Boerboel Academy: Size matters

I am very concerned about the 'super sizing' of the Boerboel. It became fashionable to have gaint Boerboels. The Boerboel is not supposed to be a gaint dog and its breed standard does not allow the dogs to be the weights I currently see. Nature developed the frame of the Boerboel over 100s of years and now we have a generation of dogs which weighs far in excess than what their frames can carry. Have you seen the sudden proliferation of sway backs (hollow backs) in Boerboels who are winning shows? Yes..... it is because their spines can't carry their weight. Have you noticed the sudden appearance of collapsed pasterns and east-west paws? They are also the results of excessive weight. Owners are 'feeding their dogs big' to meet the popular trend by putting them on totally inappropriate diets, protein supplements and hormone boosters. The lifespan and the long term health of the dogs are directly affected and nobody is doing anything to try to stop the trend.

I cant even begin to describe how excited i get when I see a new video from you. You are the only person publishing this information but it does not mean you are the only person sharing these opinions. We are with you, Oom. Some of us were lucky enough to own Boerboels in the 80's and even before. The first time a friend of mine brought his "boerboel" to our house my father asked ; "is this a boerboel or a cow? The boerboel is supposed to look after the cow not be a cow"

Thank you my friend. Your father is a wise and observant man. My father, who is now 88, called the new Boerboels 'caricatures'.

Thank you oum... People always say my Boerboel is small for the breed... However he can run faster work harder and more energetic then most Boerboels... They say the head is big but not massive... And I always look at your videos and I'm happy with my dog.. he is perfect.

Thank you Johan. As we all know, you are one of the very few people who are still trying to save the Boerboel from the hands of money hungry breeders. I saw a comment on a Boerboel group, made by a person who failed at breeding Boerboels. He started his own 'designer' breed. He said you are promoting your own opinions, not facts. Now one thing I can assure everyone. Johan gives you facts. He is not a dreamer (apart from dreaming to save the Boerboels), he is a very factual person. The extent of his research into this breed is ABSOLUTELY mind boggling. Good luck with the new book. I cannot wait to read it.

Well said. Only came across these vids now…grew up with Boerboels, like 90% of kids growing up on a farm in SA😎…but it is not a “preferred” breed for me anymore. Impressive ?…yes…but size is not the only characteristic that got “diluted”….temperament (in my opinion) got lost with it. I’ve bred pitties for more than 20 years, but moved to the Dogo Argentino a couple of years ago. What is interesting about these talks, is the reality that we are seeing the same tendancy in more breeds than just the Boerboel.

I agree breeders are breeding for bigger size which is going to lead to a lot of heath issues just to much weight for hips and elbows.

I can tell you one thing. This guy is very respected by SA Boerboel breeders who lnow the history of the dog. Ones that I've spoken to anyway. They say his information is good as he was there when the breed standard was getting sorted.

I ask that, if you can at all help it.. please do not stop making videos. We need you in the Boerboel world. There is no breed like a Boerboel, and I love mine as much or more than I do myself. One of the worst things I feel could have happened was for Oblio to be introduced in the westminster dog show. I live near his kennel, but I do not see in their Boerboels what I see in mine, especially in temperament. In show 146 I believe it was, I saw a Dogo in it for the first time also. Killing the breed is the best way you can describe it, and it angers me to see because it is inevitable. The work you are doing is needed.

Thnx for the great info! Thou my boerboel is slightly above that 66cm, it has a perfect symmetry at the age of 1,5years. 68 head, 68 height and 68 weight :)

Most boerboels I have seen arent that tall but they ar3 also not in the balance you speak about. Around 60-70cm at the withers is where most fit in but the weights is something else, you don't hear of a boerboel under 80kg. From what I have seen many are very wide and a new thing I'm seeing is "short" legs and long body, height is within the 60-70cm but body looks to be a whole metre long from chest to butt

Can you use your dogs to demonstrate some of the things you are talking about? Like the gait... I have 2 boerboels maybe you could tell me what you think of them. One of them I'm sure he is from registered parent nd grandparents. And I use him with my greyhounds for various activities nd chasing a lure also.

Hi unfortunately the current SABBS breed standard gives higher scores to dogs with legs like tree trunks , etc .

Hi Michael, it is not the breed standard that gives the higher scores, it is appraisers / evaluators that do not know the breed standard well enough to connect the dots. The lack of any form of quality control mechanism makes this just a normal practice with no consequences if you apply your own interpretation of the breed standard.

Hi Johan I am Bulgarian married to a South African and lived 15 years in Cape Town then moved yo the UK but now all family moved back to my home country Bulgaria. Our kids are at an age where they want a 🐕 and because we know the boerboel breed, my wife and I where looking for a dog here but cannot find....😕 is there a way to purchase a dog from you?
