The fourth and final flight of the Boeing X-51A Waverider test program has accomplished a breakthrough in the development of flight reaching Mach 5.1 over the Pacific Ocean May 1. The WaveRider unmanned hypersonic vehicle traveled more than 230 nautical miles in just over six minutes over the Point Mugu Naval Air Warfare Center Sea Range, Calif.

People don't realize the main rocket is to get it to 1st level velocity then seperates. The speed at which the scram jet phase kicks in is going way too fast to be captured on video.

First off, that wasn't the only recording, just the one they allowed to be released. Secondly, the problem about seeing the scramjet working is that to get that footage you would need to be on a vehicle that could keep up with the scramjet, and they retired both the SR-71 and the Space Shuttle.
@DeanWebbMarineGaming23144
@DeanWebbMarineGaming23144 2 года назад
Even a SR-71 couldn't go as fast as a scramjet, SR-71 did Mach 3.3 max, which is impressive definitely for how old the J58 Engine Architecture is, the Scramjet goes Mach 5+, even better ones go Mach 8+
@nerd1000ify
@nerd1000ify 11 лет назад
I think the actual scramjet bit is a plane in that it uses lift to fly, though its not shaped like a normal plane due to the high speeds involved. they just use the rocket to get it going fast enough for the scramjet to work, then the booster detaches. Unfortunately we don't get to see the actual scramjet part in action.

What else do you think it is for? There is no way an aircraft could be built using these engines that could carry enough passengers to be cost effective. Such an aircraft would make the Concorde look like the Prius of the air. Mag-Lev tubes would serve the purpose for very fast passenger travel, and generate far less pollution than jet planes at the same time. However, it would not be quite so profitable, so we probably won't be seeing that on a large scale any time soon in the current global economic structure.

I am pretty sure the HACM has many design elements in common with the X-51. Why they have not done a hypersonic boost glide vehicle on top of something like an SM-3 missle is beyond me 😎👍

I wonder why we didn't pursue this experimental missile back in 2012, and continue to develop it. Now we would already have an operational hypersonic missile for our lumbering B-52 bombers. Anyway, Pentagon currently has, believe it or not, 7 different hypersonic missile development programs, from the scramjet cruise missile type all the way to the boost glide type of hypersonic vehicle. Also all of the services have their own programs, from Navy to Army to USAF. They will all probably use the same warhead developed by the Sandia national laboratories.Our military will be a much deadlier force in mid 2020s, with capability to attack any target on the face of the Earth with short to no notice, and with missiles that current technology can't knock out of the sky, even with any future prospect anti missile systems.

Air defense systems can deal with hypersonic threats, in the terminal phase. There are entire systems built solely for that purpose (THAAD, SM-6). The idea they can’t is false. BGVs can fly weird depressed flight paths to make interception harder than normal RVs, but existing sensors can track them and existing interceptors have the kinematics to intercept them. BGVs and HCMs can evade midcourse interception very very well though. That’s their big strength.

rocket engines are extremely inefficient, as they have to carry all the oxidizer with them. the scram-jet does not. As a result there are potential applications in single stage to orbit spaceflight, which is why NASA is interested, and in long range missiles, which is (probably) why the project is so well funded.

You are an absolute tin-foil twit, do some research and you might not look so stupid: (5 second google search). The vehicle dropped and fired is the waverider unmanned vehicle, and the plane filming it was not going mach 5 as you can see the craft fly off into the distance. I apologize if you are only 10 years old, but you will not do well at school (or life) if you cannot think for yourself. This is the very reason why the earth is littered with hippies and religion.

The main engine cannot function at lower mach numbers. It has to actually use a rocket to go fast enough to even get up to functional speeds that the engine will work. This aircraft that was watching clearly didn't accelerate even if it did it wouldn't keep up because the limiting factors of planes that have humans is the human bodies ability to withstand g forces. On an unnamed device there is no reason to limit the acceleration to safe levels for a human they only care about safe levels for the components. This device has small wings because when you're going that fast you want to be inside the cone from the noses slip stream. As mach number increases the angle of the cone decreases. Because the plane is reaching such high speeds it doesn't need or want a bigger wing due to drag forces, and because the lift forces are a function based on the speed the plane is going. IE even if the wing is smaller if you go fast enough it will scale up the total force the wing experiences. We refer to this as the Coefficent of lift of the wing. The lifting force is based not only inn the Coefficent of the lift of the wing but also the speed at which the wing is currently under.
