things that I love from my wavecell helmet: 1. superior security 2. protection against sun over my head. 3. good ventilation. 4. my hair does not pop out from the vents holes, otherwise my hair looks like horns out from the helmet lol. 5. the helmet perfect fits over my head, it is very very comfortable!! no movements upside down or left-right, the helmet and my head are one. thanks
I’ve used wavecell for snowboarding for years now and this season it saved my life the impact that these helmets can take with you feeling nothing is crazy I hope you never go through that. Complaints of not being able to scratch your head and put your glasses is dumb safety before everything.
Thanks for the review. Two things I like about mine are it feels more solid than mips. Mips rattles and shakes, wave cell does not. And no more bees will get stuck in my helmet. Yes that has happened. Multiple times.
Good to note that Bontrager did not come up with the buckle. It has been adopted by several companies both in cycling and other sports. After getting used to it I like it. Great review!
The traditional cyclist helmet are been with us to the last 30 years... wavecell is one of the most revolutionary security evolution!! I love my wavecell helmet, I only have one head, one brain, and I'll try to keep it safe always, my brain is my tool to live and work, I am MTB Rider. regards!! :)
I’ve just had my first spin with the spectre. I’m here in Ireland so the extreme heat is not really an issue. Feels very secure and safe on. I agree about the buckle being a bit weird but I’ll get used to it. Good value for money with safety in mind. Good review btw.
Just ordered a wave cell for similar reasons... Promised wife I wouldn't die out there. Yeah, only issue I'm concerned about is the ventilation during hot and humid summers 🚴♀
conceptually, it makes more sense. I mean you can basically render mips useless by rather little pressure, which means an actual, even small impact, will tranfer a lot of energy still. Of course mips doesnt like it because their system is produced for like 2 dollars but cost 20 retail
I tested a wave cell for three days recently on a Trek Travel trip. It was heavier than my mips helmet, ventilation felt about the same. I like the magnet closure and the helmet felt really solid on my head. I'd buy one today if my mips wasn't only a month old. One big concern: I'm bald, in a crash I think that the stiff wave cell material might slice my scalp up pretty bad. I enjoyed your review, thanks.
@@AdamJStoryDC No! The shape is fine. When I looked at one in the hand the wavecell material is rather stiff. I can imagine if there was an oblique impact it may collapse and flatten which is a primary reduction in impact forces but a direct dead blow the wavecell structure may act like a multi planed scraper on your skin. A laboratory is one thing to provide comparative results which is good but cyclists won't follow the same form out on the road or track.
I recently got the Specter WaveCel Helmet. I really wanted to like this helmet, but after several rides I have noticed something very annoying, and potentially unsafe (at least I'd imagine it'd be unsafe). The strap loosens after riding for some time, and when I stop, I find myself having to pull the straps tighter. Then after more riding, again, re-tighten. I'm not mountain biking either, no jarring, just road cycling. So, this, in addition to being annoying, seems like it would impact the effectiveness of the helmet if I did happen to crash. I've never had straps loosen on any other helmet I've owned. I thought the buckle would be an issue, but I'm ok with the buckle, but I'm not ok with the strap loosening. So, I'm returning this helmet and getting a helmet with MIPS and a strap that doesn't loosen.
I noticed that too and found that almost all helmets do that to some extent, but the fabric they used was very smooth and combined with sweat, it loosened. I used some tape to solve it, and eventually got a Specialized MIPS helmet (see other video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DYh8QcgeVNo.html ) and I have noticed less strap "slippage."
Adam J. Story, DC I have not noticed any slipping of any other helmet I’ve had. My other helmets are Giro brand and they have not loosened a bit in the 3 years I’ve had them. I don’t want to “Jimmy-right” a fix for my helmet. I hope it works for you. My newly ordered helmets should be arriving in a week. Hopefully I have better success with them.
I've been using one for around a month and I think the wave cell acts as a bee and wasp net which is a added bonus and I've not noticed any weight penalty over my previous giro synthe so all in all a good lid
I used one of these for one ride and returned because it didn’t fit with a very thin hat as I really need XL which they don’t make. It also felt warm in my test ride, perhaps half the ventilation as of my old Giro.
Comfort and ventilation are both very important features. But the most important feature is how the helmet works when you crash. It would be helpful if they could design a series of international impact tests that simulate what happens when a rider comes off their bike and then rated. This would then sort out the marketing BS. I wear a POC helmet with MIPPS. One reason I chose this brand was that they take all the helmets from the pro riders they sponsor who have crashed and use this in their research when designing their helmets and looking to make them better
Kali does the same, but they do it for ALL their helmets, not just their sponsored pros. This is one of the advantages of a lifetime crash replacement (on the first crash) is they keep and research their returns, and they get a lot of returns because their policy is so generous (haven’t seen a policy like that since Bell in the mid 1990’s or most brands had in the early 90’s). Now most companies offer a discount, but by the time I’ve crashed (if at all) the replacement can be had for less than the discount. (Treks policy is limited to 1 year). They use a tech that is halfway between Wavecel and MIPS. It keeps the opening open, but uses an elastomer that accepts both linear and rotational give, The issue with them is their road line is a little lacking since they are mostly a mountain biking/bmx company.
Nice review...i think i might get the newer version of this tomorrow. The head scratch factor and ventilation does make me think twice, but for being on sale i think the price is right. Generally where i ride anyways it doesnt get too hot. The inability to head scratch...i think i can deal with this, however i am curious about the feed back they got during testing of this helmet.
I've been using a Bontrager Specter for about 2 weeks. So far, I like it. My biggest complaint was not being able to stow my glasses in my helmet vents the same way as before with a non-Wavecel helmet. But I hadn't really experimented with it too much. The hottest ride I've gone on was about 75 degrees, with low humidity. So I'm curious to see who well it will vent. But at the end of the day, the reason I purchased one was because of my extensive concussion history. So I'm hopeful that Bontrager's claims are valid. I also have a POC Octal X with the SPIN pads. I'm not convinced that they are superior to MIPS like POC claims.
Nate Ayers I’ve noticed that once you figure out where to put the glasses, it works. My gut feeling is that when summer hits and it’s 100 degrees, I’ll know more about the ventilation. Not sure if you noticed some riders in Paris-Roubaix had them. Concussions suck
@@AdamJStoryDC oh definitely! My last concussion was from a crash in a crit about 2 years ago. I was going about 26 MPH when there was a big pile-up in front of me. No way to avoid it and I landed on my head hard. I was symptomatic with dizziness, headaches, vertigo, and motion sickness for 17 weeks! I'm not saying that a Wavecel helmet would have prevented it, but it certainly couldn't have made it any worse. I was wearing a Giro Synthe MIPS at the time. Maybe that lessened the severity of the concussion. Who knows? Thanks for the great review!
Nate Ayers IMHO the MIPS is better than the foam, the WaveCel is better than MIPS. In two years they’ll either make it better/lighter/aero or they’ll develop something else. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Hey Nate, glad you're well and sorry about concussion history. For me I've ridden in 85 to 95 degree temps with humidity (Washington, DC) It's not that bad but air doesn't flow as freely as other helmets.
I am looking into the helmet, but around 2:06 I see you go under a road and I think, “that looks like a spot in Camarillo.” And then a LOT of clues start coming together, and that’s clearly where you are. Pretty fun coincidence! Thanks for the review.
Good eye! BTW I have another channel called Cycling in Southern California if you like cycling. Here's the link: ru-vid.com/show-UCVxlY3fBto21-_sZ5hZNNcw
We are in that time of year when the sun goes down at 5pm and time to pull out the bike lights. I went to mount the helmet light on my WaveCel helmet and I can't because Trek has come up with a stupid idea. Now I have to buy another helmet.
My Main Concern Is Heat Dissipation... The Video Is 4 yrs old... How do you like the helmet now? Towards end of your video you mentioned ventilation isnt as good... Im going to get wavecel tomorrow... prevail 3 doesn’t come in XL size... I think WaveCel I Saw Today 9.10.23 had MIPs Sticker. Ill find out tomorrow... Thanks for video
Good information regarding the helmet clasp. I didn't realize it did not buckle side to side. I don't like the way it clasped under the neck in your video. Still deciding on which helmet is right for me. Thanks for the review.
Good review, sadly I chose the xxx wavecell and there is no way on earth you can attach your shades on them. So will just need to keep that in mind, certainly for the xxx model, look for another option to store away your shades. I also felt like on this model reviwed that they held but only just. You would not trust an expensive pair of shades over some proper bumpy roads
How much damage do you think the plastic material the wave cell is made of will do to your head in a crash. Looks a bit like a bunch of tiny wavy knives. Is the plastic really hard?
@@jamesbruce the first feeling is realy Stiff butt as soon as you push a Little bit more it deflect, Crush , roll ass they show on bontrager publicities
James...I thought it would be softer but its hardened plastic. Felt uncomfortable when I initially put on my helmet but it's snug and comfortable during my rides. The only other complaint I have is that it makes my large skull look larger! LOL!
Hello, great video, I like it very much. Question, how do you feel about this helmet now, 2 years later (comfort and ventilation)? If you use it. Thanks I had a crash 10days ago, I am recovering and searching for new and safer helmet? Last one was Specialized Align II
I still use it when it's not too hot and/or I want high visibility. If I'm doing cyclocross or it's super hot, or I just want to wear red to match my kit, I'll use my other one. I think the lawsuit is kind of ridiculous. I have both Wavecel and MIPS. I'm hoping I never have to COMPARE.
I've found that my current EPS helmet & pads need dishwasher treatment twice a year, minimum. Anyone have any information on whether WaveCel is "Top Rack Safe"? Or would it be compromised in some way?
I own one. Feels secure but a bit heavier than I anticipated. Also, sometimes the “Wave Cell” material is felt on my head. Lastly, wish the White color came with Green or Red Wave Cell material. Can you order it that way?
I don't think they took aesthetics into consideration. I think all the wavecell is lime green. It would be cool though to have like a red combined with yellow or you could choose the color of the wavecel. We'll see if it happens next year.
Very nice helmet but is commuter oriented, if you use it on a road specific bike it will look odd and the visor will block your view. I ride a hybrid and I love the Charge helmet.
Great review. I just bought a white Wavecel Specter a few minutes back. I was using a cheap Specialized Align helmet for about a year (it does not have MIPS) and it served me well but wanted to buy something which has more safety. I haven’t tested the helmet by riding and it is still in the box. I am kind of worried about the ventilation aspect. I live in TX and it reached higher 90s in summer and best part of fall. Do you suggest going for a MIPS helmet? I have Bontrager Circuit MIPS on mind as well. Please let me know.
If you want ventilation and lightness, I'd go with the Specialized MIPS Prevail II or Evade. SUPER light, well ventilated, but $250/275. The Wavecel is heavier, not as ventilated and most importantly, you can't get a finger in the vents to scratch (um...not important until you actually have an itch). It's been 90+ degrees where I am now and it would be nice to have more ventilation, but I'm surviving. Those issues won't occur once the temperature goes down. The Wavecel is a deal IMHO because it was $150 for what's advertised as superior protection. If I'm going to need a helmet, I want to have THIS helmet on, but if ventilation and weight are bigger issues...get the Specialized one.
Adam J. Story, DC thanks for the input . I agree the price of Wavecel is amazing for what it offers . I will check out the specialized ones. I am also considering Bontrager Circuit MIPS Road Helmet / Bontrager Velocis MIPS Road Bike Helmet / Giro Synthe MIPS. Familiar with them? If yes then what would you prefer out of those three? Thanks
@@electrology As long as they have MIPS, it's really which one you like the look of better and if it matches your bike. I personally like the yellow neon color of the Wavecel as it stands out like a sore thumb (see my other cycling videos: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vNKbqg8SW20.html ). I like to be seen and thus live.
Adam J. Story, DC by the way, I went for Specialized Prevail II ANGi. It’s $250 but like you said it felt the lightest among a few I tried. Hope I will enjoy :) Thank you for the suggestions
Nice video. BTW, the Prevail looks way better on u than the wave cell. I was thinking of getting the wave cell, but now I would not. Super duper dorky looking.
@@AdamJStoryDC Lol I do it often on my current helmet with the vents so I can reach in with my fingers.... Its gonna bother me that I won't be able to scratch now with the Wavecel helmet if I do get it....
