Boeing's Starliner capsule launched successfully on its first crewed mission, CFT-1, carrying Barry "Butch" Wilmore and Sunita "Suni" Williams. Flying on top of a ULA Atlas V rocket, the capsule lifted off at 10:52am Eastern time from SLC-41 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Starliner is expected to dock with the ISS in the coming days and then reenter to complete its test flight.

Kind of sad that SRBs are an increasingly rare sight in spaceflight. At least the future looks just as exciting.

Hydrogen and methane is just better in the end SRBs are really dirty and not reusable (I know this rocket is also one time use)

Vulcan Centaur, Ariane 6, Indian (GSLV) launch vehicles, Chinese (Kuaizhou) launch vehicles, Japanese (Epsilon) launch vehicles. All of those use SRBs.

It's interesting that the boosrers weren't immediately jettisoned after they burned out. I've never seen that before.

They need to be held for a bit due to the aerodynamics. It's very normal for Atlas V when flying trajectories that are somewhat flatter

Imagine if the fate of the American launch industry depended solely on Boeing......... We would've seen this dismal delayed compromise on 2031, if that, never to be seen again

Question, not that is certified for it, but could Falcon or Falcon Heavy launch Starliner?

What a waste of a rocket and mating collar. A new capsule on a last flight rocket. Too many one of ones creating lost time and resources. Just think starlinner won't fly again until a new rocket is certified

Couldn't they use Falcon 9 to launch Starliner🤔
@paamodt7170
@paamodt7170 4 месяца назад
Politics as I know it. ULA and Blue Orgin are rivals to SpaceX. Boeing and Dreamchaser should want to launch regardless. Instead of waiting for a rocket to be proven
@LittleDuckAlex
@LittleDuckAlex 4 месяца назад
@@Subatomic_Vulcaneven if they could it kind of goes against the whole reason for it existing in the first place. If NASA wants two companies to have capsules as redundancy, using one of those companies to launch means you might as well only be using dragon

Odd that Atlas V still require rolling to zero out azimuth. Soviet/Russian rockets simply rotate the launch tower to match the correct azimuth. Falcon 9 does the calculation internally.

Falcon 9 rolls too during flight
@Delta-V-Heavy
@Delta-V-Heavy 3 месяца назад
The current version of Soyuz does roll to achieve the proper alignment. The rotating launch infrastructure was required because older versions of Soyuz lacked the onboard computer guidance capability to do so. The roll program is a normal thing for rockets to do, and is not at all old fashioned or antiquated.

There's no "access to Starlink". None of the feeds you see from a SpaceX Dragon mission have ever been carried over Starlink.

@Apis_Trader

@@ale131296 also they are offering starlink to customers with boats and planes and automobiles. Because they have a start link package for people who travel. So I'm sure that NASA can have access to start link. Even if SpaceX didn't use starlink with the dragon capsules the image quality is way better than what NASA just showed us on this flight
