Actually we can separate Indian states with respect to Hindi context into 1) Pure hindi speaking states are delhi, UP, MP, chattisgarh,HP jharkhand and hence they very much make up bollywood audience 2) States which speak native languages with hindi script (i.e just for name sake it's different from hindi otherwise 💯 similar to hindi) These are bihar(bhojpuri), rajasthan (rajasthani), haryana (haryanvi) ... Rajasthani, haryanvi, bhojpuri ppl can understand hindi and vice versa ditto 💯 so no change almost and hence they are also important Bollywood audience 3) languages very much similar to Hindi to an extent that even script, grammar, vocabulary is similar. These are Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, kashmiri... These ppl can understand and also speak hindi nicely and hence they also make up bollywood audience 4) bengali language is little farther than 3rd category languages but still has similarities with Hindi and bengalis can understand and watch Hindi movies and they also comprise Bollywood audience even though they have regional cinema 5) languages little more farther from hindi but still mild similarities Konkani, odiya, assamese These ppl make up Bollywood audience lesser than previous 6) languages unrelated to Hindi Tamil, Telugu, kannada, Malayalam, north east states They almost don't make up Bollywood audience I'm mentioning all this with respect to several decades of trends in cinema and grossing .. Maybe now we watch with subtitles and other languages but so far long time this was the trend and still it has that pattern So my final conclusion is that there is a market for Bollywood comprising 110 crore population of audience i.e MP, UP, maharastra, Gujarat, jharkhand, bihar, chattisgarh,west bengal, haryana,delhi, uttarakhand, jammu and kashmir, goa, HP..... Hence Bollywood industry is almost 15 times bigger than tamil industry and no wonder even shitty films become profitable and also owing to their illiteracy

Bro you forget to mention that Bollywood is also international especiall because of Sha Rukh Khan. I live in Germany and most of the Bollywood movies dubbed here are of SRK. They are sold as DVDs here or sometimes broadcasted in whole german dub in television. Especially the classics from 2000s like KhabiKhabiKhum , KuchKuchKottaHe were famous here. Hope one day Tamil films also get dubbed in german and other european languages.
But the popularity phase declined. Now only Sha Rukh Khans movies are dubbed. From the tamil movies : Chandramukhi (bad dub), Raavanan and Jagame Thandhiram are.in german.

Actually many South Indian movies still try to glamorize heroines. Especially Tamil movies, majority of heroines are not even Tamil! While 90% of heroes are. They are light skin women from other parts of India, usually North India. This itself promotes an unrealistic expectation within the Tamil female community who are already affected by colorism. Maybe directors should start casting heroines who are actually Tamil and look Tamil.
