I saw this song on Facebook, and love everything about it. Went over the comments here also, what I can say is that South Africa is full of beautiful people. The past tried to divide us but it failed. We are full of ubuntu and shall cohabitate in this beautiful land.

And the bartender when he got to know his origin, refused to accept payment for his beers. Because of the scandinavian volunteer corps. Huge respect to you and your peoples!
Few months late but there is one video where I found the song with English subtitles if it'll help. I mainly rediscovered this when working on a history essay about a historical figure that changed South africa (technically Kitchener is one of those) and oooh boi! Was a lot of family members not pleased about that one. It was a very controversial topic. Plus i wanted to be different, I'm not pleased with him though. (I also found out one of the great great grandmother's survived the concentration camps there so...yep.)

My great,great uncle fought in the second Boer war. Coming from a Scottish traveller family we don't have much documentation sadly. But as the agricultural work dried up in the fields over here ,men replaced by machines,we settled down. Now I'm 45,a military historian and even I can find out little about him. The Boer was a natural soldier,a skilled outdoorsman too.

I wanted to visit France where my predecessors lived in a village named Bligny, large wine growing grape land as in Champagne and more..my surname is Blignaut (62 years young) and I would have also have loved to visit the UK and the USA. Beautiful, emotive song. I'm only half Afrikaans and hardly speak the language anymore and live in the cold, grey land of the English now, but this song brought me close to tears. I recall the tales my father would tell me of his grandparents' and great grandparents' experience in the Boer War. Apparently his great grandmother hit the English colonel who came to commandeer her dairy and he packed her and the children and the black workers off to a concentration camp the next day. So the story goes.
