Hi - I just got one of these and love it. Quick question - I don't hear anything on any of the channels until the volume is at 08:30 hrs - is that normal ? Thanks
Hello, in case you're satisfied with the sound, everything is o.k. But my experience is to NEVER install any Sovtek preamp tubes in a vintage-type amplifier. I use a 100B myself and it sounds much more vivid and not that "flat" (difficult to describe sound in text... ) as your amp sounds to me in this video. So, if you're interested in different sounds and don't need worry about the money: try some different preamp-tubes. Especially V1 for the overall sound and V6 for the clean channel can make a huge difference.
Thanks for the wisdom, but this wasn't my personal amp. I run an electronic repair business in central OH and have been doing repairs for 20+ yrs. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Sovtek tubes. I go through roughly 1000 new production tubes each year and had less than a 1% failure rate with fantastic sonic results. Conversely, the failure rate with vintage or so-called "NOS" tubes are typically around 25%. Old production tubes may be fine if you're an end user who retubes an amp or two per year and can spend the time swapping half a dozen different preamp tubes in V1 position. But when you are servicing a more substantial number of amps in the hundreds each year or manufacturing at similar numbers using old production NOS tubes would be completely unsustainable.
