On Friday, June 14th, I pulled into a warehouse in Euless, Texas and loaded my car with hundreds of pounds of computer equipment. Purchasing in bulk got me a really good price, and I was already going to be in town for VCF, so why not?
Today, we will look at the first few drives I picked up. For the next few weeks, I will upload videos of 2 boxes each until I run out of drives.

Fun watch! Looking forward to the next one. Really nice to see at least the second MR535 working for now, quite curious to see how many of those end up appearing in full if it's anything like these first two boxes.

Thanks! More is coming for sure. It'll be a long time before I run out.

That ST4144R did not seek test properly. Very close. Mine did this for a bit, but I got it going again after putting it on a level table

I see. I will probably not even attempt to repair it.

@@TheDiskMaster Don’t give up on that drive. Mine did that for a bit and I got it back after a few tries. The sled sometimes needed some slight lubrication or a different orientation of the drive after long storage

@@matthewsvideos8235Being voice coil, if it doesn't work, it's going to either sit on the shelf or get parted out.

My ST-4096 had a stuck head latch when I bought it but I power cycled it several times and managed to get it to unlock and it hasn't given me any trouble since. I use it in my 5150 with a WDXT-GEN2 with dynamic translation. It only has three bad sectors. I begin to wonder if those drives were designed by the team they acquired from Atasi?
@TheDiskMaster
@TheDiskMaster 3 месяца назад
No, these drives came before anything with Atasi. Atasi and Priam were working together until the 90s.

Very interesting selection of drives and nice to hear them all power on! I wonder how many of them actually will end up working, I am really curious about that Magnetic Peripherals 94155-86, since I own one myself and my drive works flawlessly. The Mitsubishi MR535's are great to see and the Lapine Titan is a score!

@@cdos9186 I don't plan to do any further testing, diagnostics, or repair for any voice coil drives.
@cdos9186
@cdos9186 2 месяца назад
@@TheDiskMaster Given you got so many, that would probably take too much time anyways. Especially with how many ended up failed probably either with the electronics or just internal faults. If I recall you specifically asked for non-voice coil stuff and they gave you a ton anyways lmao.

@@cdos9186I did indeed ask for stepper drives only, but I can't blame them for not necessarily knowing. Not everyone just inherently knows what drives are steppers and what aren't. I am thinking about selling some of the ST-4000 drives off to other collectors or on ebay to make my money back.

The MiniScribe 8000 series drives often suffer from stiction (especially the ones used in macs and on hardcards) as well as hall effect sensor failure on the motors. They were decent drives when new (according to Redhill) but have failed to stand the test of time unfortunately.
@TheDiskMaster
@TheDiskMaster 3 месяца назад
Interestingly, I have had the exact reverse experience. My 16 or so 8425S drives from mac's have no stiction at all.
@bobjoe2827
@bobjoe2827 3 месяца назад
@@TheDiskMaster I have noted that the MiniScribe 8425/38S drives with the nasty black foam rubber seal are almost always bad, while the drives with the polyurethane seal are often still good.
@TheDiskMaster
@TheDiskMaster 3 месяца назад
@@bobjoe2827Yeah I've seen a few of the ones with the crappy seal already, but not a single one of these 8000 series has even spun up so far.
@bobjoe2827
@bobjoe2827 3 месяца назад
@@TheDiskMaster They probably have failed boards, bad index sensors usually at least try to spin.
@TheDiskMaster
@TheDiskMaster 3 месяца назад
@@bobjoe2827The behaviour you see in this video is how all of them have acted so far.

I wish people from the discord picked the "all drives in one" option cause now we're going to wait a week in between each part, I wanna see the other ones! It would be nice if you tried to free up all the drives that did not spin up, but I guess that would be too much work for now. Hopefully the next boxes go a bit better than those two
@TheDiskMaster
@TheDiskMaster 3 месяца назад
If I did them all in one video it would be several hours long, especially if I tried to fix every drive as it appeared.
@arnlol
@arnlol 3 месяца назад
I probably wouldn’t have minded if the video was multiple hours long but I guess it makes more sense to split them. Hopefully the next ones will have more drives that spin up and work.
@TheDiskMaster
@TheDiskMaster 3 месяца назад
@@arnlolProbably not. Drives don't like to sit around.

Harder to find every day. Some of these will probably come back to life with a bit of work, though.
