Russia and the USA are neighbors. We have a common border and as bikers, we have common interests. Bonneville is a place where we can come together. Loved the film presentation and the design/construction. Running in the classics classes is the best. It's nostalgia and modern concepts all rolled up in vehicle. You'all di very well. Some teams take 10 years to get what they want, get the bugs worked out, etc. LSR is not a forgiving enterprise. They do not give gold stars for showing up. It's hard and tough at teh same time. You'all did exceptionally well for your first time :)

Wherever the original designers of the Ural Motorcycle are they must be smiling upon you guys, not only did you make a Ural go faster than its designers ever dreamed but you set a speed record . I'm hoping that you guys keep working on that bike & come back to bonneville & try again, this time to break your own record .

I was part of the Siberian Speed Team. We went to Bonneville in 2001, entered 4 classes with a 650cc Ural and recorded in 4 classes. All 4 (2 with sidecar and 2 solo) were all over 100mph with the slowest run (mine with sidecar) at 104mph. They called us the Jamaican Bobsled Team of motorcycle racing but nobody was laughing when we went home. 3 of the 4 records have subsequently been bested but 1 still stands

the original designers of the Ural Motorcycle are BMW .
@macmclemore
@macmclemore 6 лет назад
You are right. The whole thing is stolen technology that was hidden for years behind the Iron Curtain. With that said, I do very much enjoy the idea behind the Ural. The only problem is that the modern day distributors have grossly over priced the machines.
@macmclemore
@macmclemore 6 лет назад
The original designers of the Ural were BMW. Unlike the Soviet era companies that kept churning out these old designs, BMW evoled to what they are today. Having said that, I do enjoy the idea of what Ural is. The only problem is that the current distributors have WAAAY OVER PRICED them to the point that you can’t just buy one today to enjoy it for what it is. What a shame. What a sham...

It's the name of a huge mountain range Ural,I think the original company was started kinda how VW got started really military/government needed massive production output and took over these companies in WW2 shit Ural makes all sorts of stuff I want one of them small vans Ural made for ever.

I think Burt would most definitely tell you where you are going wrong in no uncertain terms. Consider using a machined groove in the cylinder head with either wills ring or twin and earth wire in it.This will enable the cylinder head to touch down on the top of the barrel and actually wick away heat rather than just overheat and track a flame and burn away the whole assy.

This is NOT the first team to show a Ural at Bonneville! I was a member of the Siberian Speed Team, an American group of Ural enthusiasts that went to Bonneville in 2001 and set 4 records in 4 classes: MPS 650 pushrod gas, MPS pushrod fuel, 650 pushrod sidecar gas and 650 pushrod sidecar fuel. Our slowest speed (my run) was 104mph avg in 650 sidecar fuel. 1 of our record still stands. Our motorcycle was all Ural, no Harley parts, no custom frame. I applaud the efforts of a 500cc flat head effort but they were NOT The first Ural on the salt...we were: The Siberian Speed Team.

What a great documentary! I agree with some here, we need to hear the the song and music of the machine above all else, not the attempt at dramatic background music. The nam and machine have their own voice, let us hear it.. If you ride a motorcycle, you've not lived until you ride full throttle in a full tuck for miles on the salt. They call it the "Great White Dyno". It will find a way to break you or your bike. Even on the short course the feeling of euphoria at the end of a successful run is impossible to describe. The sounds, smell and even the taste of the flats is something EVERY speed junkie has to experience at least once. Doesn't matter if you are a spectator or a participant, put it on your bucket list Official "130MPH Club" member - 2003

A most interesting and informative video that is also very inspirational. Gentlemen: I wish you every success, for both Bonny and Team. I greatly enjoyed the video, and am glad you included Burt Monro's quotation. As a child I very briefly met him in New Zealand, and in my teen years saw the Indian motorcycle which gained that 1967 record at Bonneville. The M72 is a great motor, and the Ural family of motorcycles are very good machines; in my humble opinion much under-rated outside Russia. I admire Ural bikes. Kind and Respectful Regards Gentlemen, Uyraell, NZ.

Back in the middle '60s the local Indian dealer in my hometown built me a custom Indian 1200cc balanced and installed in a scout chassis. This was standard procedure for racing and Harley used their 45 incher. I was Mac's Motorcycle shop in Clarkston Washington. His name was Allan McLean. Probably the most knowledgeable mechanic builder a rider in the area at that time. On gas it would do about 125 miles an hour. However when racing, you would set the timing at about tdc or a couple of degrees after. Start the bike on gas that was left in the carburetor and since you had just put enough straight nitro in the tank you were good to go. I rode it in a hill climb with rear tire wrapped with chain and then inflated. 3 speed transmission. Wind it up while feet flat on the ground and drop the clutch, rear tire spinning. drop onto to the seat. One hard bump and up the hil you go almost vertically. Just sit as far forward as you can to control any lateral movement of the rear tire. Simple. At the drag strip, 1/4 mile 10 seconds. But I was not allowed to ride it. Had threats from some bad people in town who were trying to steal it. The engine is still cold at the finish of both events. You could lay your hand on it.

That is a fantastically beautiful bike......every part is a masterpiece. I am surprised you guys didn't go with methanol right away with high octane gasoline. When I was young and used to build engines to make the absolute power for the street without nitrous oxide, I used distilled water/methanol injection activated by a certain engine vacuum (switch) to inject right at the point of detonation. With a recurved distributor and strict attention to engine "knock" I could get engines to "walk the edge" of destruction and make great torque and horsepower. Very easy to do with water/alcohol tank, vacuum sensitive switch to turn on/off pump to the injector located in the intake and it solved a lot of my problems. It just takes a LOT of time to set up exactly where you want it. I would use ARP studs and bolts throughout the engine due to their absolutely superior strength. Many times I remachined the combustion chambers on a bike to get more efficient quench area in the combustion chambers and quell detonation. Use either a copper head gasket or machine grooves for wire "O-rings" between the head and cylinders to hold the tremendous combustion pressure. and perhaps regrind the cam to open the exhaust sooner to get rid of some heat....(if it didn't cost too much horsepower). P.S. You had enough handmade parts and instrumentation to land a '48 Skoda on the moon! Remember, Bonneville is a sickness that is nearly impossible to conquer. LOL!

Impressive! Seems the engine is the weak link here. Did you guys consider boring the cylinders out and redesigning the heads? Sleeving them in 718 Inconel might solve some problems. You'll need some sort of innovative rings to handle the interference (maybe Monel or Invar) but the works should hold up under the heat.
