It must be nice being able to keep your trees on the benches and enjoy them all year long! My chicago weather forces me to hole them up in the garage annoyingly. 50 plus trees! Addicted!

Zelkova are awesome for bonsai and easy to grow from seed. Those starters are looking so twiggy and tree like already.

The little zelkovas are starting to look very nice! They've come a long way since I last saw them

Wait a minute. Aren't you supposed to be wiring Ezo spruce or something?

@@Bonsaify I'm actually not there yet... the final step should've taken just a couple days but it's taking weeks instead

Thanks for the fall.info...if you saw a structural pblm developing for a zelkova would you trim now? What if major cut in setting seconday branching? Take care
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 9 месяцев назад
Major cuts are better in mid-spring, after leaves emerge and harden. That way you get an immediate reaction and no potential problems with winter dieback. (e.g. if you're in a cold area)

I'm in San Jose. I'm noticing this about my Shin Deshojo. Disappointing not having fall colors. I hope by leaving it outside all winter it'll encourage some better color. It's warm here during fall. It's November 22nd, and it's 70 degrees 😆
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 9 месяцев назад
Also - San Jose water is a problem for maples. If your TDS is above 150 you should use RO or mix some RO water with regular water go get the TDS around 50-100. Good luck.

@@Bonsaify yes, our municipal water is horrible. I'll see about getting a system setup.

Hows pruning now vs in fall, like clean up pruning like you're doing on the zelkovas, is there a difference at all?
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 9 месяцев назад
It is fall where I am - if you are in the southern hemisphere offset the timing by 6 months. Light pruning in fall - heavy pruning is better in mid spring when the tree is actively growing.

What is your fungicide? Thank you
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 9 месяцев назад
Well, what I actually sprayed, and what I would recommend you use are two different things. I used Orkestra because that's what I had handy; it's a systemic anti-fungal commonly used in the nursery industry. The common fungicides used in bonsai I covered in this article: (TL;DR - copper is what I would recommend.). www.bonsaify.com/blogs/news-and-more/three-common-fungicides-for-bonsai-and-how-to-use-them

do your chinese elms drop their leaves in San Francisco? I am in the east bay, and mine have not dropped theirs
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 9 месяцев назад
Not until mid December recently. Even in the east bay location they're still holding on. And Catlin elms wont drop at all. But you can remove the leaves now if you want. Last year I showed an elm at the Pacific Bonsai Expo in November, and I defoliated it prior to the show, it leafed out normally this past spring.

This is why I don't keep deciduous trees, they look terrible in winter
