Bolwoningen is a Dutch neighborhood in Den Bosch, the Netherlands. It consists of 50 spherical houses grouped together with winding paths between them, and next to a canal. The community was built in 1984 by the artist and sculptor Dries Kreijkamp with a grant from the government to build experimental housing. In the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, a severe housing shortage meant that massive residential neighborhoods were designed and built without much focus on making the buildings interesting or attractive. To counter this, there was a government subsidy to encourage a more original and experimental approach to neighborhood creation.
Each Bolwoning (literally "bulb house", or "ball house") is built with reinforced concrete and fiberglass. Each house has three main levels, with storage at the bottom. The first level is the bedroom, the second is the bathroom, and the top floor is the living space. The upper space has unique round windows that offer panoramic views. The houses have been and continue to be occupied since the community was first built.
