Bonanza - Episode 7 - The Saga of Annie O'Toole - Feisty Annie O'Toole comes west with her old Da to mine silver and winds up feeding the silver miners, shanghaiing Adam Cartwright to be her partner in her tent-kitchen, "The Square Meal", and her attorney in Miner's Court when an old enemy challenges her right to her claim. Written by shepherd1138 on IMDb.com
The Saga of Annie O'Toole
Director: Joseph Kane
Writer: Thomas Thompson
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 24 October 1959 USA
Filming Locations: Bronson Canyon, Griffith Park - 4730 Crystal Springs Drive, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Swede Lundborg has struck it rich in Virginia City. He has two claims and one of them paid off. His fiance, Annie O'Toole, grabs up one of the deeds since she staked Swede. She says she, Swede, and her father, Kevin "Himself" O'Toole are all going to Nevada. "Himself" doesn't want to. The heathen air will kill him, he claims. And sure enough it does. When the Cartwrights meet Annie, her father is lying dead in the back of her wagon along side her stove. Hoss helps her bury her father on Swede's claim and she pays him with a meal. The scent of real home cooking brings every miner in the area. Written on IMDb.com
Reviews:
"As a long-time Bonanza fan, I always enjoy this episode. It was produced in the first season (1959) so all the main characters' personalities were not fully developed yet: Ben Cartwright and his sons Adam, Hoss, and Little Joe. All of them were in this episode, but it was handsome young Adam Cartwright (Pernell Roberts) who did a wonderful job of telling us the saga of Annie O'Toole. Love listening to his baritone voice. The episode had moments of light humor but had a lesson in American History showing an Irish and Swedish immigrant coming to America and seeking the promise land in the silver rush. The episode also gave a taste to the primitive law that was in the Nevada Territory during this time period. The situation of "supply and demand" was also taught in the ever-changing prices of Annie's ham and eggs." Written by ldavis8-1 on IMDb.com
"This is the first comical episode of Bonanza. It's not my favorite funny one indeed, but it's definitely a good relief from some of the heavier episodes. It concentrates on an Irish (?) woman who goes to Virginia City to search for treasure. Her father dies in route and she decides to open a kitchen on his plot while searching for silver.
Now, I get a little confused on how it all happened, but Adam becomes her partner (though he didn't really want to be), and Ben seems to be some sort of governor over the mine. Before all is said and done, there's quite a fight over one of the plots; and though O'Toole seems to be in the wrong, she thinks she's right.
Adam is the main Cartwright in this one, but all the characters are involved in this episode.
Dead: 1" Written by mitchrmp on IMDb.com

This was one of the rare comedic episodes that was very well done with real humor and not just silliness. With an excellent story as well. Ida Lupino played the part of Annie with such perfection she should have won an Emmy. I can't imagine anyone else doing it so well. Alan Hale was perfect as The Swede and we have the pleasure of enjoying the presence of all 4 Cartwrights with Adam doing an excellent narration throughout the episode.

That's Ida Lupino as Annie O'Toole, and Ida Lupino was a (if not THE) major force in early TV. For Bonanza to get her to play a part in one of their episodes was a HUGE win for the program.

Watched on February 19, 2021. I never saw this episode before or growing up in the 60's watching Bonanza on Sunday night's with my family. Thinking about it now, Bonanza came out in 1959, I was born in 1961 and have fond memories of being with my 1 of my 2 brothers, Mom and Dad, at my Grandparents farm and ranch in what is now North Central Phoenix, Arizona, what back back then was still our fields of cotton, alfalfa and Citrus. The synchronicity of my life was/ Is uncanny as my older Brother would be exactly like Adam ( educated, refined), me rather large, very tall at a very young age and the only son with blue eyes of our family, soft hearted like Eric (Hoss), who loves animals and is more comfortable working the ranch than sitting at a desk type of man, then my much younger brother, somewhat spoiled and always "chasing girls", a ladies man. Thankfully, unlike the show, our matriarch (Mom) is still, alive and well. I often wonder if they, the cast of Bonanza could see how we still honor their memory some SIXTY !, PLUS YEARS LATER. From a 59 year young Bonanza admirer in Arizona.

Ah, the old Irish story telling, story telling is the life, and it's been going on for centuries, including the 19, 20 century on the Bonanza sitcom with the Cartwright's family. One particularly interesting thing I've now noticed is the theme music, it changed, from the somewhat non motivating to the more recent rhythm, which is more enthusiastic.

It is. The Bonanza version is highly fictionalized. Her name was Bowers, not O'Toole. She was from Scotland, not Ireland and she ran a successful boarding house and laundry, not a restaurant. The mansion is located on the west side of Washoe Lake on Bowers Mansion Rd, also called Alt US 395. They picked that location because it is next to a hot spring so the house had hot running water and a heated swimming pool. The mansion and grounds are now the Bowers Mansion Regional Park. The mansion is restored with period furnishings and is a fun place to visit if you're ever in the area.

Hale played the skipper on Gilligan's Island. I have seen Hale in several other roles and enjoy his skill. I am pleased there is much in this episode to look forward to because it did not use the standard theme in the opening credits. This was also done in one of the earlier six episodes but I did;t note which one. All I know is, it is a dismal way to begin the show.

Min. 14:59 - take a look to that bra back ! It's the bra we know today, isn't it ? Well THIS kind of bra was patented in...1930s only. A funny bra called "symmetrical rotundity" or "breast-pad and perspiration-shield" was patented in 1859 by Henry S. Lesher of Brooklyn from New York. In 1893 a bra called "Tucek Breast Supporter" was patented by Marie Tucek, but the back stripes were totally different, crossing each other over the women's back. And THAT bra is the closest kind to what we know today. Well, it's just another detailed missed by the movie makers of Bonanza since the action takes place BEFORE the Civil War 1861-1865.

I noticed that also when she turned around and you could see the straps through her blouse. It struck me as odd somehow but I didn't realize why until reading your comment that spells it out.

Would you go braless if you were an endowed actress working in 1959?
@ROMANABSOLUT

@@jamesngetha6760 - you are not a smart man, are you ? That actress is performing the character of a women in the year 1861. It is HARD to believe that a woman living in the Wild West was wearing a MODERN bra which was patented and manufactured AFTER 1930. What about playing the character of a woman of 1861 driving a Corvette on the dusty roads of the Wild West ?! Dude, if you are dummy, better to do NOT make any comment. Just keep quiet, listen, read and LEARN.

Interestingly enough, While filming outdoor shots at Iverson Ranch, two of the horses became stuck in the mud and fell into each other. While the animals were uninjured, Pernell Roberts suffered a sprain and Dan Blocker broke his collarbone. Dan set his own own bone and worked the rest of the day. I tell you this because a similair thing happened to Alan Hale jr when doing Gilligan;s Island. He fell from a palm tree and broke his wrist and told noone. Like Dan Blocker he shot the scene for the rest of the day with a broken bone. Interesting how tough these two big guys where.

Mr Sweede was played by Alan Hale, Jr.. He played the Skipper in "Gilligan's Island 🏝. He was the one that said that "it was a keg" when he talked about the whiskey that he received. He's the one with the gray hair and he's a big guy. He was 6'4" tall. He was born in 1918. His dad was famous too. Oops. His character's name was Swede Lundberg.

During the 1860's, when this show was set, the Irish were one of, (if not the) largest groups of immigrants coming into the states at the time. This was likely the reason for this.
