In this video we take a close look at Jon Bon Jovi's vocal and songwriting skills! It's always a treat to zoom-in on the details of how to get to these vocal sounds!
Bon Jovi - Blaze Of Glory - ISOLATED VOCALS - Analysis and Singing Lesson
Jon Bon Jovi recorded “Blaze Of Glory” as a solo project while he was taking a break from the band and in addition to branching out from the group, he made his debut acting in the movie Young Guns II.
What other artists can you think of who have acted in the same film they helped write the soundtrack to? Share with me in the comments!
"Blaze Of Glory" to me is kind of like part two of "Wanted Dead Or Alive" and I hear a lot of Richie Sambora's influence, especially in the chorus.
As we look at Jon’s isolated vocals we’ll explore how he gets his unique signature sound along with how he wrote such a well-crafted song.

Jon is a massively underrated singer. What sounds easy, isn't when you try and do it. He didn't have the highest range, nor did he try to. But he was THE SOUND of the late 80s and he's managed to keep it up with relentless touring, until the last few years. He is getting older, and he's voice has done many miles, but there isn't many people that could walk in his shoes and do what he's done over 40 + years. God bless Jon.

Blaze of Glory is hands down the best album I've ever heard. This was Jon at his peak. The live version from 1991 academy awards gives me goosebumps. This whole album was just pure gold. Billy Get Your Guns, Blood Money, Miracle, Dyin' ain't much of a livin', and possibly my favorite vocals from Jon is Santa Fe. Just amazing how good he was back then. Also the young guns movies are classics, just watched them both again! Thank you for this video Ken! Now we just need a reaction when he does this song live like I wrote above =P Edit: Please do isolated vocals of Santa Fe :D

People/fans are forgetting how long Bon Jovi's concerts were. With each album/tour they've gotten longer. In the 90s they've gotten over 2 hours long, same in the 2000s and in 2010s, with up to 2.5hrs. On some occasions even almost 3 hours with more encores. And Jon really was a giver. He would sing Always in the 2nd encore, after already singing and running around the stage for 2+ hours and we all know, that Always is one of the toughest songs. As much as I'm upset with him, that he didn't take care of his voice better, he always gave his best to the fans on the concerts. You have to give him props for that.

The movie producers wanted to Use dead or Alive, but Jon thought it wasn’t appropriate for the movie due to lyrics like “ on a steel horse I ride” So he had a meeting with the producers and whilst they sat and ate burgers Jon wrote Blaze of Glory. They were gobsmacked.

Jon Bon Jovi sang the fuck out of this song! 🤘 Unfortunately, there's no way he could sing this song anywhere near the original these days. Up to "... and the Earth was last nights bed" he would still make it, but the rest? Forget it. The 2011 Hyde Park performance was still good though 👍. "Blaze Of Glory" is one of his best moments lyrically, in my opinion. This song was a statement for him as a songwriter. Obviously most of the material was previously co-written with Richie Sambora, but "Blaze Of Glory" proved that he could also write more stuff on his own and that set him apart from others of his peers, showing critics that he was more than just a pretty boy from a so-called hair metal band. "Bed Of Roses", "I Believe", "Dry County" and "Always" followed.

This song is really clever, from the first couple of lines you see a cowboy in your head sleeping beside some fire (hopefully) with his coat under his head and then my brain moves into thoughts of the old westerns where they were going to face off on the street, that whistling sound all movies seemed to have and their boots on the board sidewalks before stepping down into a dust blowing street? It is just that well written. ❤️

I really enjoy those iso tracks- great work Ken. In terms of Jon's singing: the great ones know what the song needs and give it just that. A lot of times we want to show everything that we've got, so we over-sing, over- dramatize, lose dynamics or (and as a guitarist I know we are very often guilty of that) we simply over-play. That is actually a very important skill, to understand what the song needs.

Love these isolated vocals. It definitely gives an extra, or new nod to some lyrics, that aren't focal points, in the finished track. Yes, JBJ went to Catholic school, & was even an Altar boy so the biblical lines are a great canon for him to utilise. I love the: "I'm a colt in your stable, I'm what Cain was to Abel, Mr catch me, if you can." line, although it to me about 15yrs (pre-Google) to work it out, lol. Richie def isn't credited, so pretty sure he wasn't helping out for free. I think the film company "wanted" to use Wanted 🙄(sorry) , but Jon wanted to write something specifically for the movie. He won a Golden Globe & Oscar nomination, for his trouble! 😁

I've always said the entire soundtrack is a masterpiece. Listen to it from beginning to end and each song builds the story in succession. The first song, Billy Get Your guns shows youthful energy and there's a sense of excitement about being an outlaw; blaze of glory tells the story of the reality of life as an outlaw; blood money is where he faces betrayal and loses any naivety he may have had left; santa fe, justice in the barrel and never say die all convey a steely resolve even tho times are tough; and bang a drum and dying ain't much of a living finish the album with a man that is reflecting on his life and is feeling tired and remorseful and like he's had enough. If you listen to Billy Get Your guns followed by Dying ain't much of a living you can compare the same person when he's young and enthusiastic to when he's older and jaded. Brilliant. Ken, please do a vocal anaylis of santa fe. I would also like to hear you sing it. It's a powerhouse vocal and the lyrics are outstanding.

This song is great on so many levels. The young man who has lived many lifetimes in a short amount of time and who is legit weary and tired a ready to die because in this kind of life if you dont go out in a blaze of glory then it makes all the suffering pointless. I mean he is an outlaw. Compromisng his soul daily, sinning. Asking god at the end to forgive him and let him die with dignity and not in a noose. Its really heavy stuff. Vocally I love it. He goes flat sometimes but it works because it fits with the character.

Blaze of Glory has awesome lyrics, really very well written about a gunslinger finally meeting his end the way he wants it to end... Love your channel, Ken.

I think this one was more of a 'lyrical analysis' than vocal one lol As far as I know Richie had no input on this record whatsoever, other than being thanked in the liner notes. That said, this album captures Jon at his vocal peak IMO - Santa Fe is a monster track!!

Santa Fe is one of my all time favorite songs! Jon's voice on that track is incredible! :-) Lots of great songs on that album.

Jeff Beck played the guitars. Richie wasn’t involved but I think Tico played drums. That said, Jon had already worked for years with Richie so it’s quite plausible his past influence was present in Jon’s writing/singing. I think that’s what Ken meant.

I know it’s isolated vocal Ken, but you shouldda tipped a nod to the solo on this one and had a listen. Jeff Beck played guitars on this album and his solo on Blaze is incredible. Great vid as always though . 👍🏼

I've been hoping you would cover Jon Bon Jovi. Jon wrote the song. It was his first solo song. Richie has nothing to do with this song. This is Jon's first solo song. I'm wondering what's going to happen to music? No one writes their own music or plays their own stuff anymore. They cover all the mistakes up. Jon grew up in the Catholic church. Jon was an alter boy. Thank you covering this song. Love your T shirt.

You've probably already done it back in the days, but I would recommend anyone to sit down with this album and really listen through it. The musicianship and lyrics of this album is on a level of it's own. (As for his biblical references, he was raised Catholic).

Jon Bon Jovi really is a phenomenal talent. Really a shame he didn't take more care of his voice back in the 80s. I read someplace that was in danger of losing his voice alltogether during the New Jersey tour.

Just discovered your channel and at 50 years old, I’m starting an adventure in rock!!!!! I’ve always wanted to sing and play guitar and your vids like this one are so inspiring. Especially since JBJ was one of my musical heroes as a young person and I managed to see them live in Australia back in the 80s. Analysing every second of his performances was something I did regularly back then. I felt like we were kicking back with a cuppa and talking about the good old days of rock during this (including power rock moves and air guitar etc 😂😂) it felt good! So Thankyou for putting this kind of thing out there 🙏🙏🙏. Now back to my beginner guitar and singing exercises 🥰 rock on 🤘🏻 🙏🙏💖

Totally agree that the lyrics hit the jackpot. I always thought Jon improved with Richie or Desmond Child co-writing. But total props here. Gotta believe a #1 hit song by the hottest guy in the late '80s elevated the box office because the song is so cinematic. Jon always seemed like the type to do a male / machismo version of Liza Minelli to a certain degree but it was successful. I didn't realize that he basically assembled a super group for this song. Imagine these guys doing an album together in the '90s. Jon - lead vocals, acoustic rhythm guitar Jeff Beck - lead and slide guitars Bemont Tench - organ Randy Jackson - bass Kenny Aronoff - drums

I see others have touched the subject, but beyond a shadow of a doubt Santa Fe is Jon's best performance. And by far his best written song. I think with that song he touched upon something truly magical and majestic that perhaps even he himself did not quite understand. It has a glowing soul of its own; it's a deeply spiritual and moving piece about what it is to be human with faults and all. And yes, his performance is astounding. It sounds like he realised he had written something special and almost overreached through the whole song. It sounds like he really is singing some lines dangerously teetering over the edge. Sigh, nobody in the business writes stuff like that anymore.
