was so inert , you could breathe it with added oxygen, much like the divers in Abyss. If you let the mixture get too warm. it breaks down into very toxic chemicals. 3M could figure out a high temperature version for jet engine cooling. We used it to heat our buildings in winter via a heat exchanger.

As an engineer, I used to give tours at the Bonneville Lock & Dam and the Folsom Historic Powerhouse. From everything have read, while experimenting with the single bucket wheel, al la the Kinght Wheel, Lester Pelton noticed that when directing the water stream at the side of the bucket the wheel sped up. That's because when hitting the bucket the direction of the water is reversed imparting more energy to the wheel. The split wheel was a further development.

It's interesting how technology has moved things ahead in every walk of life. The German Axial Flow engine was a superior design over the Centrifugal Flow engines we used, but they wouldn't hold up as well. Same thing with P-38's using copper tubing that had to be pulled out of the plane and annealed every so many hours. Then along comes aluminum tubing that was halfway trouble free from fatigue and didn't have to be annealed. I have to admit that the thrust the GE9X puts out really surprised me. Back when I was in the Navy(1966/1970) the big engine on the block was a J-79 that produced about 16,000 pounds of thrust in full after burner! Something producing over a hundred thousand pounds of thrust is unbelievable for an old timer like me!..........Another very informative video, Juan. Keep these puppies comin'.(:>)

Juan, the FAA test requirement for engine cycles is 3000 cycles. That is/was start to idle, run to takeoff thrust, back to idle, reverse thrust, idle and shutdown. Rinse and repeat. I recall that it takes about 20-25 minutes per cycle. Probably around 500 cycles, they'll pull the bore-a-scope plugs and inspect. Then every 500 cycles, and a full tear down at 3000 cycles. Peebles Ohio Engine Test is going to be quite busy, so anyone living in the area has probably heard an increase of test engines. One thing about test engines, is that test engines are tested at the maximum out of balance condition, as well as tested @ 10% under rating of thrust as well as 10% over rate. Boeing and GE can run a condensed flight test program, by doubling up on the number of tests run per day, provided they have test personnel and aircraft available.

Thank you for the video Blancolirio, it was informative and educational, my kind of video. I remember when I lived in Albuquerque, NM years ago, going over to the GE plant there, where my Uncle Will worked. He invited me to their open house and to say the least I was seriously impressed. At the time they had just started building the GE 90 intakes, the nacelles and intake stator vanes, which I believe are fixed in place, and all the other parts that make up the outside of the engine. It was amazing to see all of the machinery they use to build these engines and the science behind building them. They have one section where there's a container filled with water which they place stator vanes in to do ultrasonic test to make sure that there isn't any micro fractures in the material, it's all a very exact science. What impressed me the most was walking up to a GE 90 intake they had standing up and looking up at this massive intake that you can fit a 737 fuselage in, folks just can't appreciate the size of these engines until they see them in person. One of the men there that was crating an intake to send out to GE's final assembly plant, where the inner part of the engine is made,which is in some other state, told us back then that the engine was said to put out over 130,000 Lbs. of thrust or maybe what he meant was that GE's final objective was to reach that goal with the design. Or maybe the lower thrust levels they've been running them at, are a derated setting, I don't know, but they are absolutely amazing engines and they make one of the coolest sounds in jet engine history. Thank you for the quality videos and God bless you.

I sincerely hope you stay in Nevada City (or the area for about a week. My suggestions, if it's o.k. for me to be so bold: visit the Empire Mine State Park, in Grass Valley. Also Malakoff Diggins State Park. Then North San Juan and Downieville. Up from Downieville is Sierra City and the Sierra Buttes. The Buttes are best seen from the interior. I like Sardine Lake Lodge and the lookout tower. After that, continue on Hwy 49, then turn right to Sierraville. There's a hot spring there. Juan showed it on a video once. Continue South to Truckee. You'll be a short trip from Lake Tahoe, if you haven't already seen it. Or, turn right onto I-80 at Truckee, wait, no, better to drive along Donner Lake and drive up Donner Pass Hwy., stopping for photo's along the way. You can intersect with I-80 after Soda Springs. From there, you would exit I-80 at Hwy. 20, which will take you back to Nevada City. If you want a gold nugget, you should be able to buy one somewhere between North San Juan and Downieville. Maybe find a miner at the river, or maybe there will be a rock shop along the way.

In the mid 70s we (CWRU material science class) had an engineer from GE show us their sintered ceramic compressor blades. Tap them and it sounded like vitreous china, but you could hit with a hammer and torch it with oxy propane and the quench it in water and it wouldn't break.
