Its an addiction Sam , we see a new tree we have to have it, the missus recons ive got enough .but she also says that about my motorbikes. I kept hearing the mission impossible theme in the back ground. Thanks from uk.
Good work Ozzy bonsai bloke ! The soil looks a dream to collect trees from. I was out the other day on the verge of legality myself in the UK , and it took me a full hour of digging to get an old beech tree out !
bloke Yeah, I usually go for land that's owned by the water board or forestry for logging and folk don't seem too concerned. I even had a dog Walker pass through and he had a good laugh at me after i explained. 👍
I go for walks with my wife around my local area and I too, find myself admiring trees along the trail. One day I noticed a small eucalyptus with a beautiful trunk that was positioned in the middle a fire trail. Been on a fire trail, it was only a matter of time before it was run over and destroyed. I had to (save) this tree from getting squished . I bent down and ripped it out of the ground like I was robbing a bank and shoved it in my jumper pocket. I have potted the plant and today it's one of my favorite trees.
Thanks for another awesome video!! By far my favorite Channel. Keep em coming 👍 I've been watching your videos for a long time I remember when you first Show Leo on your video he was just a little pup he's always been getting in the stuff🤣
Part of the problem with not being able to get a permit is the process of removing the tree is rushed. Imagine if you could get a permit and spend an hour or so removing it much more carefully. Nioce one anyway bloke. Its a great find.
For the thousand trees you planted on your property, I think a few from elsewhere is of no consequence. Great video, and I got a turntable from Adrian. Cheers
I didn't know in Australia was that difficult to collect yamadori, here in Quebec Canada the bonsai society of Montréal make excursions to collect trees two times a year. Hope your tree will survive I personally prefer to grow from seed or from nursery but I don't judge you is a nice little one. And yes is stupid how some governments are hypocrites protecting one tree but letting thousands to be cut for wood or farmland. Cheers
That's naughty of you! I would never do that.... Especially not with that little oak tree I walked by in the dune's yesterday. Luckily it has some great feeder roots near the base. So I have great hopes for that one😉 Btw my dog is no different in the half feral department. But with food there is suddenly obedience 😁 Anyway hope the tree survives and thanks for the entertainment. Chears Titus
Sam, isn’t it more dangerous at night when you have a shovel digging in the dirt? Hahaha! They would think your burying a corpse? 🤣🤣just kidding mate! Keep digging !🥄🥄 beautiful tree, that will survive, what tree is that again?
nice looking tree,i thought it was a tea tree at first but not sure now.. hope it survives..i live in blue mountains nsw and they are super strict here
Always love ya vids...... have to put the old paw up and admit I've done the same. Out in the wild they grow "wild" and HARD. We take a small one out and give it a brilliant life in ya collection. A small specimen that could now live on for years on years. The only rule that I like to see you perform, is filling the hole up after. Great practice. So cheers and I be waiting for your next vid!👍
Hi viz jacket, hard hat, safety glasses, ear protection, middle of the day and I doubt you would get a second look, especially if you leaned on a shovel every now and then!
I have been collecting here in Perth for a long time defenitely needs preparation before u dig if u want to gaurentee sucsses Wich is never one hundred percent lol did u crush the leaves to smell them weather it's a melaleuca, eucalyptus, banksia, acasia (wattle), gravillia. Or was it an old fodder plant like lupin or something?? I'm fully interested now. Also every melaleuca I have collected the only ones that have survived have been totally defoliated when they were dug up .
Cheers for the info mate as I'm having trouble with digging natives. I got a small shoot at the bottom but was a waste as all the trunk died. I did get success with another i dig from the garden and put it in water and gravel. Root base has been fully submerged for 2 years now and its growing still. Crazy as you would think it would be water logged. Cheers for the tip I will give the full defoliation a go. Keep in touch if you work out other tricks as I'm struggling 🤣🤣
Gday matey love ur work been in the same position many times lil. So is that an acaisia of some sort and did it surve I found useing a shirt or towle to try dig some of the root ball to take with it will increase survival rate.
Sam you are so right the laws are crazy I've got trees lined up around Mallala spoke to the local cop so lucky enough I'm safe for now He even said the laws are stupid. As for olive try finding a local community group that remove them they will be happy for you to dig them up
Sam, don't worry too much about the Tree Police, there up in Queensland where they clear 100's of Acres at a time without a permit, or maybe at a new Coal Mine protecting the Environment. Keep us posted about the Health of new Bonsai Regards.
Most Australians driving past at night seeing you do this - with your shovel - would think you are disposing of corpse. Digging up a shrub would be the last thing on their mind. Happy Digging Sam.
hi aussie bonsai bloke. really good watch i love it. you could think about setting up a underground club naming it THE PEAKY BLINDERS BONSAI COLLECTING CLUB i dont think you would bothered by many people or even the government when the word gets round on who you are...
Awesome videos!!! Ive just gotten into bonzai the last 3 days and im obsessed im in australia also. I really want to find a beautful gumtree to take out of the bush!!!
Hi, me again. After watching this video, I took my chair for a spin around my church car park, which was an old club. They have az number of old concrete pipes on their end to form large flower pots. In these are also trees which have become stunted, I will see if I can get them. Do you have somewhere I can send photos? Have you thought about trying old cemeteries.
Loved the video mate quite different and caught me off guard but so good I do the same iv also been eyeing one off now I think it's time to collect. cheers
Beautiful yamadori, Sam. I am just thinking what was on the mind of the doggy he wanted to attack the tree. Probably it was thinking it was some kind of hairy creature, or something? Funny.
I know a couple months have passed but I just watched your video, wouldn't the black bag block the leaves from getting sunlight, preventing them from producing food for the plant and therefore hinder its recovery?
Hi mate at that stage no not really. It's all about humidity and the sugars in the trunk and whatever roots you have pushing out growth😁😁🤔🤔. I'd did survive though 😊😊
Hey Sam. Im fascinated by your use of sawdust as a medium. Do you have other trees youve used it on? I use it as a too dressing, graded to size and have noticed its potential as a medium. I already mix it into my soil mix. Can it be used as a normal soil or is it only beneficial in sime situations?
Hi mate just started using it. I'm only going to use it for cuttings and newly collected trees myself. Not sure as a full time medium?? Let us know how to go with yours 😁
Cheers. Iv used peanut husks in my mix before with good success so im hoping the wood shavings have a similar effect. From using it as top dressing over winter there is a ton of microryza growing on it which is what I use small amounts in my mix for.
I don't live in Australia but I know not meny ppl know what air layering is nor are they willing to let u do it to there tree. I'm thinking about ninja air layering this year and see if it goes by unnoticed
@@bigspender107 got to do what u got to do. I can't afford the prices of some of the trees here. I've been looking all summer for branches to air layer. U can also start to style the tree while it's still on the parent tree.
Yeh mate could be done for sure or though it still looks such if you go and check it every month and still just as illegal. Even dead wood is illegal 😂😂
Hey Sam, question: what was the species and did it survive? I am wanting to start one and worried that you said that many Australian species don't survive well. Which species you think will give me the best chance?
Hi mate. This was a wattle. It barely shot a crappy shoot out the bottom. I dug another wattle and it has shot fine?? Also bottle brush easy and gum trees seem ok. Still trying to figure it out myself. Melaleuca mostly seems hard
Choice: Do I leave it and let introduced animals eat it to death OR do I liberate it and bring it home to thrive? Pretty bloody easy choice if you ask me. Glad you made the right choice mate ;-)
I was lookn like a skecthy guy last weekend at the riverside poachin me a couple of oak for bonsai. Woulda looked like I was lookin for magic mushrooms or cigarette butts. Few people saw me n turned around. Ended up gettn in there, rippin then marched back home double time. Lol!
Classic! Is Leo a Kelpie Healer cross? Looks a lot like a beautiful girl I had many years ago, best friend I ever had. They call em Man's best friend for a reason. Totally with you on the training. Just bend em don't break em. Cheers mate.
Hi mate, this one is a kelpie crossed with a New Zealand huntaway. Such a cool dog. I think the huntaway is what gives it the floppy ears, bigger paws and also a loud as bark. The family has taken to him so well and he to us. Great family Dog 😁
Been on many a night mish, myself! I sometimes wonder if I run into someone with my spade and a reciprocating saw, in the dead of night, that it might appear I’m burying a body
Our U.S. safety mantra: Call 811 from anywhere in the country a few days prior to digging, and your call will be routed to your local one call center. Tell the operator where you're planning to dig. Your affected local utility companies will be notified about your intent to dig and will send locators to your dig site to mark the approximate location of buried lines with flags or paint. Remember: Always call 811 before you start any digging project! You can help avoid injury, expense, embarrassment and a very inconvenient day without critical services like electricity, internet or phone.
I ended up getting 2 different natives growing in my garden from wood chips I got from council trimming roads side trees , the seed must have been in with the wood chips when they got mulched , I put the wood chip on the garden as a mulch and they came up , 2 free trees I’ll be planting into pots this year . 👍
I think it needs to be fairly coarse but yeh it's a cheaper option compared to perlite and peat moss which also is really good. Trick is to keep it moist but have lots of aeration in the soil so the roots dont rot before they have a chance to grow 😁
Mate, that's gold. Ya got nothing to worry abt I reckon, when the bastard politicians are airial spraying endangered grasslands or ripping up thousands of tress for these filthy mines,, I like your work & hope that tree survives 👍👍
@@SamDoeckeAussiebonsaibloke Keep us updated on that. Have you ever considered using rooting hormones, even when they are still in the field to generate more hair roots on the top?
Holy cow. I can accept you nicking the odd bonsai. But for an Aussie Bonsai Bloke I at least expected you to be driving a Holden or Ford. Not a Hyundai. What’s happening over there. Crickey mate.
Pretty sure you would get locked up for more time digging trees or catching fish out of season then you would for killing somebody in the northwest of the USA in Oregon.
