Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons and events of History in Hindi. In this edition of Tarikh, Sonal talks about Bombay Talkies, a pioneering Indian film studio, established in 1934 by Himanshu Rai and his wife, Devika Rani, in Malad, Bombay (now Mumbai). It became one of the most influential film production houses of its time, producing iconic films that reflected contemporary social issues and artistic excellence. The studio played a significant role in shaping Indian cinema during the pre-independence era, launching stars like Ashok Kumar.
Himanshu Rai was the driving force behind the studio’s artistic vision, while Devika Rani, a talented actress and filmmaker, became known as the "First Lady of Indian Cinema." Together, they produced notable films like Achhut Kanya (1936), which tackled caste issues, and Jeevan Naiya (1936), among others.
Bombay Talkies enjoyed success in the 1930s and early 1940s but began to decline after Himanshu Rai's death in 1940. Internal disputes and financial difficulties led to its eventual closure in 1954. However, its legacy continues to influence Indian cinema, having laid the foundation for modern Bollywood.
