The Bonnie Lass of Fyvie-O is set in the small town of Fyvie in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The backdrop of the song is the capture of Fyvie Castle by the Marquis of Montrose’s Royalist army in 1644 during the English Civil War. It was originally composed in Scottish, and still retains many Scottish words, such as brae (hill), braw (splendid), lewes (lowlands), and birk (birch). As is usual with popular folk songs, there are over 20 versions and many different titles of this tune, and changes to the setting and time period. It has been recorded by Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and the Grateful Dead, just to name a few.
