You explained how the crown will be pruned next summer to control the growth so well. That really makes sense and I hope that you can show us the results in a year from now.
I did not do any wiring, but I had wired this tree a bit in the summer after decandling it. It could be further wired right now, but I think in this case re-wiring after cutback next summer will work better.
That tree is incredible for 15 years from seed in containers. I've nurtured some 10 year old JBPs from seed and they look nothing like that. But 5 years could make all the difference if we have some good summers for once in London. And now I've watched your vids of course. Thanks.
How do you winter your pines? I'm thinking of getting a black pine, and I also live in San Francisco, but everything I consult says it doesn't get cold enough here. Yet you've clearly got it sorted out. Any advice?
These live outdoors in full sun year-round in my San Francisco yard. Black pines do fine, even great here. Some other pines that are native to high elevations do require more cold. But black pines are fine.
Hey how's it going greetings from Chicago! I have a quick question I have an Austrian pine( I believe) but I want to know when would be a good time to do a " severe" trunk chop at the crown?? It's an a 10 gallon pot needs to be repotted also. In height it's about 2 ft or less.
Austrian pine is a different animal. However I think any pine is safe to prune back hard in fall (maybe a bit late in Chicago now but not sure.) And for some pines early - to -mid-summer pruning is also very good.

Yes. Although my "fall" is very late generally. Usually the first two weeks of December. I've been waiting for the elms to start turning, and they're looking like they're thinking about it. And I have a hornbeam and some oaks to work on as well. Not sure what the video will look like tbh, but thanks for asking!
