Thank you for your nice comment Lilith Jinx ( Funny name you got) One of the best places i have seen to interact with our underwater friends. The fact of the matter is that Bonaire has it all : critters , baitballs , numerous fish shoals , big stuff , amazing corals , you name it ! Even the lionfish plague has been taken care of... The marine park was established in 1979 , in the end of the day this is the only way to sustain a healthy reef People in Bonaire got that right , too many other islanders still mess around with their marine environment and ruin their coastal ecosystems . Bonaire stands out as a Role Model

@@Chogogo717 Gee, i had to cast my mind back for this one but if i am not mistaken i would say " Invisible reefs" . I recall leaving the main reef and going deeper towards the 20/25 metres area where a patch reef runs parralel with the main shallower one. I remember seeing that patch reef from a distance and thinking , let's give it a try which is the greatest thing about Bonaire as you can explore endlessly . So "Invisible reefs" with 90% accuracy .

@UnderwaterJourney
@UnderwaterJourney 7 лет назад
Thanks a lot for your nice comment , much appreciated ! Gopro Hero 5 is an amazing action cam but not really dedicated to underwater video per se . Stabilization is tricky to master U/W and the Gopro is far too weightless and tiny , let alone the quality of the Zeiss lens on the AX100 . I shot Mantas in the Maldives with a GoPro once , the result , though not bad , did not fulfill my expectations . I henceforth broke my piggy bank for a Gates housing .Take care and thanks again !

Excellent video, one of the best I have seen, it is worth mentioning that the lionfish (ptoris volitans) is not an endemic species of the Caribbean, it is an invasive species, in Cancun it is collected and served already, as a table fish also at Brunettes have been taught that they are prey with great results.

You probably guessed I can't stop watching your videos. Superb yet again. I loved the scene at Salt Pier especially. We haven't dived over in Bonaire but the whole idea of having total freedom to dive at our own pace and choice is so appealing. It's back on the 'to do one day' list thanks to you.
@UnderwaterJourney
@UnderwaterJourney 3 года назад
Hello again Michael , i kind of guessed it might be you when i got the notification😭. Very kind comments once more , thanks a bunch. You are absolutely right about the freedom and peace of mind you experience when diving Bonaire. So many dive spots to choose from at your convenience . I remember one particular morning when my wife and i had decided to dive a given spot , when we got there there was a single pick up truck parked right in front . We looked at each other and i told her with a big grin : " this place is too crowded , let's move on to the next dive site". This anecdote reflects how easy it is to enjoy yourself over there + the atmosphere is laid back and the Natural park up north is a beauty ( with more dive sites ) . Salt pier ( my wife's favourite) is fun for navigation and is packed with all kinds of fish schools.I have been to so many islands where diving is the only thing to do. Bonaire is exactly the opposite. You really want to put it on your bucket list , you''ll love it .Cheers!

@@UnderwaterJourney what a lovely story thank you for sharing. I think I read in another comment that you have been diving 25 years or more....you can tell. We have dived for 22 years and seen some amazing things and places but like you both we really cherish diving at our own pace and not in large groups. Some places in the world we have dived allow just the two of us to do house reef dives but others are so restrictive and we find that much less enjoyable now. We have been close to booking Bonaire several times but it always lost out to a competitor somewhere along the way. However once this pandemic is over its 'back on the list'. Keep up the great work, we both love watching your films. If you are on fb it would be great to connect, my photo is me on a classic scooter, no worries if you prefer not to though 😊

@@michaelmuir4548 Hi Michael . Yes indeed , soon 30 years of diving and i also worked for over 15 years as a dive instructor , so i am not the ideal obedient client for dive centers 😭. I could not agree more with you , strict rules and big groups kill the pleasure of diving. Before booking a trip to a dive base or live aboard , i always introduce myself and tell them about my requirements , if it does not sit well with them , i'd rather not book. Diving used to be about enthusiast people who loved to share their passion for diving , unfortunately nowadays most dive centers/liveaboards just care about their balance sheet. All the more reason to dive places like Bonaire . Sorry Michael , i do not have a FB account ...and never will 😊!!! Stay safe .

@UnderwaterJourney
@UnderwaterJourney 7 лет назад
Hi Jimmy ! Thanks a lot , i appreciate your comment . These are according to my subjective tastes the must dive sites in Bonaire : 1000 steps for the fun of it and the beauty , The salt pier if you are into videography/photography , Karpata for the excellent reef , Boka slagbaai or nukove or playa funchi for the massive and impressive baitball , Red slave or even further south depending on the winds for the different topography and the chance to see bigger stuff... If you stay 2 weeks , you can pretty much cover the whole area . Whatever dive sites you choose , trust me ... you gonna love it . Enjoy yourself and thanks again !
@jimmyvlekke612
@jimmyvlekke612 7 лет назад
Thank you for your reply! I'll be there for 8 days and I hope that's enough to cover some of your suggested dive spots. And what about night dives and the Hilma Hooker? Are they worth it? BTW, I've got a PADI open water certificate (+ a certificate to dive till 30m) but do you know whether that's sufficient to do a guided night dive and will it be sufficient to do a dive around the Hilma Hooker? I hope you can clarify this for me!
@UnderwaterJourney
@UnderwaterJourney 7 лет назад
Hilma hooker is upside down , so rather boring but the depth will not be a limitation for your level . Night dive should always be on your bucket list wherever you go diving , it will help you build your confidence and work on your buoyancy . Watching the bioluminescent plankton is quite an experience too ! In case you go for a night dive , do not freak about tarpons , they are very inquisitive but harmless.OWD is enough to do a guided night dive but if i were you i would do my AOWD , you would then combine the pleasant and the useful + Bonaire is a great place for this course. if you are serious about diving , add a nitrox course to it . As i said Bonaire is a great place for beginners and experienced divers alike , impossible not to like it ! Take care Jimmy

Was there a few years ago doing 4 or 5 dives a day. Bonaire has amazing reefs. And the people of Bonaire are very serious about keeping the reefs in pristine condition. But the one question I had was where are all the big fish? In my week there I saw one Nasau grouper? No eagle rays. A couple of tarpon on a night dive. Maybe there’s more fishing going on than people want to admit. Also they weren’t killing the lion fish at that time.
@UnderwaterJourney
@UnderwaterJourney 5 лет назад
Hi John . Agreed , Bonaire has an incredible marine life and immaculate reefs . Many countries including the one I live in ought to follow their example . It is the only way to assure a sustainable future for those ecosystems . I also agree about big fish , we have not seen much of those either . Unfortunately ,there is some big game fishing going on over there .

Hi there . The massive bait ball you see in the video is made of scads not sardines . I personally saw it in the northern part of Bonaire ( Washington Slagbaai Park ) in Boca Slagbaai . This encounter is quite common in Bonaire all along the coast and is usually found over the reef crest in the shallow. I had already seen other bait balls elsewhere but this one was the biggest ever ...nothing comparable to the famous South Africa's sardine run though !!!

We are going here in 2020, as well as Aruba and Curacao!! Which location in Bonaire is the very best to dive when you are spending 1 day there??

Hi Paul , hard to tell but i would say either Salt pier, 1000 steps or up north in Slagbaai national park.

I really liked Karpata for underwater topography and Angel City for outstanding double reef. If I only had one day I'd do 1000 steps and Karpata since they are close to each other.
