It's hard enough to put pre-emergent down on your lawn at the right time of year in the best of scenarios because the weather changes all the time and is hard to predict. When you have a lawn that is partially shaded or full sun in only some places and full shade in others then it gets even trickier.
In this video, I explain my opinion on the matter while offering a few different ways to solve the timing problem.

If you want to see a good estimate for your own exact pre-emergent application date then see this blog post: turfmechanic.c...

In this video, I reference Prodiamine, Pendimethalin, Dithiopyr, Mesotrione, and Corn Gluten Meal. You can see my thoughts on some of the best weed preventers on the market here: turfmechanic.c...

More traditional Corn Gluten Meal dry products complete with full Nitrogen are easy to find online. Here's an option that I almost bought last year but never got around to: www.amazon.com...

I love weed n feed
@TurfMechanic

Lol, you're not alone, those companies make a killing selling that stuff every spring! 😆 it's a good first step to lawn care in mid spring and early fall for northerners and early summer for southerners but it is wasteful which is why a lot of people like myself don't like it. I see it's value though so I can't knock it across the board.
@treed3476
@treed3476 Год назад
I use the weed and feed differently. I get a cup of it and go around my yard and I'll just sprinkle a little bit on the weeds. Then the next day the weeds are turning brown and dying off. Just my thought.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
@@treed3476 hey now that's a pretty cool idea, kind of like spot spraying weeds but with dry granular instead. I could see that being easy and helpful for lawns with really low weed pressure. 👊

Should I add preemergent if I overseeded in the fall
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
If you had a lot of weed pressure last year then I would probably do it but if you didn't have much then I'd skip it probably and push it to thicken up as much as possible to crowd out weeds that breakthrough.

B you are lucky your soil temps are nice and high! We are stuck at 40° soil temps here still 😩😩😩 always leaning from you now I’m gonna go buy 2 thermometers 😂😂😂😊🙏🏾🤙🏾🔥🔥🔥

man, this has been a crazy winter! Even neighbors down here say it's been way cooler than in years past and obviously way wetter. I can see snow from my neighborhood streets in the hills to our North that are almost never capped with snow. I hate how much water is getting lost due to poor capturing but at the same time there is crazy load of water just sitting on those mountains ready to melt down this Spring which is a good thing. Definitely get a thermometer or two; I'd suggest opting for something better than the ones I used in this video (the stem always breaks off the body from my experience) or an analog version like the kinds ReoTemp makes. I want to find a really high quality digital option to rely on for a while so I'm open to suggestions.

@@TurfMechanic Yeah so weird the forcast seriously says 10 days of frozen lows 🤦🏾‍♂ I'll check out the ReoTemp and do some research on digital ones! Please let me know if you find a good digital version too brotha! 😊🤙🏾🙏🏾

When you use tenacity do you mix other sufactant with it
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
If you apply to post emergent weeds then that helps but if you are applying as a PE then you don't as it works in the soil as opposed to on the plant tissues.

@@TurfMechanic thank you i understand it now. I have new grass coming up from seed i put down last fall and i dont want to apply barricade as pre emergent to the new grass which is in spots all over yard.

Hey Brian, had an idea for a short or a full vid possibly. I have over 7% organic matter in my soil. I'd love a video explaining how the level of OM in soil (low or high) effects what we should plan to do in the lawn each season. Could be a short, or a deep dive.

As always, interesting food for thought! Thanks to your tutelage, I just had my front lawn aerated. Here for the past year and change I thought my new front lawn was 1000 sqft. It turns out to be 2k sqft. What do I know. I put down 2lbs of 10-10-10 fert, half a bag of Milo and 12cu.ft. of leaf compost, on top of my newly aerated lawn. I'm hopeful it will make a huge impact through the summer. When we first moved in this lawn was trash. Thanks B for ALL that you do.💯 BTW, I know it's not close by but me and the family are taking a trip to NAPA in late April. If you're going to be in that area around that time let me know. Take care and God Bless.

Too many! 😆 My favorite is still my long stemmed analog compost thermometer but it bent in our move and I haven't replaced it yet.

Great information! Does pre emergent prevent established KBG from spreading?

No it shouldn't hinder that process.

does corn gluten meal have root pruning properties like (seemingly) all the chemical pre-emergents? i'm experimenting with no pre-em this season. We'll see how it goes, but growing tall fescue down south isn't for the faint of heart... I need every last bit of root health I can muster. Or here's to hoping it works anyway🤞

Hi Brian, I’m ready to put down my barricade, but I want to aerate too. Is it OK if the barricade goes in the holes after I aerate?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
Yeah, I wouldn't worry about that. If you topdress with anything put that down first then apply the barricade so some of the dressing fills holes up a bit first but if you're not top-dressing I still wouldn't worry about it.

What's wrong with throwing down nitrogen early in the season?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
It's not terrible but for most people it ends up being a waste (leeching or volitization) or it pushes unnecessary top growth that many yard owners don't keep up with during the expected spring flush. If natural products are put down early season then they aren't a problem but they are also not used quickly either due to sluggish microbial activity in the soil. For people with extremally thin lawns extra synthetic fertilizer and very frequent mowing can thicken a lawn up quickly but for mot people waiting until at least mid-April if not late April is just fine.

I'm not a fan of pre-emergents. I just target what I need to with selective herbicides early in the spring. I appreciated John's video he put out yesterday on the Lawncology channel. Too many people just throw them down because "It's what you do".
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
I watched his video too and I agree with the vast majority of his thoughts. For most people that take great care of their lawns PE is not necessary because good cultural practices and occasional hand weeding really go further than most people realize. However for people new to lawn care or for people moving into a new lawn then it becomes more important in the first season during lawn repair. For me, I didn't apply anything to my lawn last year and will most likely only be doing a couple apps of CGM this Spring because I intend on mowing nearly daily, using iron for weed suppression, and then seeding later in the year. From a creators standpoint though I need to have a published opinion on this stuff because lots of people look for information like this online regardless of them being fans of Lawn-Tubers; I would rather my opinions be exposed to casual lawn owners than others out there that say that herbicides are the only way to go this time of year.
