These are some of the most basic things you learn in design school, but it's also the stuff I see people gloss over and ignore because of it being so basic. Don't ignore the core principles of design. Study, test, implement, and experiment with them until they're second nature. The "boring" stuff that nobody will notice is what will make the biggest difference. Contrast, white space, margins, etc.
