The spectacular views from Sydney’s Lavender Bay have inspired generations of artists who have celebrated its great beauty. In the 1970s and early 80s the waterfront enclave became a bayside bohemia and home to some of Sydney’s most recognisable and celebrated artists, including Brett Whiteley and Peter Kingston, along with their neighbours and friends Tom Carment, Philip Cox, Joel Elenberg, Robert Jacks, Rollin Schlicht, Martin Sharp, Garry Shead and Tim Storrier.
Film produced for ‘Bohemian Harbour: Artists of Lavender Bay’, on display at the Museum of Sydney from 1 September-25 November 2018.

What a beautifully put together insight into the lives of artists living at Lavender Bay - both inspiring and poignant with music that carried the passion of the times - brilliant memories caught forever!

A very interesting doco - particularly for those of us older folk with an interest in the past. As a little footnote I would like to add that a very good school friend of mine, who I haven't seen for something like 30 years, used to be Brett Whiteley's dealer for a time. In 1978 I remember driving him from his place in the Eastern Suburbs over to the Travelodge Hotel in North Sydney to give the Whiteley's some H. The two of them had booked into the hotel hoping to come down off their habits 'cold turkey', but conceded defeat and called on my friend to bring them some shit in haste. They'd left the door of their room unlocked and when we walked in there they were huddling in the bed with blankets drawn up to their chins both looking horribly drawn and frazzled. A few minutes and a shot or two later the pair had come to life and were most animated as we dropped them off just near their Lavender Bay home, a truly wonderful place I visited briefly on another trip north side with my friend to deliver Brett some goods. They were strange times indeed. Brett, who I only met on a few occasions, was preternaturally gifted as an artist, but sadly also a genuine fiend with the hammer (and the booze as well I heard). I knew a few. Wendy, on the other hand, seems truly wise having lived to the full, survived and thrived. God, or whatever it is that animates us all has surely blessed her. Cheers

How I wish I had the talent to paint, I often wonder if Artists realise the gift that has been given, for no matter how much effort some put in, they will never achieve anything.
