This takes an incredible amount of control. I don't think people who have never danced understand how difficult this dance is.

I think this piece particularly because it is heavily inspired by Indian classical dance. Looking at their poses and half sitting posture so yes a lot of control

This dance has been called "Arab", or "Hindu", since its creation. By carefully observing the choreography and the traditional costumes, we can see that the duet takes here the positions of the Gods of India...
@rigelmoon5230
@rigelmoon5230 4 года назад
I was just about to comment asking if anybody knew where exactly they had gotten these postures, because from the very entrance, the dancers were adopting postures and even steps that weren't Arabian, but rather from Indian classical dances
@libelle8124
@libelle8124 4 года назад
That makes it even more shocking and clearly they are both out of their abilities. Besides, what you call 'Hindu' is actually 'Thai' which doesn't make the performance one iota better.

There is also an interesting thing that this melody is taken from georgian traditional lullaby. Tchaikovsky visited very often Georgia and lived also there. Anyways wonderful choreography 🤗

I agree that this dance was a highlight of the second act, but I also found that the entire corps was spectacular in the snow scene and opening party scene. The principal dancers were also great. I'm sorry the dancer who played the toy Nutcracker was not presented at the final curtain...at least I didn't see her. This was a 2018 production I hope to see a new one next year. Swan lake is coming up within a few mo0nths and I may break down and watch that one. I love the music but have never seen the ballet.

harecreek Good day to you. About "the Nutcracker" 2018. Which Dancer are you talking about please? One of the Soloists was injured during his performance and had to stay on the floor with his legs spread and stretched out, ( the Dancer performing Arlequin), as a toy, until his female partner had finished her improvised solo, in order to replace their duet. On the video, we can clearly see the suffering in the eyes of the Dancer (Arlequin) and his discreet toe signs as a warning. This is why he was taken, in his position, as a toy, behind the magician's curtain and then backstage. He had injured a ligament. He was treated on the spot, (ice gel and others) ... And he assumed his other four roles ...

Yeah, I was going to say something like that. For a dance number titled *Arabian* Dance, the costumes don't even look remotely middle eastern

It's wonderful and mesmerizing. Can anyone tell who originally created these beautiful but unusual costumes? Do they date from the premiere of the opera in 1892?

Nope. They appeared in the mid of the 20 century when Grigorovich decided to stage an “Indian” version

While the dance is inspired by India, Russia is the only country in the world where the Arabian dance costumes in The Nutcracker are inspired by Middle East. The other ones in ROH etc. give me a headache.

Why is dance called 'Arabian' when what we see is seriously badly version of Thai?
@lavinder11
@lavinder11 3 года назад
That's the title of the music. It's famous for being called the Arabian chord
@OreadNYC
@OreadNYC 3 года назад
Tchaikovsky originally set the last act of the ballet to take place in the Kingdom of Sweets. The various dances in the divertissement which entertain Clara and the Prince represent drinks frequently served with sweets -- tea from China, coffee from Arabia, and chocolate from Spain. (Tchaikovsky most likely put the Russian Dance in there even though it doesn't represent anything specific because he was Russian and didn't want his country left out.) However, some companies opt to take artistic license with the original staging and put different twists on it. Here, the artistic director has chosen to make this more of an Indian rather than Arabian dance. (That being said, I originally thought of Thai dance when I first saw the costumes.)
