He was a fantastic teacher. Very detailed and thorough. I am new to this and I have just learned he has transitioned. May his soul rest in peace. My condolences to the family.
Well explained 😊 my first time to see how bonsai plants are made. I just felt a little pain seeing the plant going with that process but i know its just temporary
R.I.P You will truly be missed.. May a strong and proud tree always grow wherever your feet touched the ground. Your Bonsai brother sincerely /Johan from Bonsai Talk R.I.P Ikaw ay tunay na napalampas .. May isang malakas at mapagmataas na puno laging lumago kahit saan ang iyong mga paa baliw sa lupa. Will miss his videos was the first video I watched on bonsai. He will be remembered thru his work he shared on RU-vid. He always took time to answer questions. Wj
Thank you for sharing your amazing insight into your impressive knowledge! You are an inspiration to me and so many others that are just starting out in the world of bonsai!❤️
Thank you for posting this! And for being gracious in your replies to others. Not only did the video bring me a lot of insight, but the comments -like the person explaining how someone's "Bad!" can really mean "good"- were all good. It is so good to remember we have the ability to ( just like the bonsai'd trees, which are under stress and being twisted with wires) turn any "bad" thing into its opposite, if we can just change our perspective.
I'm about to ask for the update of this lemon tree but just figured out that he's gone. I'm just a beginner and I will use all of his videos as my reference. Thank you for the tips teacher.
As I scroll up comments and reading them, it's a shock to read one of the comment saying you past away.😔 Rest in peace kabayan. Sad to found your video and it's what I read from the comment below. Thank you for sharing your knowledge to many. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Thank you for sharing your ideas, video, I have just found this video, and to learn in the comments below, you have passed away, that's so sad, my deepest condolences to the family. RIP. God bless his family 🙏🙏
subbed! this was from 2015 wondring if you have the video of the development of this lime tree..you're very passionate ..thanks for sharing.I guess I wont be able to that "bonsaing job'..you need passion and green thumb .
You did a great job Sir! I liked that outcome. Hopefully, I could have my own bonsai too soon. That's part of my future plans and it's what actually drove me into your video :))
You are artist and thank you for posting such amazing tutorials. I have lot of Jamun seeds and would like to try bonsai this tree. Hopefully I do justice to the plants
I am very new to bonsai and I have a question. Though you will not be able to answer my question, I thank you for all the knowledge that you have shared through your videos. Rest In Peace sir. If anyone can help me out with this please answer. I have a nursery stock of an apple tree. But the height is almost 5 feet and it has no branches just the long stem. How do I start with it? Looking forward. Thank you.
I think we wrap a wire around the bark not only to give a require shape but also restricts its growth vertically so that the bark and the stems become thicker ..... NOW Question comes that.... how long we should keep it as wired ....when to released the wires.....is the pruning necessary when wired?..........which month is preferred for this (in Asia/ India)??
Wrapping metal wire around any plant does not benefit it in any way in fact the opposite what do you thinks gonna happen when the stem becomes thicker and it strangles itself to death and cuts off it's own water supply this doesnt even make the stem grow slower either
u are very good teacher Sir.! really usefull tutorial .. I do have..bouganvilla..lemon & mango..trees in my gardens..and also have unknown trees that i'll already do the Bonsai. .but..without proper knowledge & technic..and limited time..it's grows like non arts of Bonsai.. hope can learn & do proper technics from u.!
When planting a tree to grow the trunk using the co-lander method, how is it pruned to maintain height? Would it be pruned as normal bonsai as described in your other videos, or would it be allowed to wild growth to develop faster and then cut back? Thank you for your time
you know Iligan... it would be nice if you could create a separate channel just so we can fallow what you do with one tree from either seed or nursery to bonsai! :^) or even a playlist of all the videos of this tree.
We actually have those playlists. We started a playlist on his favorite plants. He just wasn't able to put updates because he became too weak with all the chemotherapy and other cancer medications. If I visit the Philippines, I will try to film updates of those bonsais. - Maki
Thanks for the video. A question about wiring on lemon trees - do you have any time estimations on how long wiring should be left on before it starts to cut into the bark?
Thanks for watching, sorry I can not update this lemon as if was sold to a persistent buyer. I have other videos which I have updates though. Hope you will like them.
Hello Sir~~~I did learn something~~~I potted a lime tree using a colander as you advised( in order to produce smaller roots/root ramification ~~I allowed the tree to rest in the shade as I did branch selection and pruned off large leaves ~~~it has been about 2 months and now I have smaller leaves and now (here in Florida USA) at this time it is flowering....it had 2 small lime fruit when I started and removed them........the juice was perfect so after hot labor I had limeade~~~My question since it has been 2 months since the repotting process~~~ do you think I should fertilize the tree~~~considering that Florida USA is a subtropical climate that is warmer than usual right now and no guarantee we will have cold weather this year since we are in an El Nino Weather pattern~~~can giving it food be too risky given those circumstances???
i do know lemon trees, as all citrus trees, dont need a lot of water, its better to let the soil dry up than to alway keep is moistured... because this is what the trees in their natural climate also used to, i am having a lot of lemon and orange trees that are in their first year, i noticed when they are just sprouts they grow better with less water
Joy Espadilla To get the branches to grow in appealing shapes. Bonsai is about rendering an image of an adult tree in the landscape. Small trees will not often grow in ways that look 'natural' naturally, and will need convincing to convincingly present a 'realistic' image. Another technique, good for brittle trees, is clip-and-grow.
+dev bachu To keep them small, you need to make their trunks crooked to reduce height, that is if their trunks and pliable enough by wiring. good luck to your new hobby.
Good video! But I have a question... How big should a lemon be before you can start training? What is the youngest that you can start? I have a few lemon seedlings I want to train as bonsai.
a year or two old. but the thing to watch is how pliable the trunk is still. the older the tree, the more difficult it is to bend it. but if the tree is also too young you might damage the cambium with you wires and even break them even before you can make it into a curvy bonsai.
Sarr Cat hey just saw your comment I too have a few lemon plants, and I have he same question as you. Did you manage to make them into bonsai? I did a trial one it was only around 5 or 6 inches tall and I found some copper wire and I created some curves etc. I am a total novice so I probably done it all wrong, but a it's doing well and still alive :)
@Mr Floralhey thanks for asking, it's still alive and growing! I have taken the wire off as I thought what I was doing is wrong, so it's now a curvy base stem if that makes sense.
Hello my question is for how long do you the training wires ? I bought my lemon this morning and planing to become a bonsai in couple years , so keep updating videos of your lemon and I'll follow you! Cheers JM
Juan Martinez You need to remove your wires when it will start biting your branches. So for how long? the answer is it depends how fast your plant grows. You can allow the branches to bite though a little but if the wires are digging to about 1/4 the size of any of your branches, you can start cutting the wires. Sometimes wire bite marks can make the bonsai look older thus others allow the wires to bite. Overtime when the marks heal, the branches could look rugged rather than smooth and that is a feature for bonsai.
I love it, i wanted to bonsai kalamansi lemon, is it ok to put it indoors even if it is newly potted,, the sun is just in the morning because it is close to the window
if it is newly potted it has to be protected from sun to prevent dehydration, better protect it fully meaning no sun, but once it is established it has to be out into the sun. bonsai just like any plant needs sun and air movement which is outside the house. You can get them into the house near a window once in a while..
hello, thank you bonsai iligan, all of your information is wonderful. would you recommend this step for a 10yr old grafted ficus that has never been a bonsai, its trunk is already very thick. thank you for your time
erieschl I assume that ficus is in the ground. To harvest that ficus you need to do it gradually. step 1. Chopped the tree to your desired height ratio is 1:6, the 1 is your trunk diameter, the 6 is your height. so if its a 5 inches thick you chopped it at 30 inches. also chop a lateral root nearer to the base of trunk and do it one at a time say every 3 months. The response is that the tree would grow new branches which you can wire/shape. the cut roots will grow new roots nearer to your base. Then maybe a in a year or two you can harvest the tree, cut the tap root and transfer in this colander method. check your climate, should be growing period.
I have a suggestion. Consider giving this tree some "Rescue Remedy" which is a Bach Flower Essence, and is good for the kind of stress it has endured. This is something humans and animals do well with, and I assume trees too. You would put a few drops into the water you will water with. . .
thanks ani sir :) mga videos nimo tanan ge pang save nako sa computer.. dako kaayug katabang imo videos sir sama nako na beginner.. hope maka visit ko sa imong garden dha iligan.

Do not over water, will cause fungus. Colder climate will hasten fungus and rot your roots. If it is in shade already no need for plastic covering and just let it air dry. then water when soil gets dry that means twice a day.
is it ok sir if I used only sand from river or will I change it with river stone grits(first layer), river sand(second layer and vermi cast (third layer or at the top)?
Thank you for sharing it. It's a good tutorial and intersting kaayo. The stone that you used brod, is that a normal stones that we found? it's looked like grabas? Tell me pls Thanks!. Gimingaw ko nga nakaheared sa Visayan language panalagsa.
