Got my single piggy a friend from a rescue, both females, both elderly, (5&6) . The rescue piggy is utterly terrified of everything, and she actively hunted my existing piggy. So they now live side by side. And peace is restored.

It’s my understanding that in the flank spay they can also take care of ovarian cysts. I’m not sure about uterine tumors or if this method would work to remove the uterus but I’ll try to do some further research on this. I would also like to add that spaying these females essentially removes the chance that they will develop ovarian cysts in the future which is a big plus. And remember, no matter what, boys will hump, neutered or not. My Timmy was neutered and lived with a herd of 4 girls and he chased them and humped even as a 6yo 😅 Moral of the story, boars will be boars 😅

It makes me so happy that better techniques for spaying and neutering guinea pigs are spreading. They've been so dangerous and it really seems like a lot of things are rapidly happening to make procedures in general safer for guinea pigs and this is so hugely beneficial and exciting!

Hi Scotty - yes, that is the spay they did on my girl when they found a cyst on her ovary. The options were to drain the cyst and treat with hormone implant/monthly hormone injections to see if the cyst got smaller, or perform the spay through two back incisions. They removed her ovaries and unfortunately at 3 years old she did not survive after over a month of medical boarding at the vet and antibiotics. My theory is if your piggy is not suffering, do not perform any invasive surgery unless its to save their life. The cost of the back spay was around 1k in my area if anyone is interested. Giving her that surgery was one of the largest mistakes of my life. All we wanted was for her to live a long time and unfortunately it had the opposite effect.

Oh my gosh I’m so so sorry that you ended up losing her. How heartbreaking. I know the feeling of regret, I had a female years ago with a small stone, she was otherwise acting fine and now knowing what I know, she could have probably passed it, but a well known and excellent vet convinced me that surgery was the best option. She made it through the surgery but it was too much on her and 3 days later I lost her. To this day it’s one of my biggest regrets. For your girl, did she already have the cysts when they did the spay? Or was the spay scheduled and then they discovered the cyst? I’ve had a vet tell me that if they already have cysts there is a higher chance of risk with the spay. Either way I’m always hesitant to opt for surgery unless absolutely necessary. The spayed girls we’ve gotten here at the rescue were either spayed by a shelter or another rescue which makes things easier on us because we will not neuter our boys. I had multiple ask me why not just neuter Joe, but there was no way I was willing to take the risk. So him being paired with a female already spayed by the shelter has been a blessing. ❤

My vet says the same. I asked about neutering my boys and she said she doesn't neuter because of how dangerous it is. She will only do surgery if she knows the animal is suffering or in danger, but she prefers to avoid it at all cost.

@@SoCalGuineaPigRescue vet recommended the spay after they saw the cyst on imaging. They felt the cyst upon on inspection of her stomach when i was taking her in for a simple eye poke. These animals are too fragile to put them through that stuff unless its absolutely necessary I learned.

Years ago I had a male piggie and 2 females. I got a call during break from my vet saying my piggie had come round from his operation. Some male colleagues laughed and crossed their legs 😂 Ouch!! After 4/5 weeks my piggies lived together in perfect harmony for the rest of their lives and we weren't hip-deep in babies! 😊 I explained to my colleagues just how fast Guinea Pigs breed! 🐹🐹🐹🐹🐹🐹
@ScottysAnimals
@ScottysAnimals 20 дней назад
I personally wouldn't want the operation for myself however considering how many homeless pets there are especially here in the US, neutering should be standard practice for most animals. There are exceptions, but when it comes to dogs and cats and guinea pigs and rabbits I believe it is common practice

Over almost 10 years, I've had 4 piggies, all boars. I have had luck (with the help of Fenella @ Wee Companions!!!) To each time bind 2 boys. But again, that's only my personal experience. I think another big factor is age as well. I applaud you for voicing your new opinion. ❤❤❤

Change is vital, as technology and understanding grow, we can with it. You're always keeping us up to date, that's why you and afew other channels are excellent at giving information ❤. Ps the ability to change and accept that we're not always right and are willing to learn is extremely important, thanks for this video 😁.

Update, my vet today said in her opinion a flank space is still more risky than a neuter however a flank space heals quicker and safer than your average neutering due to the position and size of the incision

Love this video---I would say bonding as far as basic bonding rules have always been a starting point,but having said that, some piggies are ones that need time and research for the one you bond them with. This was true with my Harriet. I didn't want her a solo and her history at Petco made a difficult find. Thanks to you and Valerie and needing a younger friend,baby for Harriet,I was on the look out. I also knew it had to be another skinny. Another note is their personality and Harriet was strong dominant. The rescue had the perfect one and Scotty, you pushed me out of my comfort zone as Clementine was finishing up on her preg. watch. I got her earlier, and then bonded that day. Intense and then after a week they settled into a routine. Bonding ,sometimes is catered to the needs of who your bonding with. Another important note---not to rush! Harriet and Clementine have their moments, but they snuggle by each other every night!

Yes, an OVE (ovariectomy) is often done through the flank and is much less invasive and when done with an experienced vet team has a greater chance of recovery and survival than a full spay. We pair OVE females with intact males all the time, depends on the personalities of course, but usually works. It can be done on females with cyst issues or healthy females.

While previous knowledge and experience can set a base for how anything is done, I think when you are dealing with living creatures, there can be no hard and fast rules. Guidelines should be in place so that we proceed with caution in what we do, but not to limit us in finding truer knowledge. Just because somebody has done something a million times for years doesn’t mean it’s correct or the only way. I have never had a problem with unneutered boys and spayed females. I’ve also had a couple of successful boy pairs with a single female as well as in a group of girls. It really all depends upon the personalities of the individuals. There is a different dynamic with a male-female interaction, whether the male is neutered or not. As neutering does not affect the hormones in guinea pigs (like it does in some other species, such as rats) it does not affect their behaviour, thus you’re not going to see any difference in disposition between an altered and an unaltered male guinea. Boys in general do not pursue a female in the same the way they would another male. That sounds crazy and people will disagree with me, but if you observe fully and long enough, you’ll see. There is a notable deference in his interaction even in the mounting. That being said, I have had neutered males that would not match up with a particular female because the personalities simply were not the right fit. One particular boy was very hyper and playful while the female was more skittish and quiet. We matched him up with another girl and it was perfect- actually a herd of girls. The female matched up with a calmer neutered male, and they are absolutely perfect for each other. In fact, he’s brought her out of her shell. Are there exceptions to the rules? No. Because there should be no rules when you’re dealing with personalities. Guidelines are merely tools, not instructions. To answer your question: A flank spay can be used to treat ovarian cysts, depending on the severity of the condition.

Yes, as Scotty has said, adult males have a low chance of bonding, and it appears that it's not about getting them accustomed to each other - either they will be compatible or they won't. However, I'm wondering if having gone through 2 other failed bonds and the hour-long car ride from the shelter was stressful enough that they weren't ready to immediately get in their cage for the first time together right after getting home. I wonder if we should have given each of them some time alone in the cage and settle down a little. Then put both in together?
@ScottysAnimals
@ScottysAnimals 20 дней назад
I would say an hour or so, unfortunately there's no real way to know, if they bond at the rescue and then you take them home and they don't bond again that may have to do with a small cage, or not following the same steps, or it could also be that at the rescue they were intimidated by noises and wide open spaces and maybe the temperature was too hot or too cold making them more docile. I frequently mentioned that during the bonding process. If it's too hot or too cold or if it is noisy or scary you do not get a good read

My 2yo intact male was recently paired with a young spayed female and they get along really well. He does try to mount her from time 2 time but boys will be boys lol. He is loving being the dominant one now as his old cage mate used to be king pig. I think rules definitely vary from pig to pig depending on personality.

Great, thought provoking video Scotty 👍. Bonding un neutered males with spayed females seems like a great idea. Changing our minds as we see and learn is what it's all about 👍. I think it will be better. Both the male and the females will be happy. The females won't be coming into season and trying to chat up a neutered male. Peace and harmony 👍🐹🐹🐹🐹. Thank you.
@kalcika
@kalcika 22 дня назад
This technique is not new, at least here in Hungary it was applied 8+ years ago already. Primarily for removing ovaries with cyst when the womb was still healthy. Less risky then complete removal of all the reproduction organs and quicker recovery. But they don't do it for routine spaying here unlike the male piggies' castration. Maybe because of the hormon balance issue: after some time the womb may get sick due to the missing ovaries, so it is better be checked regularly afterwards. At least this is the case when the ovaries were removed because of a cyst. On the other hand, a spayed female falls back in the ranking, in a good working group the spaying may lead to fights.
@ScottysAnimals
@ScottysAnimals 22 дня назад
It is interesting that you say spaying reduces their position on the pecking order, I could see how that may possibly be due to hormones however in my experience personality is the most deciding factor in the pecking order. The flip side is that hormonal issues due to ovarian cysts could lead to aggression as well. Thank you for sharing your point of view

It was definitely eye opening when I heard intact boars don't tend to try and mate with a spayed female. So glad the girlies don't have to put up with that! We were suspicious that our piggie had cystic ovaries so she got spayed and it was indeed a flank spay. She ended up not actually having cystic ovaries, but the vet felt perfectly comfortable doing it as a flank spay believing they were cystic.
@ScottysAnimals
@ScottysAnimals 20 дней назад
I never said intact boars don't try to mate with them, they certainly will. But it is about whether or not the two can find an equilibrium and harmony. In most cases they seem to be able to.
