MeatEater Podcast Ep. 243 Boggeying in the Brushworlds is live. In this clip, Steve Rinella talks with Michael Tewes, Neal Wilkins, Ryan Callaghan, and Janis Putelis. They discuss: the ocelot as an animal that’s unknown to most folks; how it hurts like hell to get bitten by a cat; chicken-ocelot bonding; the ocelot population in the US being less than 100 individuals; how mammalogists have more fun than ornithologists; a mad obsession with cats; reproduction and the minimum birth rate to maintain a population; the effect of declines in genetic variation.
They also discuss all the different ways of losing an ocelot; how conservation is dependent on private landowners; maintaining the ocelot population on the East Foundation’s Texas ranch holdings; is the ESA antiquated what it means to be pro-ESA reform; sex, hunger, and fear; the insane number of birds killed by feral and domestic cats; a hope that ocelots will stick around; how to incentivize conservation when you can’t ever go to the place in need of conserving; and more. Listen to the full episode here, bit.ly/3lgENQp or wherever you get your podcasts.

I'm from the black swamp area in northwest Ohio, there used to be a bird called the Carolina Parakeet that was a native parrot species that nested in the tall trees of the black swamp. The black swamp was close to the Everglades in size, and was mentioned as being nearly impassable.. the terrain let alone, the malaria... native peoples believed it was sacred. These birds were beautiful, they were said to have flocked to the area in droves.. they were killed in the early days for hats. Killed until there were no more to be killed.. kaput. I have a theory about Ohio. Folks that live here mention it's dead skys. Its always intrigued me, why this is perpetuated. Well I starting looking into it. Ohio had a rich diverse ecosystem.. theres a reason it's called the heart of it all. Ohio has been basically stripped through mining, and the lands almost indefinitely reworked across the entire state.. its forests decimated for timber, is resources readily available just under the surface because of the deposits from Appalachian runoff, and glacial formation. Ohio was basically murdered by the time the last buffalo was killed in 1801 I believe, wasn't long after the last elk was killed in western Ohio. Bear, deer, elk, fox, wolf, mountain lion, etc .list really does go on. Gone! Ohio had incredible aquatic life to many species gone.. but seriously take a minute one day and look into the diversity on the smaller size scale of fish species here that would rival many aquarium fish in pet stores from exotic places. When the national forestry service and other groups band together they started programs to bring it back .. I absolutely love learning about the way it was. These kind of podcasts resonate in my soul. May sound like I'm just in love with my state, I mean I do love it.. but I love its history. This podcasts really got me thinking about my home Michigan to. Spent my first 20 years 2 weeks a year on the ausable of m72 we camped up in huron, and fly fished, love learning about the Mason tract, and George mason the race car driver adventurer.. I was born in the wrong time..

Population viability analysis is a species-specific method of risk assessment frequently used in conservation biology. It is traditionally defined as the process that determines the probability that a population will go extinct within a given number of years. Wikipedia

We're covered up with them here in the Southeast wherever you find vast stands of oaks and mixed hardwoods. Big, goofy lookin' bastards. Pileated Woodpeckers, not Bigfoots (Bigfeet?). Hope I never see a Bigfoot. I was talking to a guy about Bigfoot the other day. He said the whole subject is BS. I said that more people have seen Bigfoot than have seen Jesus, and everybody around here believes in Jesus. He changed the subject.
