Thank you for the lessons. This video reminded me about the hormones going to the top sacrificial branch. I have to remove some needles.

To confirm: "node" here refers to the point where one flush of growth ends and the next begins? I mostly do broadleafs so not sure how the terminology maps over.

Those black pines look fantastic, great video again as always. Are those branches from the second tree from backbuds or some other technique? Such a compact design, it has huge potential.

Hi, how often do you water your pines growing in your standard potting mix? Do you let them drs out completely between watering?
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify Месяц назад
Every 2 days or so. But it depends on conditions. Pines in perlite stay wetter longer than pines in akadama mixes in my experience. You want to let them go longer between waterings that other trees. In my mild summer climate the one in the terra cotta pot is every 1-2 days prior to decandling and every 2-3 days afterward until growth gets going again.

Is there any benefit to leave the growth on the tree till fall and then do this work?This is for a 4-5yr old JBP I was wondering if it would speed up thickening of the trunk? Also, will this work for Shohin trees? Or will it develop too fast and lose too much control of the growth?

It's a balancing act on trees in development. You can leave branching depending on how vigorous it is. But this tends to lead to leggy branching. In my first batch starting in 2007, by about 2012 I was decandling sometimes and other times leaving them to grow. The main sacrifice is enough to bulk the trunk - using two sacrifice branches from low on the trunk will do the same a bit faster but cause less vigorous branching.

Thank for this video. Your jumping back and forth between the two trees was somewhat disorienting...
