Bojack cared so little for Todd that even when the crew was listing his crimes on the whiteboard in S6, he still didn't remember sabotaging the rock opera. Todd had to write it himself.

Bojack is exactly the reason why abuse doesn’t make you strong. So many characters come out of abusive childhoods and are stronger for it, which don’t get me wrong is amazing and a lot people do come out strong, but some people just grow up hurt and mentally unstable. It’s refreshing to see a character be negatively effected by the abuse in their childhoods and not become some world saving hero. It feels oddly realistic
@astromoonie
@astromoonie 10 месяцев назад
Right. There's also a considerable focus from the narrative and characters inside the narrative about Bojack's personal accountability, which I like very much. Because at some point, at least in adulthood, no matter where you have come from or what happened to you, you are accountable for who you are. You choose every single day the actions that you take and exactly the sort of person you are going to be. What separates an abuse victim that goes on to break generational curses and patterns from an abuse victim who goes on to perpetuate them is many factors, but most especially personal choice. Bojack continually made the wrong choice.

Dude the worst part is when you do grow up strong, but you're unable to fully detatch from the abuse so you CONSTANTLY have to be strong... and then start relating to season 1 bojack, but from an outsider/functional alcohol way. I am strong, but at a certain point I've started questioning whether or not I even want to be strong-because I'm still as equally mentally unwell as I've ever been "strong." I just mask it because there's never been another choice.

0:16 A lot of people defend Bojack for Sarah Lynn because they elect to blame her mother for exploiting her and her stepfather for assaulting her. And yeah, they deserve plenty of blame, but we can't ignore this. Bojack knowingly and consciously contributed to Sarah Lynn thinking that her toxic childhood was okay. That she was obligated to give everything to everyone no matter how she felt about it. If he hadn't done this, she might have spoken up about her stepfather's abuse and gotten help. He contributed to her downfall more than people like to admit

Worst things Bojack did each season Season 1: Try to sabotage Diane and PB’s wedding Season 2: Try to have sex with Penny after failing to get with her mother, while trying to convince her to leave her family. Sad truth is people only really change when the cost of staying the same is worse than the cost of changing. Bojack is miserable because of his poor actions and trauma, but because he’s self-loathing he can tell himself that he’s actually a good person “deep down” because an actually terrible person wouldn’t feel any remorse for their actions, right? So he can continue being terrible while punishing himself enough to feel ok with his bad habits, not facing major consequences because at the end of the day he’s still a rich, famous male celebrity.

But think of what was at stake. Not only Diane's own career, but also that penguin guy's (I forget the name) publishing company. Bojack had been putting off the book for months before Diane was even hired. She finally got around to it and even made him sympathetic and a character people could relate to and he was pissy because it didn't paint him in the great light he wanted it to. They had deadlines to meet, the world doesn't stop just because Bojack wants it to. Diane writing that book boosted Bojack's career too. And he occasionally does the right thing just to make sure our hopes are still kept up, only to fail when it actually counts. He's genuinely heroic (if still destructive and a jerk) in Fish out of Water, risking death multiple times to save that baby seahorse, but that just makes every time he fails to show basic humanity sting all the more. We know that he's not just capable of clearing the "not a total asshole" bar, but massively exceeding it.

It's rare you get to see a character that is both so awful, and yet in a big-picture sort of way, so tragic. We viewers are shown exactly why and how Bojack is the way he is, while he struggles and fights to realize what we already know.

I do like how the show portrayed him because sometime people can’t be redeemed. Bojack is so wrapped up in his own trauma and being a victim. He can’t own up to his mistakes. He may say sorry and that it was wrong but it doesn’t mean anything when he keeps repeating them.

Relating to a character or even liking a character is not the same as saying a character is a good person or that they would do the same bad things a character did. A lot people like Darth Vader that doesn’t mean they’re gonna blow up planets and cut off limbs. And if they do terrible things like that then they have deeper problems then relating to a fictional character

How can some people say Diane and Bojack were alike (self-destructive)? Not at all. Diane was an empath, Bojack is a narcissist, a trauma-child who hurts people around him because he hasn't acknowledged how deep inside he was damaged by his past and parents. All seasons go through the different aspects of his destructive behaviour. Diane is not like that, she cares too much but that caring is not reciprocal (her marriage to Peanut Butter is not reciprocal, nor her friendship to Bojack; but her friendship to PrincessCarolyn and Todd is, that's why she "keeps" those friends). Diane DOES the hard work, she goes to therapy and insists on it, sees the relevance and urgency of it to "get better" and "turn herself around". Bojack, on the other hand, dismisses that MANY times, unlike Diane; because Bojack needs a different type of personal work and self-reflection, amends, alone-time. Bojack has flashes of clarity right after almost every self-destructive behavior (He helps PC, he tells Diane she shouldn't have him close to her, he feels bad about sleeping with Todd's close/crush friend, he tells Sarah Lynn she's worthy BUT he does it while having her for himself, pushing her to drink and go through a downhole again, takes advantage of her "family-like" relationship and doesn't even ask for what she's doing at the moment -she WINS an OSCAR, but he didn't care, that's why he didn't know and didn't ask for it-. Bojack consistent destructive behavior is what separates him from all other characters, the end reflects that: he doesn't lose his friends because of them, but because of HIM. Todd says it in season 3 too. It is HIM and it is HIM who needs to change himself, turn himself around; no one else has the task or duty "to change Bojack". Remember, how many psychologists does it take to change a light-bulb? "It doesn't matter how many, but the bulb has to want to change".

Yes she was shitty to him, and it may be understandable why he did it. But that doesn't make it an okay action. This woman had dementia in the end and getting revenge on her like that is just shitty. Honestly, it would be very interesting to see a video of the nice things that Bojack did. For example the fake letter for Diane in season 1. Bringing Sarah Lynn to rehab. Taking care of Hollyhook, the seahorse and Penny at the prom. Getting Moode close to Todd. Spurred on Gina to her passion for singing. Invented a fake happy scenario for his wicked mother. and much more. It is blind to think that Bojack has not done bad things, but it is important to see that he is doing his best despite everything. He never had any bad intentions and I am convinced that when he scared Sarah Lynn by saying "don't stop dancing" he wanted to give her some advice in good faith, what his mother taught him
@Schoobyy
@Schoobyy Год назад
1. He tried to do the thing with Penny (A teenage girl) and put her friend in alcoholic coma. 2. He killed Sarah Lynn afterwards. 3. He right then after getting Moodle close to Todd, sabotaged him. 4. He tried to strangle Gina to death. 5. His mother was abusive and told him that if he didn't act on the theater, she wouldn't love him. Just like his mom, Bojack repeated the same abusive behavior with Sarah Lynn. As of to Hollyhock, he finally did something good and for once was not a narcissistic manchild with serious abandonment issues.

Sadly, there's a counterpoint to all of these. He brought Sarah Lynn to rehab, but then caused her relapse and ultimately her demise. He was kind to Hollyhock, but didn't even notice his mom was "poisoning" her with amphetamines. Hollyhock visited him from college, but he spent the whole visit trying to buy drugs, and got Hollyhock in a dangerous situation. Penny at the prom ended with Bojack almost having sex with her. He also gave her best friend alcohol poisoning and just drove off, not taking responsibility. He didn't even ask how Maddy was afterwards. He strangled Gina, which traumatized Gina and caused issues for her career. She lost a big role for being a "diva" on set, when in fact she was reacting to the trauma of being strangled.
