Hello everyone and welcome back to the channel and the start of a new Bolt Action project! After spending three months painting my winter themed US Airborne, I have decided for a bit of a change of scenery and I have started a British army in Burma themed Bolt Action project.
Much like my US Airborne, the plan of this proejct will be to kitbash/convert every single figure in the platoon to give it a really unique and individual look. In this video, I am going to be showing my test of concept figures to see if the kitbashing idea will work. I also run through the different kits I am going to be using and my plans for the project moving forward.

It’s good to see the Forgotten Army getting some appreciation, my great grandfather was a Universal Carrier commander in Burma/India from 43-45.

That's awesome, thanks for sharing. Having researched the campaign it was absolutely one of the more difficult theatre of operations in WW2. I'm going to ensure the project does it justice. It's always important to remember that for us it's a hobby but people gave so much of themselves in reality 🙂

This has nothing to do with the british but my great grandfather was a us marine, my other great grandfather was in the navy, my great great grandfather was in the army, and my other great grandfather was working on building a us base in the pacific and was a japanese pow during the war. I only know a few stories about each but they were all in the pacific so it is actually possible that some of them might have met eachother.

That's awesome Roger! It's a shame that they didn't share your enthusiasm for it as that sounds really pretty cool! Thank you, it's a part of the hobby that I enjoy the most and my next video/project won't be WW2 but it definitely involves a whole lot of kitbashing! Really glad you enjoy the channel, thank you for the kind words 🙂👍

I guess you really were tired of snow - These turned out great and the thick green foliage on the bases fits the new locale
@OnPointHQ
@OnPointHQ 2 года назад
I really gave some thought into how I wanted the basing to look for these chaps. For my other armies I had gone for jungle scrub but looking at a lot of reference photographs, mud was definitely a factor so I opted for more a more muddy/puddles look with some really basic clump foliage 🙂

Cheers buddy, much appreciated and apologies for the delay in responding! While I was happy with the basing on these chaps, I was less happy with the uniform. Looking back it was too 'uniform' whereas it should have been different mixes of greens to represent the faded materials etc. I've been working on a few more test figures with plans to resurrect this project later this year 😀👍

The first squad looks very nice, i like the short pants, and how every model is unique, that grass looks good for jungle also. Bren carrier looks good.

Thanks Lucian! I think the challenge of hanging a full project of unique and individual kitbashed figures can be difficult but certainly rewarding. The Bren Carrier was one of the most enjoyable things I've painted this year 🙂

Cheers buddy! I definitely agree with you about the mixing and matching of figures as kitbashing is one of my favourite parts of the hobby. I'm never really sure how they are going to turn out or if they will actually work but having unique and individual figures at the end of it is always worth the time and effort 🙂

Totally agree with the previous comment about nice to see the forgotten army being remembered. I want to do Chindits and Gurkhas but unfortunately am no painter or modeller like yourself. I await and look forward to the next videos on this project. Good luck
@OnPointHQ
@OnPointHQ 2 года назад
I'll be honest, it's not a theatre of the war that I was overly familiar with until recently. When I start a new project I like to do research and immerse myself in the background and history of the figures I'm building and painting. I would definitely say go for it and have a go at the Chindits and Gurkhas' if that's what you want to do. If something interests you, paint it. Having looked at the uniforms, you can use a mix of all different greens and experiment with washes etc to get that jungle feel. I've said on the podcast a few times that just in putting paint on a figure, you are succeeding at the hobby 🙂

They look absolutely spot on Ste, lovely work. I wonder if Warlord have considered bringing out a set that uses the standard bodies with the shorts sleeved arms, they'd have to engineers the sprue, but I think they already have the sculpts covered from the other British boxed sets.
@OnPointHQ
@OnPointHQ 2 года назад
Cheers Stu! That's actually a really good idea. It's probably years in the future but if Warlord released a British infantry box set in Sicily and Italy that would be ideal. But I'm constantly impressed at just how well these kits go together and still look like they are actual kits and not kitbashed 🙂

I'm only just getting into Bolt Action and wanting to make an Australian themed army in the New Guinea campaign. Alas, all the Commonwealth Infantry set are wearing shorts, which doesn't seem right - saving green stuffing trousers onto them all, it looks like this could be a great option to kit-bash two sets together to get my Australians sorted! Thanks for the inspiration.
@OnPointHQ
@OnPointHQ 2 года назад
Hey Alex, this would be a perfect way to put together an Australian project. This project has stalled for me but the two kits go together tremendously well with very little requirement for green stuff. There is definitely the capability for coming up with some really interesting and unique looking miniatures. Good luck with it all! 🙂👍

Very nice. I started doing similar but it was with the old British Army set, which isn’t very good and didn’t go well with the later commonwealth and 8th Army. Now I’ve got the new plastic Brits & Canadians I’ll be able to revisit this.
@OnPointHQ
@OnPointHQ 2 года назад
Thanks Lee and yes, I seem to recall a couple of update videos that you made where you were working on a Burma project. Yes, that first British infantry set wasn't exactly ideal for kitbashing or converting but the new one really is so much better. It's much more in scale with other kits and I've found it works seamlessly with the 8th Army sprues. Definitely a recommended combination 😃

Really nice new intro Ste. Great to see such a change for you from modelling in the European theatre and now moving into Brits in the Far East. When you have assembled these models what do you do and use to fix the arms without gaps?
@OnPointHQ
@OnPointHQ 2 года назад
Thanks Leslie. Yeah I fancied a bit of a change of theatres and have always enjoyed working on jungle themed armies. For this one I'm going for a more muddy look rather than jungle scrub. For plugging any gaps in the figures I use liquid green stuff and sculpting tools. Thankfully with Warlord kits there is never much of this to do 🙂

@OnPointHQ
@OnPointHQ 6 месяцев назад
Cheers Ben, glad you liked the video! Now there's a question....from what I remember I used Vallejo Russian Uniform Green as this was what I had used when I was painting my Bolt Action Australians. The webbing is Vallejo Khaki. I then applied a wash of Agrax Earthshade. For the highlights I added a drop of Vallejo Ivrory or Off White to the original colours. I actually parked this project as I wasn't happy with the progress and realised the uniforms were a bit too.....uniform. Looking at references photos, uniforms were faded etc. I did paint up a couple of miniatures in this scheme but it didn't go anywhere. The plan is to use what I currently have completed for games of Firefight with my friend's IJA 🙂

Outstanding work there!🖐 I’m working on the Australian 7th Division at the moment as they were in both Africa and the Far East. I’ve just received a Universal Carrier today and was wondering about the rules for it. If you or someone could do a video on it that would be great. I know they carry five guys but when the five guys hop out can I still drive around and do shooting?🍻
@OnPointHQ
@OnPointHQ 2 года назад
Thanks Luke! There is a video in my Bolt Action Basics playlist about the rules for transports but yes, you're correct. After the passengers have disembarked, the carrier will still be able to be given orders. I often use mine to provide fire support to the troops that have just disembarked. The only downside is that if at the end of a turn there is an enemy unit closer to the transport than one of your own units, it is removed. Hope that helps 🙂

Excellent work! What color did you use for the fatigues?
@OnPointHQ
@OnPointHQ 2 года назад
Thanks Colton, much appreciated! For the main uniform I used Vallejo Yellow Olive with a small drop of Yellow Green added to it. This was followed by quite a heavy wash of Agrax Earthshade and then basic highlights were added using the same formula as the original colour. With them being based in the jungle I don't need every uniform to be exactly the same colour as this represents fading and weathering 🙂

Thank you! They should fit but I found tha that when I was working on my kitbashed winter US Airborne the flats of the arms were slightly smaller than other kits. But I have got back into Bolt Action and I'm currently working my way through a US Mechanised Tank Destroyer platoon project. The British in Burma will be revived at some point as I worked out what I didn't enjoy about it - the uniform was too samey looking.
