One of the most enlightening things I learned from your videos is to let the tree dictate it’s design, rather than try to make it into your idea of what you want it to look like. That was a game changer for me.

I started my bonsai adventure by working on a farm pruning blueberry bushes. The manager spoke a little English and I speak a little Spanish. He always said, "If a branch bothers you, cut it." Seems this transfers to bonsai nicely.

Thankyou Peter its v encouraging to see whats possible with not overly expensive starter trees. I bought a juniper procumbens about 5 yrs ago to make into bonsai , all the foliage was intimidating but i threw caution to the wind and removed over half the roots and more in foliage , and it has really turned into a quite a nice bonsai even with my v amateurish bonsai attempts.

absolutely phenomenal, thanks so much for being so considerate in the execution of this video ensuring us to see exactly what is going on. I took up bonsai work from accidentally stumbling across your videos only two weeks ago when i visited my local bunnings (Australian outdoors shop) all they had left was juniper procumbens and I didn't purchase one as their thick foliage was intimidating for a beginner and I also didn't think they were the "traditional" juniper species to use for bonsai, but not only have you shown me I certainly can use juniper procumbens but exactly how to do it. thanks for the effort you put into this video and your channel. you're the bob ross of bonsai my friend

Besides the content, somehow I really like the almost amateur cinematography of these videos. On one hand, he's really cute when he's checking if the camera can see the tree from the right angle, when there are so techniques to do it better... :) On the other hand, I always feel like I'm right there with him, like he's talking straight to me. These videos are so honest and simple, you can't help but love them.

@@peterchan3100 Hello! I just discovered your videos tonight---after hearing on the Bonsai FB website that I am a member of, that all bonsai videos on RU-vid are garbage. I have learned more from your videos, after just one evening of viewing, than I have learned from ANY advice on that website. I am a complete NEWBIE. I have purchased some small spruce, dwarf Japanese maple, and boxwood from a local nursery, plus I have probably 30 red maple sprouts in my vegetable garden, and to my delight, 5 Norway spruce have sprouted in my old garden, all thanks to my neighbor's generous trees. I have also sprouted 10 pin oaks from acorns that I collected from the ground at work, in the refrigerator over the winter. I look forward to your video advice along the way. ( A beautiful, already styled Juniper bonsai arrived on my porch today--just so I'd have ONE tree that was already well on it's way, to inspire me). Your videos will do the same! Thank you so much!!

I just styled this kind of Juniper and without any wiring it looks beautiful. It had a “Y” trunk and I cut the smaller part of the Y trunk and made a Jin. The larger part of the Y trunk had a wonder kind of jagged bend in it, as though it had been wired into that position, and it leans dramatically, again as though it was wired to do so. It’s one of my best bonsai to date. And I followed your directions and it looks so nice. Thank you for what you do.

I’m so glad you did a demonstration on this tree. I used to really dislike this tree because it is what I would see around as commercially produced bonsai and that was a turn off for me but recently I’ve fallen in love with them because you can do so much with it, many styles, and really experiment and get experience and it’s a really low cost investment if you accidentally overwork it and kill it. 🤪

Very well done. I have 2 Procumbens junipers, I've been "experimenting" with for over a decade. ( one is 15 years in my possession, it was about 5 when I got it out of the trash from a home center ) Just this year, for the first time, I have tried to wire the oldest one, up to form a leader, and the other branches out to form pads. I don't know if it will work, but I did realize that I have literally ruined any chance of good pads to grow on the branches. I may have to just let this one go. Biggest part of what you do is learning what to see in the tree. That has always been my biggest fault in all my trees that I have.
