Big companies have purchased carbon offsets that promise to save forests under threat. But in many cases they’re not under threat, so nothing is being saved. In this segment from Getting Warmer, Kal Penn takes a skeptical look at the effectiveness of these programs in reducing emissions. Can the carbon credits market clean up its act?
---
Getting Warmer is Bloomberg's exclusive new show about climate, clean energy and business, anchored by actor and former White House aide Kal Penn.
Accompany him on his journey as he takes an up-close look at bold climate solutions and discovers new facets of the global transition to clean energy.
In a hosted studio segment, Penn sifts through the overwhelming news about our climate and breaks down the facts and trends to understand with a dose of humor and optimism. Why are the recycling symbols on your plastic cups misleading? How does the carbon credit market work and does it actually help? And what is the future of water in a drought-ridden world?
On the road, Penn meets the innovators, researchers, communities and businesses pivoting to new energy sources and spearheading low-carbon technologies. In documentary segments, Penn speaks to the self-declared “crypto cowboys” of Texas who claim Bitcoin mining can help stabilize the state’s troubled electrical grid, and travels to Nevada to visit the company attempting to build America’s first closed-loop supply chain for electric vehicles. In New York, Penn explores the urban designs proposed to save the city from the next Superstorm Sandy and goes inside New York’s Empire State building to investigate the challenges of decarbonizing our cities and landmarks.
The show builds on, and includes contributions from, Bloomberg Green’s award-winning team of climate journalists as well as London-based climate storytellers Jack Harries and Alice Aedy. With a focus on the most pressing questions for young viewers, Jack and Alice unpack one big idea each episode. From recycled wastewater to regenerative agriculture and the challenges of a just transition for workers in the energy sector, they’ll break down how countries across the world are finding intriguing solutions to our climate crisis, and outline the challenges ahead.
Watch Getting Warmer starting February 1st at 8p EST streaming on Bloomberg channels on Connected TV Devices including Samsung TV+, LG Channels, and Fire TV. And on & Bloomberg.com.
You can also watch on Bloomberg TV (BTV) at 10p ET.

Do we hear about any company paying for carbon credits to preserve the Amazon forest?

Those three SUVs parked outside of the carbon capture facility produce more carbon in a year driving to and from the facility than does that facility take carbon out of the atmosphere.

some of this is wrong. "Carbon offsets have no benefit if wind power is already cheaper than fossil fuels". yeah they do. the difference between a 5% ROI and a 20% ROI is that the project actually gets done
@nicolaslemay
@nicolaslemay 6 месяцев назад
But what if the project is already 20% ROI? The problem with those offsets, is that it is very difficult to know if it really made a difference or not, and currently a lot of wind and solar projects are profitable on their own. Sure thing, it can vary from project to project, but the accountability of all of this is very difficult and the risk of bogus offsets is high.

"In any system of energy, Control is what consumes energy the most. Time taken in stocking energy to build an energy system, adding to it the time taken in building the system will always be longer than the entire useful lifetime of the system. No energy store holds enough energy to extract an amount of energy equal to the total energy it stores. No system of energy can deliver sum useful energy in excess of the total energy put into constructing it. This universal truth applies to all systems. Energy, like time, flows from past to future".

"No system of energy can deliver sum useful energy in excess of the total energy put into constructing it." Just overwhelmingly utterly false. Stop having strong opinions please. I think you are thinking of the conservation of energy which says nothing can produce more energy than what is put into it.... which of course is very VERY different to it can never produce more energy than it took to build it. If what you said were true, that would mean no energy business could ever possibly make a profit... which is dumb.

@@Ddub1083 What humans have lived, under our outgoing Western Civilisation, is actually the best of a Communism-disguised-Capitalism system - owing to fossil fuels being traded under what's called 'supply and demand', not on the basis they are finite. "no business could ever possibly make a profit enough to repair itself from wear and tear and caseation" - which sounds dumb to us - but true, and humans cannot prevent it, being a law of nature.

How hard is it to plant seeds by the thousands a day as to offset the carbon instead of pretending to protect trees that were never in danger lol
@nicolaslemay
@nicolaslemay 6 месяцев назад
Very hard. You need to find lands, you need to make sure those trees will survive, you need to make sure they won't be cut down in 30 years for now, you need to replant it is there a forest fire. They came with a lot of co benefits taught, but thinking we can just plant trees easily is wrong.

How? It would be a scam if states, properties could not protect (the already protected forests) with the money they are getting selling credits. Think of a scenario where a another corporate comes out of nowhere and offers a million bucks to cut a portion of the forest (after passing EIAs) now a state that is earning credits will have the least motivation to do so. I think carbon credits being paid to existing protected forests are important. It's just on a first come, first serve basis. Don't think we should cry about it. The way to mitigate or minimise any abuse of this is gvt control- Cap and trade; also passing laws to make it compulsory for companies to have a minimum percentage of "additionality" when they calculate carbon offsetting.
