The EFL allowed an owner who didn’t know that Bury was a town and had no proof of funds as well as having no football interest - the EFL should be blamed massively for this
The EFL not gonna show you how to run your club, why should they? Fans need to organise and take ownership of their clubs and really stop moaning. You need custodians and board members who care and build foundations. There are well run clubs all over the country. What you see at Bolton is bad management coupled with fan apathy. On and off the pitch.
Nah it's the fans fault really They should have flat our refused to buy any tickets or merchandise untill the owner walked out If the fans wanted him out They should have paid him nothing
so fascinating to watch this now knowing how it all plays out, and how all these conversation points have been discussed at length. they're doing it right. super phil parky.
Andy Townsend chirping up about his mate all the time whilst Parky professionally disagrees and keeps a level head. Just let Parky speak for half an hour, someone who's dealt with Chairman Ken for three years, diligently working away all whilst working under a selfish madman and incredible constraints doing a job which does nothing for his career prospects. Wish him well elsewhere, other clubs would be lucky to have him.
@@JamieLandan you utter numpty. People have jobs at the club. It brings revenue to the area on match days. It doesn't just affect the players. It has a knock on effect right across the city. go give your head a wobble you trolling prick.
I was living in Manchester last year from the US.. Traveling to Bolton on a odd Saturday or Sunday fixture was one of the highlights of being in the UK. Some of these teams should be treated as historical sites. Lovely fans and dedicated players that deserve better. Bought a mug from the club for early morning football here in the states. Cheers Bolton!
“I don’t do anything up there, I didn’t even know there was a team up there to be honest with you. I’m not a football fan.” - Steve Dale (Bury owner) How was someone like this allowed to buy a club? the EFL should be ashamed of themselves.
Russell Morton probably thought he could buy it, help it grow short term and then sell it for a profit, but obviously he doesn’t know anything about football so he didn’t really think it through
EFL don't care about clubs. While Bury were going out of business all they cared about was Milton Keynes getting their name put on programme. Sums the EFL up.
These aren't the first clubs to go t*ts up ... Until the game gets restructured, we'll see loads of others follow suit! With exception to the top 10 in the Premiership - I expect all the other 80+ clubs are one bad deal away from financial ruin! A massive restructuring is required, with some of that top money needs to move to the lower leagues! These clubs are more than businesses, they are community hubs and are historical treasures!
I'm a Villa fan. We couldn't pay a tax bill last summer. This nearly happened to us. We were incredibly lucky that new owners stepped in when they did. I could't agree more about the money being spread around. The financial divide between the top and lower leagues is mindblowing. Football TV deals are slowly killing the lower leagues. Top tier clubs (including mine) getting so much money and the others get a pittance. It HAS to change, before it's too late for a lot more clubs. The championship final playoffs were constantly billed as the "the richest game in football". If you took half of the money that Prem teams get and spread it around the lower leagues, situations like Bury and Bolton could possibly be avoided.
@@sisloan they get paid proportionally to what the league brings in I think. The argument you are making is just as unsound as women asking for equal pay in football when they bring in 20 times less money
@@sisloan The latest TV deal by the EFL was opposed by the top clubs in the Championship including Villa because they said the EFL had sold the clubs short. But it went ahead because the teams in League 1 and League 2 were happy with what the were going to get. They could have had more but they were short sighted and got £ in front of their eyes. Most of these clubs will never be shown live on TV so they don't care they will take what they can get. I support Leeds and almost half of our games last season were shown live and the same will happen this year. We joke at Leeds that when the fixtures are announced that for Leeds they should say some time during the weekend of ***. This messes the fans about particularly the bigger clubs because some of their fans have to fly to get to games. In the case of Leeds and I think this will apply to other clubs as well for a home game they get £100,000 for a live game but for an away game they get just £10,000. Compare that to what happens in the cup, for the away game at Newport in the cup that was shown live Leeds got £144,000 for an away game. As I said at the beginning there has to be something seriously wrong with the way the EFL negotiates its TV deals and the way the smaller clubs are more than willing to accept what ever is offered.
@@mbotela9979 We may as well just shut all the other leagues down then if it's only about what the league brings in. If you don't support grass roots football and filter enough money to the lower leagues then the situation Bury have found themselves in happens and the game dies, apart from the very top level.
I can’t believe that the Man City fans were outraged about the draw against Spurs . All of them moaning on social media saying things like I am never going to a man city game or football is done for me . Whilst other clubs are struggling to survive. It’s absolutely ridiculous. I hate when the rich snobby clubs/fans don’t understand the passion for football and really don’t care. All they care about is winning the prem or something like that. The richer get richer poorer get poorer
Parkinson really impresses me. I'm glad he brought up Villa,, because I've been sitting here feeling intensely lucky we went up this season. We would have been in MAJOR trouble if not.
Wimbledon ,Leeds ,Charlton ,Blackpool ,Villa , Portsmouth ,Sunderland . The list gets bigger and bigger because the EFL and FA allow these takeovers and do not intervene with any restrictions to stop club mismanagement .
Just want to say a big thank you Phil for all the good moments you have given us and Good luck to your future you will be remembered for it BWFC I’m a Bolton fan and what you have done for the club is amazing with no money you got us to the championship and you and survived just shows what a Quality manager you are ♥️♥️
@@billycole3565 bolton were in Europe 12 years ago beating athletico Madrid and drawing against bayern and now they are struggling in league 1 its a disgrace to football that the EFL allowed two greedy bastards ruin two clubs with over 100 years of history
If Bolton and bury were founders of the football league why not let the clubs be the efl borad members don’t leave it to dickheads who don’t know what they are doing and just ruined both histrionic clubs with out fail
The EFL have to take the lion's share of the blame for what's going on at both Bolton and Bury. Didn't do proper checks on the owners and allowing them to embezzle money out of the club's. These aren't new situations, Leyton Orient, Coventry City, Leeds United and so on have all have owners that have failed them and the EFL could have stopped this by doing proper checks
Watching this sad sorry tale from Australia. My Dad was born and raised in Bolton and it's so sad to see a club with such a rich history be dragged down like this. I really feel for the fans of Bury and Bolton - the heart of their community will be ripped out by incompetent or selfish owners who just don't get that Football is more than a business - for some people who have a lot of crap in their life, going and watching their local club is the only bright moment in their week - the EFL needs to do better - the fall of these clubs are like the canary in the mine - they are a warning that there is something terribly wrong with the administration of the game.
Tight fisted Leicester sell a player for £80,000,000 ,then buy a good young lad from Bury for £100,000 when he was valued at £500,000. WELL DONE LEICESTER !
@@johnlowdon5809 So, you go to a shop that is having some financial issues. There's something in there that you want to buy that was £5, and the shop changes the tag from £5 to selling for £1 instead. Do you pay £5? Thought not....... Regardless of this - blaming Leicester for their demise seems ridiculous to me
With regards to the handling of Bury FC by the incompetent English Football League (EFL)... I feel if we the genuine supporters of English football, where to just say 'ok that's it then', then we will be the ones to let this happen again and again to other clubs, and accept what the EFL has done to be correct! But what the EFL has done isn't correct, because what they have done is to take the easy way out, and not give an ear to the new bids that have come in from interested parties as far away as Switzerland. Also I am so disappointed with The EFL, because I feel they could of given Ivan Lewis MP for Bury South and his consortium, a further twenty four hours to take over the club. As I stated earlier, in the amateur games teams have to make up an eight game deficit to finish off their fixtures and in some cases, they only had two weeks to do this! We the supporters need to pile as much pressure onto The EFL, stating that they are not fit to rule, because if they where they would have stepped in and suspended the sale of Bury FC for £1 at the time it happened. And just to rub salt into the wounds, The FA (who have kept quiet throughout) gave out a statement saying that Bury FC, would not be able to contest the FA Cup this season! This news I heard on Sky Sports, and this was followed by news on Alexis Sanchez' loan move to Inter Milan, of which Manchester United would still have to prop his wages up to the sum of £6 million! To sum up. It feels like the EFL have had to come down hard on Bury FC, its staff and its fans. They have done this to show Bolton Wanderers what will happen if they dont get their act together. I think the EFL don't have the compassion or the empathy to understand the complexity of the situation, and have taken the easy way out!
the EFL seem to have double standards. Bolton have been given extension after extension. It seems the justification for it by the EFL is that Bolton were still able to play games and Bury couldn't. Lets hope that one of the Bury offers works out and they can start again next season.
Yeah the money Man utd will pay alexis sanchez to NOT play for them for a year would have paid Bury's mortgage for Gigg Lane practically twice over .. it's a madness
Anyone remember Big Sam's first couple of years promotion to and then the first few seasons in the PL with that Bolton team 2000-03?Jääskeläinen, Hendry, N'Gotty, Campo, Nolan, Okocha, Djorkaeff, Salva to name a few off the top of my head. May they please return to them days again coming from a Celtic and Arsenal fan 🙌🏻
I was at Old Trafford when Knighton came out with the ball juggling crap. Thankfully he didn’t get his hands on United!! That would have been a disaster!!
With the insane amounts of money in the premier league, why can’t the clubs put a bit of money in each to save the lower league clubs that are in danger of going out of business?? The sums that are needed normally to save these clubs is about a weeks wages of a top premier league player. The top clubs benefit as well because they can pick up players from the lower leagues. It’s so avoidable.
There is a basic flaw in the way the EFL is run and that is that the main decisions are made by the club chairman/owners themselves. It's like having the foxes guard the chicken house. There is no way the Chairmen will vote for something that may disadvantage themselves. I support Leeds and when the EFL voted on our 15 points deduction a few years ago the Chairmen of Leagues 1 and 2 voted for the -15 points to stand because it was in their interests to get the money from the Leeds travelling fans. While most in the Championship voted against it because they saw exactly the same thing if Leeds got a quick promotion back. Those Chairmen were looking for a short term gain and for some of them it came back to bite them in the rear end when they ran into problems of their own. The EFL have proved time and time again that they are not fit to run their leagues. The FA as the governing body of football in England should be launching a full and independent enquiry into the state of the game within the Championship, League 1 and League 2 and should enforce any changes that, that enquiry makes with the threat of withdrawing a clubs FA registration if they refuse to comply. Under FIFA rules if a club does not hold its governing bodies registration it cannot take part in any league. The EFL have had twenty years to sort these problems out and they have failed time and time again. They've had their chance and it's now time for the FA to take action.
The big problem long-term is who will buy these clubs. You have to have enough money to pay the running costs for two years. If you have that kind of money, why invest it in a money pit? Fans aren't millionaires by and large. They can't buy these clubs. Would Richard Branson buy a club? No. He knows it's a stupid investment. Those who love the club can't afford it and those who can won't waste millions on a bad investment
The only reason the premier league teams are able to function is tv money and rich owners. They are in hundreds of millions of debt most of them but classed as sustainable for some strange reason. Imagine those banks call in that money? Most would be fucked. Maybe it needs to happen! This is what happens when the sport gets infiltrated by politicians and big business
Players wages massive issue esp in football league. Cap Championship players at 10 grand a week tops. League One 5 grand a week. League Two 2500 a week. Watch how less clubs in football League get into financial trouble.

Good news for the fans but stitch up for Bury ! I could see this happening all along sadly ......... The EFL heirarchy and the Premier League bed buddies out together to save their own reputation and embarrassment able to bend all the rules in order to save Bolton Wanderers who was the former mainstay of their own premier league , for many years and who might well have been in more financial debt than Bury , but chose to bend the rules to let Bolton lifesupport get extended and now a new "saviour" owner take over whilst not extending time letting little old Bury (who sadly probably have no obvious in the EFL saving go to the wall still . Any club on the brink is always sad for the fans who always loose out but atleast for the greater good of the rotten business game treat them Bolton same as Bury, so atleast there would be ALOT more scrutiny of the EFL PREM rules to avoid another big club fail , instead of sweeping Burys demise under the carpet similar to Chester and Darlington etc .
Didn’t agree with his tactics most of the time but as far as managers go I don’t think you can beat parky for resilience. Loved the 2016/17 season and the fact he did it under a transfer embargo speaks wonders about the job he did under the specific circumstances☝🏻
The Big 6 and a couple others get all the attention from Sky and the EFL. The only EFL team to get any love from Sky and the EFL has been Salford... and we all know why it's where the money is for them! The money going to the top end of football Compared to lower league and grassroots football is beyond any quick fix!
Sad times for these two ....I'm an Oldham fan & we're always on our arse aswell.... especially with the Arab prick who bought us.... he is exactly the sort of owner who Townsend/Warburton are speaking of...no affinity or love for the club whatsoever
This is a sad sign of what has happened to English football. Clubs now care more about 'fans' on the other side of the world than they do about their true hard core supporters who follow their clubs everywhere and at no small cost as well these days.
i like the way andy townsend brought my club Leicester into the conversation in terms of what ownership should be about and the way its run with the fact its not just about investing in the club, its also investing throughout the community which is what our owners do. So sad to see a former PL team Bolton in this position and my heart and soul goes out to every person associated with Bury who got expelled by EFL last night. As a neutral football fan as well I felt upset and really angry at the same time because no one deserves to see their club get kicked out as it affects everyone's livelihoods.
Any deal has to be done in 14 days now. Or they are out of the league. I'm under the belief that there is around 14 million of creditor debt tied to the club by the administrators. That 14 million has to be covered and then you need enough money to run the club. Staff and player wages, overheads. Anyone coming in will need deep pockets. They are playing youth team players since they only have about half a dozen senior players left and no manager. It isn't a pretty situation.
Andy Townsend was a really poor choice of guest on this episode. He's known to be friends or at least associated with Ken Anderson (now former owner of Bolton) and was possibly the least impartial guest Sky Sports could have had on. Very disappointing.
Notice how he was 'instrumental' getting Ken and his gang in when things were going well, but 'hasn't spoken to him in ages' since our situation went tits up. The guys a prick. Bang average footballer, sub-standard pundit. His opinion's irrelevant...
On the buying clubs issue, should it not be illegal to transfer the debt you have incurred to buy a club to that club? The person or entity doing the buying shouldnt just be allowed to dump their debt on the club. It wrong.
Notts County almost went under a few weeks ago, but were taken over just in time. Fans collected money to pay the non-playing staff at the club who hadn't been paid in weeks.
Norwich had no money and no rich benefactor, so they changed the model. I like what they are all saying but at no point do they discuss the fact that maybe the owners were shortsighted when it comes to running a "club".
Knowbody has mentioned the real problem and its the EFL itself ,and its restrictions on clubs trading ,sometimes in order to keep afloat. These Transfer windows have caused more problems than needed in the past you could sell or sign a player to help your situation up until middle of march, unhappy players could leave and not sit around moaning, We adopted the European model that came out of Italy and Spain ,were the top teams owned by unscrupulous characters raided regional clubs then shut it down , leaving them always stronger than the rest , its why the Milan's and Madrid's etc ran away with their leagues every season, its finally happened in England, I'm just surprised clubs clubs haven't fought these restrictions on movement of players in court
Strange but True: Bolton have a better Premier League pedigree than our very own, former double European Champions Nottm Forest!! As for Bury, well... they did beat us 2-0 at Gigg Lane in 1997😎😂
Sorry to hear about Bury. I hope Bolton can get themselves the potential new owner within timescale that they deserve. Villa were one of the very fortunate few to acquire two very astute, wealthy businessmen, both of whom have sporting interests/investments, to secure the long term future of our club. We went into last season just happy we had a team to watch play. Horrible to know your are potentially one bad owner away from having your heart and soul ripped out of your chest.
Both clubs are about 130 years old. Bolton were winning FA cups in the 1950s! Clubs like this are pillars of English football. I hope things get sorted out.
If the guy that brought bury for a quid just prolonged the club. If he could buy it 4 a quid no1 else wanted it the efl cant sell something nobody wants to buy.
Big time 100% agree players in League One top ones on 10 grand plus Ipswich Town and Sunderland players on about. Cap salaries watch how financially clubs cope better
Are you kidding? I'm not a Bolton fan but they should absolutely be helped out. Bolton are one of the original old clubs and their potential is huge. A few years ago I would never have believed this sort of situation would affect them. A club like Bolton should always be in the football league at the very minimum. I hope they eventually get back up to at least championship level. All the best for the future from a PNE supporter (no, not a fan... which has become so popular of late. 'Fans' come from Thailand and Korea and change their allegiances with their clothes. Supporters are the life blood of us old clubs, not fans).
Time for all the TV companies to stop squabbling about TV rights and how much money they are all making. Lets get back to what makes this game special... fan bases built over generations. Stop these owners coming in and just buying a club to make a profit.
the ultimate goat MESSI Similar situation at Bury , they have been a 2 week extension (same extension that Bury given) to find a buyer or they’ll be expelled as well
If you wish to be an owner of a football club, you should have to put say two years worth of running costs in a account held by the EFL. Stop this garbage of football clubs being a business. It's that mentality that is killing the game. Plus players in lower leagues being paid far too much money. If they want premier League style wages then go join a premier League club.
Loads needs to be done! Improve the fit and proper persons test .. fans partly owning the club alongside investors needs to be more promoted and assisted .. efl clubs could place a wage cap for each division to ensure that clubs dont offer ridiculous wages short term in the hope they make it to Prem. All Prem and big Championship clubs should have community partnerships with smaller local clubs. The prize money for lower leagues could be massively improved if the premier league donated 1% of their broadcasting deal to the Efl. Clubs cant start disappearing because we are facing a future where there are less professional clubs and a lot of these current historic but not profitable clubs could become semi pro which would be sad. Hopefully the FA will place a Phoenix Bury club high enough up the pyramid like national league north or something because their fanbase deserves more than that tbf.
The EFL should have the power to force a sale at a price set by a 3rd party valuer if a club enters administration. This would mean that if a club was in financial trouble the current owner couldn't go back and forth negotiating slowing down the process. Bury went under with an offer on the table. I don't know if it was a fair offer, or if it was going to be enough to keep the head above water, or if the administrators felt it gave enough to the creditors. But I will always wonder if Steve Dale refused the offer hoping to maximise his return on investment.
Why does this sound like they don't know anything? It sounds like they really don't know anything about the situations with the clubs and they're just sitting around talking about an issue they just heard about 20 minutes before the show started? @12:48 - is the financial situations of teams a secret? Is it not known a team is in trouble until the "For Sale" sign goes up? Is that a UK thing? This show? I'm an American and I'm used to all the "inside" coverage of sports here so listening to this is...hard...it sounds like they don't even fully understand the role of the EFL (not that I do, but it doesn't sound like they do either)... Is it the nature of English soccer? I'm trying to overstand how this [Bury getting kicked out] happened and listening to all the coverage it just sounds like the EFL is a hot mess. A hot disorganized mess. EDIT: I'm not trying to be critical of anyone, it just sounds like they're trying real hard not to talk bad about the EFL because the EFL is some sh*t and everyone knows it but no one wants to come out and say it...in doing that it makes this round table sound disjointed and incoherent...it sounds like either they know a lot and don't want to say it or don't know anything about the situation...
A total shambles..."owners" failed to meet some basic criteria and the EFL should shoulder a load of responsibility...shame for the fans...good luck from a Celtic fan
Clubs need to be realistic and understand their level. Bury existed for decades yo yo ing between the 3rd and 4th Tiers no way should anyone have gone in there and assembled the squad they had last season. For me Bolton are different as there is some potential long term to climb back through the leagues and have big crowds. Weren't Bolton on the brink when they were in the Premier League at one point?
They’re a small club and they need to accept that. Glad they are staying in the EFL, but they ain’t gonna be a regional player. Just live within your means and you’ll be fine. Try and push it, and it’ll get stuffed
They talk about the club being desperate when Anderson originally came in, and that's why he wasn't checked thoroughly enough. But the biggest problem is why were they in that predicament back then? How did the get away with losing so much, for so long?
The reason why the whole Bolton situation happened is due to high wages of players and Anderson being in a taking money away mood all the time and not wanting to put in. My understanding of bury is the guy didn't have the money in the first place, but the EFL allowed it through to keep the club going... which defeats the purpose of the "tests" they do.
Too much money in football, clubs should never have been allowed to be sold in the first place, completely ruined the league by teams like man C and Chelsea just buying tiltles
why dont top league give all a certain amount to help them both and with stratigies to get them back on track so they can start paying it back aswel as the club moving forward
